This session will provide an overview of what climate change means for agriculture in Eastern Ontario. What does current scientific understanding predict for this region when it comes to growing conditions in the coming years? Concepts of adaptation and mitigation will be discussed, providing producers with practical suggestions to meet challenges and access opportunities that might arise from climate change. Current research and policy initiatives, designed to contribute to the resilience of the agriculture sector, will be introduced.

Land use is central to many of the environmental and socio-economic issues facing society today. Understanding how to feed global populations, while tackling the twin challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change is, therefore, a key question for policy makers. How can governments align national strategies to achieve sustainable land use? What institutional arrangements foster coherent policy making in the nexus of land use, climate, biodiversity and food? What policy instruments can be used to create sustainable land use systems? On 18 February, Will Symes and Katia Karousakis of the OECD Environment Directorate discussed how to align policy making for sustainable land use. The talk highlighted findings from the OECD report "Towards Sustainable Land Use: Aligning Biodiversity, Climate and Food Policies", published on the same day.

- Uganda and Zambia are carrying out activities to better assess adaptation options through cost-benefit analysis and impact evaluation exercises, as part of the Integrating Agriculture in National Adaptation Plans (NAP-Ag) Programme led by FAO and UNDP. Both Uganda and Zambia are also paving way for gender mainstreaming into National Adaptation Plans, with recent cross-sectoral workshops held in May and June to discuss these topics and pave the way for integrated strategies.

Participatory climate risk and livelihoods mapping provides specific information that is required to deliver more salient climate services (CS) for farmers within the context of farm decision- making. • Each major cropping and livelihood system has different CS requirements in terms of their temporal and spatial scale. • The identification of relevant actors to tailor CS and building partnerships at the local level is crucial to better define mandate, roles, and types of support that each actor can provide. • It is important to consider the anticipated future changes in peoples’ livelihoods and zones since these have important implications for designing CS-related programs and integrating the CS agenda into the national or provincial climate change adaptation planning.

The seminar on Problem Formulation for the Risk Assessment of Biopesticides stemmed from a previous CRP-sponsored event on Innovating Microbial Pesticide Testing that identified the need for an overarching guidance document to determine when in vivo tests are necessary. Problem Formulation, a common practice in pesticide risk assessment, was highlighted as a useful approach for addressing uncertainties in data requirements for biopesticides. The seminar featured presentations from various perspectives, including industry, regulatory bodies, and academia. Topics included the history and principles of Problem Formulation, industry perspectives on Problem Formulation and how it is applied internally for microbial pesticides, regulatory approaches, and specific case studies. The seminar provided an overview of the challenges, considerations, and potential solutions in harmonising Problem Formulation for biopesticide risk assessment. It emphasised the need for collaboration and discussion to develop Problem Formulation guidance for biopesticides.
