( Wikipedia)
THE MEANING OF “ SUBALTERN ”
•According to Dictionary,
“ A Subaltern is someone with a
law ranking in a Social, Political or other
hierarchy. It can also mean someone who has
been marginalized or oppressed. ”
• Subaltern means the one who has had no voice
because of race, class or Gender.
• This theory is based on deconstruction as
Derrida has proposed it. It emphasizes that
FOUR “ VARNA” SYSTEM IN INDIAN
SOCIETY
• There is belief that Brahmins are
Priests, Scholars and teachers.
• Kshatriyas are rulers, Warrior and
administrator.
• Vaishyas are agriculturalists, and
Merchants.
• Shudras are labourers and Service
providers.
• So, there is belief in society that
Shudras are only to do works of
higher caste’s people.
THEORY OF SUBALTERN IN “ PURPOSE ” BY
KAILASAM
• Eklavya is the Centre character of the
play “ Purpose ” by T. P Kailasam.
• Eklavya is a nishaad boy, who lives in
jungle in tribal areas.
• Kailasam put Eklavya as a hero because
in Purpose he is totally different than
Mahabharata. His aim is totally different.
• He wants to learn archery from Guru
Dronacharya because he wants to save
many Fawns from wolves in that region of
the forest. Wolves continuously hunt down
and eat fawns.
• Drona’s other pupil, Arjuna, he gets into
a small fight with Eklavya and insults his
caste, telling him that he is low and hence,
is unable to ever compete with somebody
Eklavy
a
Well, then,if you really do know what there is to
be proud of in being an ARYA that there is not in
being a nishaada...tell me ! ... I am a nishaada
and you are an Arya. Tell me how you are any
better than I for being an Arya ?
Arjuna
AN ARYA is AN ARYA ! And a
NISHAADA is only a LOW BORN
NISHAADA !
• After listening the noble arguments of Eklavya Drona is
thoroughly impressed with this volley of ideas and is even
more willing to take on Eklavya than before.
• Drona had promised Arjuna that he would make him the
greatest archer in the world.
• Eklavya states that he should have an equal opportunity.
• Eklavya genuinely believes that the Guru will side with him.
But unfortunately after invoking his promise, the honour
bound Guru has no choice but to turn Eklavya away. Eklavya
is heartbroken.
• Six year later with Drona and Arjuna wandering through the
forest and talking. Suddenly they see a Wolf out from a
• Arjuna gets pissed as, after witnessing Eklavya’s mad archery. At
that time Arjuna calls Drona a liar and Eklavya gets angry.
• Eklavya reveals that his Guru is the great Drona. Drona denies this
vehemently, saying that he had not trained anyone other than
Arjuna. Eklavya says that he has learnt from this statue. Drona is
now feel confused and guilty.
☆ Conclusion :-
After Studying this play we can conclude that
the main Purpose of T. P Kailasam is to draw the attention
on the main issue of our society that is Subaltern. The
upper caste people, who ruling over the lower caste
people and they have no place for raises their voices in
society. I would like to put here one word that is “
Humanity. ” Give importance to this word rather than any
religion, caste or class.
