Acid Mine Drainage
Control and Treatment
THINKING BEYOND THE OBVIOUS
2. Akin to Ozone depletion and Global Warming, Acid Mine Drainage is a mammoth dilemma.
South Africa is being faced with a water security quandary and AMD is currently one of the main pollutants
of surface water. Due to the fact that mining being the corner stone of the South African economy the
issue of AMD has to be managed effectively and with haste before this colossal crisis causes extreme
ecological degradation.
Sulphur-bearing minerals exposed to the elements forms this metal rich water which contains toxic
substances like arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury and in certain instances it may even contain radioactive
particles from uranium. AMD not only contaminates drinking water which is detrimental to humans but
hinders the growth of aquatic plants and animals. It also has a corroding effect on infrastructure. A strategic
approach needs to be implemented in order to successfully mitigate the damaging impacts of AMD.
Attend this vital conference and gain insight into the causes, treatment, control and prevention of AMD.
