The aim of this workshop is to connect teachers from various countries to extend their understanding of media literacy
and critical thinking with a focus on global skills, and to provide them with practical ideas they can incorporate in their
regular English classes. By the end of the session the participants will be able to:
- increase their knowledge about media literacy (what it is, how important it is, what the dangers are if we ignore it, what
impact it has on our lives);
- learn new methods so that they can raise awareness among their students and the communities they live in on this
topic;
- learn what they can do practically in their classes so that their students can become more active citizens in the global
world with a focus on media literacy, critical thinking and global skills;
- find ideas and partners to set up collaborative projects with school communities in order to promote global awareness
related to one of the threats of the century and the world we live in;
- connect and share with other educators;
- find out resources they can access and use while setting up activities dealing with media literacy, and global skills.

Nowadays, the challenge that we, teachers of a foreign language, have to face is not only to develop the basic
linguistic skills in our students, but also to support their autonomy in acquiring them. Whether we focus or
receptive or productive skills, we need to make learners aware of various techniques they can use while reading,
learning vocabulary or using the language as a tool for communicating effectively (both face-to-face and online!)
and helping them to do it from a very young age is essential in the 21st century.
Session Title - Reading Plus!
In this session I will focus on receptive skills and discuss a number of reading and listening activities that can be
conducted in a way that is fun, engaging and most importantly allow the youngest students to choose their own
strategy to understand the text, both written and spoken. The outcome of doing such tasks in both online and
classroom context is a confident, creative and autonomous learner that approaches further tasks with confidence
and enthusiasm. Throughout the webinar, the participants will have a chance to gain some hands-on experience
of doing the tasks in the online environment, with some help of the tools that come with Give Me 5 courses -
digital books and Navio software.
