On March 11, 2015, Gary Sebach, OHM Advisors' Director of Architectural Services and Marysville ECHS Principal Kathy McKinnis, presented a landmark STEM education project at the Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA) conference: “STEM in Motion” Ohio’s first grant-funded STEM Early College High School.
3. STEM facts:
-Not enough students are graduating with STEM backgrounds to fill the open positions in
the marketplace.
-If current trends continue, more than 90 percent of all scientists and engineers in the world
will be living in Asia.
-More than 50 percent of all engineering doctoral degrees awarded by United States
engineering colleges are to foreign nationals.
-During the next decade, the United States demand for scientists and engineers is
expected to increase at four times the rate for all other occupations.
-The United States ranks 20th among all nations in the proportion of 24-year-olds who earn
degrees in natural science or engineering.
-The United States ranked 28th in math literacy and 24th in science literacy, according to a
2008 report by the Congressional Research Service.
-More than half of teens (55%) would be more interested in STEM simply by having
teachers who enjoy the subjects they teach
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become
increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization
and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and
highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to
levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”

4. Demand for STEM workers is
projected to Increase
New Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that employment in
STEM occupations is expected to expand by 17% from 2010 to
2020.
It is estimated
that 80% of all
jobs in the
next decade
will require a
strong
foundation in
STEM
10. MECHS
Marysville STEM Early College High School is a school of choice for
Marysville High School Students. Opening in August, 2014, it is funded
through Ohio’s Straight A Fund Grant with the intention of providing
students with a STEM focused, inquiry based curriculum based on real
world experiences.
11. EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Early College High Schools blend high school and college in a rigorous yet
supportive program, compressing the time it takes to complete a high
school diploma and the first two years of college. Students completing
early college high schools can earn a high school diploma and up to
two years of college as well.
13. DESIGN THINKING
Our goal is to create a vibrant, challenging learning community for students
to become career and college ready through an inquiry based, student
centered curriculum.
18. MECHS PARTNERSHIPS
Central to MECHS is our development of two way community partnerships.
Our partners have been highly involved in concept development, career
pathway development, curriculum design, architectural design,
