We met many saints and many scoundrels.

3. • Sixteenth pope.
• Reigned 218-223AD.
• Merciful pope – allowed Christians who had
committed mortal sin to do penance and re-enter
the Church.
• Martyred either in popular uprising or thrown into a
well.
• Buried in the “Chapel of the Popes” in the Catacomb
of St. Callixtus on the Appian Way.
• Relics moved to Santa Maria in Trastevere.

4. • Lived as a slave to Carpophorus.
• Carpophorus decided to establish a bank for
Christians, especially widows so that their money
would be safe.
• Places Callixtus in charge of bank.
• Callixtus squanders most of the money and
embezzles the rest.
• Christian widows are destitute. Carpophorus is
irrate.
• Callixtus flees Rome.

5. • Carpophorus captures Callixtus on a boat in Portus.
• Carpophorus sentences Callixtus to hard labor –
binding him to a gristmill.
• Wronged depositors beg mercy for Callixtus.
• Carpophorus releases him with the instructions to
retrieve as much money as possible.
• Callixtus enters Jewish synagogue during the
Sabbath prayer service and demands return of
money.
• A riot ensues.

6. • Callixtus is convicted of disturbing the peace,
scourged and exiled to Sardinis to work in the
mines.
• Marcia, the mistress to the emperor, receives
permission to have all Christian prisoners released.
• Pope St. Victor I does NOT include Callixtus in list of
Christian prisoners.
• Callixtus begs to be released. Returns to Rome.
• Pope St. Victor I and Carpophorus are furious to see
Callixtus in Rome.

7. • Pope Victor I places Callixtus in house well outside
the city walls on the Appian Way.
• Callixtus is converted.
• He begins helping a priest, Zephyrinus.
• Zephyrinus becomes Pope, ordains Callixtus as a
deacon and places him in charge of Christian
cemetery on Appian Way – catacombs of St.
Callixtus.
• Zephyrinus dies and Callixtus is elected Pope.
• Callixtus is known for tremendous mercy.

• Year 1: We considered man in his relationship to
God and sought to become a man after God’s
own heart.
• Year 2: Provides men the practical tools they need
to become a man after God’s own heart.
• Year 3: We consider man in his role as husband
and seek to become the hidden face of Christ for
our spouse.
• Year 4: We will consider man in his role as father
and seek to transform men into the Revelation of
God the Father.
Understanding the Three Roles of Men
19. We are hungry for this as men and our lay men in
particular have been starving for this. This is truly
rich in what the Church teaches … The
manifestations of God’s presence happen suddenly,
sometimes profoundly. There is a real ripple effect
from this program in the lives of the men who attend
it.
