 Education inspection framework handbook paragraphs 96, 112,
113 and 118.

How we inspect curriculum:
the deep dive.

A reminder
The curriculum is at the heart of the EIF
 ‘The curriculum is a framework for setting out the aims of a
programme of education, including the knowledge and
understanding to be gained at each stage (intent);
 for translating that framework over time into a structure and
narrative, within an institutional context (implementation),
and
 for evaluating what knowledge and skills learners have
gained against expectations (impact/achievement).’

 Joint work scrutiny with a teacher, manager or assessor.
 Case study of learners who have high needs.
 Visits to learning and work environments.
 Discussion with a manager on outcomes / destination data.
 Review of accommodation, resources or workplace.
 Discussion with an apprentice / employer / manager.
 Series of linked activities to triangulate the evidence.
HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 12
Summary
Inspection will concentrate through focused
curriculum reviews of areas of provision that are
significant and substantial.
These can be subjects, types of provision,
subcontractors, variations in regional performance.
Carried out jointly whenever possible.
Lead inspector will choose – you need to be aware
of other areas that might be chosen.
Garner feedback as you go.
HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 13
Subsequent deep dives
 The lead inspector will have planned some initial deep dives.
 These are unlikely to be the only ones completed during an
inspection.
 Further deep dives will almost certainly be organised as the
inspection progresses.
 Agreed in team meetings – have your say and suggest subjects
or areas.
 ‘Typicality’.
HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 14
Subcontracted provision
 Might be part of:
 a subject deep dive involving the prime contractor
 a local area deep dive covering a subject or a level
 All or part of any subcontracted provision may be subject to a
deep dive in its own right.
 Learners in subcontracted provision are yours – you are wholly
responsible for them.

  • 5. A reminder The curriculum is at the heart of the EIF  ‘The curriculum is a framework for setting out the aims of a programme of education, including the knowledge and understanding to be gained at each stage (intent);  for translating that framework over time into a structure and narrative, within an institutional context (implementation), and  for evaluating what knowledge and skills learners have gained against expectations (impact/achievement).’ HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 5

  • 11. Activities in a deep dive (1)  Discussion with an individual learner or apprentice.  Discussion with an individual teacher, trainer or assessor.  Discussion with an individual curriculum lead, head of department or workplace supervisor.  Discussion with the vice principal curriculum, principal, head of service or director.  Discussion with a group of learners / apprentices (by deep-dive area).  Joint scrutiny with a teacher / assessor of learner’s progress from starting point. HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 11
  • 12. Activities in a deep dive (2)  Discussion with a group of teachers or assessors.
  • 13. Summary Inspection will concentrate through focused curriculum reviews of areas of provision that are significant and substantial. These can be subjects, types of provision, subcontractors, variations in regional performance. Carried out jointly whenever possible. Lead inspector will choose – you need to be aware of other areas that might be chosen. Garner feedback as you go. HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 13
  • 14. Subsequent deep dives  The lead inspector will have planned some initial deep dives.  These are unlikely to be the only ones completed during an inspection.  Further deep dives will almost certainly be organised as the inspection progresses.  Agreed in team meetings – have your say and suggest subjects or areas.  ‘Typicality’. HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 14
  • 15. Subcontracted provision  Might be part of:  a subject deep dive involving the prime contractor  a local area deep dive covering a subject or a level  All or part of any subcontracted provision may be subject to a deep dive in its own right.  Learners in subcontracted provision are yours – you are wholly responsible for them. HOLEX CPD Webinar - Deep Dives - 23 June 2021 Slide 15

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Presenter notes: 2 minute (22) Introduce the method –deep dive into particular areas of curriculum – talk about how we will usually agree on the areas to explore during the planning call with the nominee; then select further areas as the inspection progresses. Validity and depth are key, rather than breadth
  2. Trainer notes: 3 minutes (30) It’s worth emphasising that in the EIF there are no separate judgements of intent, implementation and impact. This is because the quality of education depends on a ‘golden thread’ running through all three, and all three are necessary to the QoE judgement. This becomes clear if we consider for a moment that a provider could have very convincing curriculum intent – they may have chosen content very well, based, for instance, on a close analysis of local labour market needs, informed by a consideration of the fundamental principles a learner needs to know and understand, sequenced in such a way to develop and embed knowledge over time. However, it may be that the provider has not employed teachers with enough curriculum knowledge to teach the curriculum well – they may use inappropriate, ineffective activities; they may not be able to explain key concepts well; they may rush through difficult sections and focus on easy activities. You can see in this example that the quality of education would probably be poor, even though the curriculum intent was strong. This is why we don’t judge the three sections separately – they are all part of one narrative, and all three are needed before we can make a judgement about the effectiveness of education / quality of education at a provider. An example of this is in your notebook on page 11 and 12. Take a few minutes to read this and take discussion.
