India At The Olympics

This Olympian studied at Saint Xaviers College, Calcutta and is credited
with the first hat-trick in an open football tournament in India, for Saint
Xavier's against Sovabazar in July 1897. He won the 100 yards sprint
title for seven consecutive years from 1894 to 1900 in Bengal province
and set a meet record in 1898–99. He also won the 440 yards (¼ mile) run
and the 120 yards hurdles. He served as Secretary of the Indian Football
Association from 1900 to 1902. He moved permanently to Britain in
1905. He then moved to the United States to pursue a career in acting
and became the first Olympian to act in silent Hollywood movies.

•He was the first Indian athlete to participate in the Olympic
Games and was also the first to win an Olympic medal and also
represent an Asian nation.
•He won two silver medals at the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris,
coming second in the 200 metres behind Walter Tewksbury of the
United States and second in the 200 metres hurdles behind the
legendary Alvin Kraenzlein.

When cricket legend Sir Don Bradman met ‘X’ at
Adelaide in 1935, he remarked, “He scores goals like runs
in cricket.” In 1972, the International Olympic Committee
is reported to have sent this Indian Olympian a special
invitation to witness the Munich Olympics. Government of
India issued a commemorative postal stamp in his memory
on December 3, 1980. He has an award named after him.

This Indian Olympian participated in the Quit India
Movement providing shelter and a hiding place to the
revolutionaries; circulating letters against the British
were some of his contributions to the movement. He
resolved to unfurl the tricolour flag in Olympics on
Independence Day August 15, 1947. He is the only Indian
Olympic medalist who never received a Padma Award.

This legendary Indian sportstar won more than 150 medals in his 22-year
career. He is the recipient of the Padma Bhushan and is one of the top
influencers of sport policy in the country. He served as a goodwill
ambassador for the Rio 2016 Olympics Indian contingent. In 2018, he was
bestowed with the prestigious Blue Cross, the ISSF's highest honour. He is
also currently a member of the IOC Athletes' Commission. He is regarded by
many as one of the best Asian in his category and one of the greatest Indian
sportstar of all time. He is the CEO of an organization named after him that
works to bring science and technology into the sport and healthcare sectors.

Even before her Olympic win, ‘X’ was a two-time world
champion with 29 international medals, which includes
11 gold medals. She is the first Indian woman to win a
medal at the Olympics. She was awarded with the Rajiv
Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.

* In 2000 Sydney Olympics, she won bronze medal at
the Women's 69 kg weightlifting category, it was the
first ever Olympic medal won by an Indian women.

‘X’ is legendary Indian sportstar who hails from Najafgarh, the same place
cricketer Virender “Nawab of Najafgarh” Sehwag is a native of. His cousin Sandeep
gave up his dream of becoming a professional sportsperson so that ‘X’ could pursue
his dreams. ‘X’ trained at the famed Chhatrasal Stadium under Dronacharya
awardee Mahabali Satpal. ‘X’ married his guru’s (coach) daughter Savi. His
PETA’s campaign reads, “Look at me, I defeated non-vegetarians from Kazakhstan
and America in the Olympics. So, you can see that vegetarians have a lot of
strength”. On 3 October 2010, he handed the Queen's Baton to Prince Charles in
the Queen's Baton Relay for the 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony.
He carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of 2012 London Olympics.

• Wrestler Sushil Kumar became the first Indian athlete to win
multiple individual Olympic medals since independence.
He became the first Indian with multiple individual Olympic
medals (bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver at
the 2012 Summer Olympics) since Norman Pritchard in 1900.

His name is mentioned in the Guinness Book of World Records along
with Udham Singh for having won the most number of Olympic
medals in field hockey (gold medals in 1948, 1952 and 1956, he added
a silver in 1960 when he captained the team). He was the first player
ever to earn 100 caps and competed for India. For the 2012
Olympics, the Bushey tube station in London was renamed after him
in the special "Olympic Legends Map". He was one of six all-time
hockey greats who were honored in this manner.

Olympics at the age of 16. ‘X’ holds the current world record
for the most gold medals earned by a female athlete in a
single track meet. She the bronze by 1/100th of a second.

He was a three-time Olympic gold medallist, having played a key role in India's wins in
London (1948), Helsinki (1952 as vice-captain) and Melbourne (1956 as captain)
Olympics. He is regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time, a modern-
day Dhyan Chand, a legend of the sport and is widely regarded as the sport's greatest
ever centre-forward. His Olympic record for most goals scored by an individual in an
Olympic men's hockey final remains unbeaten. He was the first sports personality to be
honoured with the Padma Shri award in 1957. He and Gurdev Singh were featured on
a stamp issued in 1958 by Dominican Republic to commemorate the 1956 Melbourne
Olympics. During the London Olympics in 2012, he was honoured in the Olympic
Museum exhibition, "The Olympic Journey: The Story of the Games” held at the
Royal Opera House. In a national poll conducted by the Patriot newspaper in the year
1982, he was adjudged to be the Indian Sportsperson of the 20th Century.
