5. History
The name of the town of Burgas comes from the
Byzantium PIRGOS. In Latin it is mentioned as
BURGOS – The Towre . Bourgas is marked on maps
for the first time in 1733.
It is an important trading center in the XIX century
with modern architecture.

14. St. Anastasia Island
St. Anastasia Island is a
Bulgarian islet in the
Black Sea. It is located 1.5
km off the coast, at 12
metres above sea level,
and covers a territory of
one hectare. It is the only
inhabited island off the
Bulgarian Black Sea
Coast.

largest Bulgarian island
in the Black Sea, with an

16. Burgas is the biggest town on the southen coast of
Bulgaria . It is surrounded by the see
and three lakes.
17. Burgas has a humid subtropical climate, with some
continental influences. The summertime in Burgas lasts
about five months from mid-May until late September.
Average temperatures during high season is 24 °C.
Summertime sea temperatures stay around 23 °C-24 °C at
sunrise and go up to 29 °C-30 °C at dawn, averaging 26 °C.
18. Winters are milder compared with the inland part of the
country, with average temperatures of 4 °C-5 °C and
below 0 °C during the night. Snow is possible in
December, January, February and rarely in March. The
highest temperature was recorded in August 2003, at
42.8 °C and the lowest at -17.8 °C in January, 1952.
