DORSET YOUNG ENTERPRISE
Summer 2014
What an amazing year it has been for Dorset YE
As enterprise in schools continues to hit the national
headlines, Young Enterprise in Dorset is proud to
celebrate the achievements of so many young
people in schools throughout the county.
Best known for our prestigious Company Programme,
it should also be remembered that here in Dorset we
offer so many other opportunities for personal
development for pupils up to year 11, for students in
6th forms and also in University education.
For over 50 years Young Enterprise has supported young
people, and this year here in Dorset we have seen an
astonishing level of support from all of our business
associates, sponsors and most importantly our volunteer
mentors and advisers.
Without your support, this vital work could not be
delivered. You will have seen in the local and national
media a great deal about the skills employers are
looking for from young people, as they move into the
workplace. These are the very skills that you help young
people to gain through our Young Enterprise
programmes.
We hope you find this newsletter informative and
stimulating, and inspires you to encourage others to join
the Dorset Young Enterprise network, and achieve the
same rewards you have enjoyed this year.
A huge thanks to everyone involved.
Schools, businesses and volunteers
working as one, to give the young
people of Dorset a stronger start in their
working life.

Employability, Empowerment & Enterprise
Now in its 7th year, this rewarding triple E programme has been
delivered in18 schools across the County, engaging over 90
volunteer mentors who have motivated and inspired around
450 young people.
Year 9 and year 12 students have participated in schools over
8 structured sessions, to improve their career prospects, and
prepare for the transition from educations to the workplace.
Each student concluded the programme with a realistic mock
interview, and set themselves short term and long term goals
for the future.
97% of participants felt better prepared for work as a result of
completing this programme
The programme in 2013/14 was funded by:
 Poole Borough Council
 Bournemouth Borough Council
 Dorset County Council
 Aspire BU
 Dorset LEP
 BNY Mellon
Company Programme
The prestigious and highly acclaimed Company Programme
allows students to experience the ups and downs of running
their own business for an academic year. In Dorset we had 24
companies begin their journey, with nearly 270 students from
20 schools across the county. More about the amazing
competition later in this newsletter.
Young Enterprise Company Programme is a brilliant
opportunity to learn about business, with the advice and
support of professional businessmen and women.
Thanks to all the numerous local businesses who supported a
company as an adviser, offered a meeting space or who
contributed financially.
Start Up Programme
The inspirational and hugely successful Young Enterprise Start-
up programme gives students in higher education the
chance to create their own company while still pursuing their
studies. Over the period of an academic year
undergraduates plan, create and run their own real firm with
business advisers guiding them every step of the way. More
about L:E the 2014 winners later in this newsletter.
Be a Mentor

programme runs for 8 sessions

off-site, with local schools
joining together for a
motivational event.

Generous Dragons Support
Dorset School Companies
Young students from across Dorset were amazed as the
generous dragons donated over £1000 cash to companies
competing in the Young Enterprise Company Programme, at
their Dragons Den style events in March.
Held over two evenings, 18 companies from schools across
Dorset descended on Barclays House in Poole, to pitch their
ideas to 6 Dragons each night.
The Dragons came from local businesses and included some
notable local entrepreneurs with representatives from
Schneider International, Martin Davies, Princecroft Willis,
NatWest, Greendale Construction, BNY Mellon, Merryhill
Envirotec, Newton Magnus, Coles Miller, Lester Aldridge,
Paget Reid York and Humphries Kirk.
In justifying their generosity, Dan Tout, Director at Princecroft
Willis Poole said “We are proud to be involved with Young
Enterprise and to see some of the innovative ideas and great
team working from our clients of the future!”
The emphasis throughout the company programme is on
teamwork and innovation but participants also gain valuable
insight into developing a business plan, finance, market
research, product development, sales, marketing promotion
and trading with the public. At the heart of this programme is
the Young Enterprise philosophy, Learn by Doing.
Start Up Winners
YE Graduate Start Up company, ‘L–E’ represented the
Southwest in London at the National Start Up Finals. The
company members Laura Schofield and Emma Caswell are
both Illustration students at the Arts University Bournemouth.
Their company L–E is based on the concept of unique gift
items where no two items are ever the same and plan to
extend in to a design agency. The girls were mentored by
Mark Masters from the ID Group who met with them regularly
to support them in their exciting business venture.

Success for North Dorset Schools
What an amazing first six months with Young
Enterprise! Imagine our delight when all four North
Dorset schools in the Company Programme Dorset
Final won prizes this year!
The North Dorset patch starts at Blandford Forum and
goes north. For those that don’t know it’s beautiful up
there! An idyll of rolling green fields and woodland
with the River Stour meandering gently to the bustle
further south.
Pupils and businesses face many of the same
challenges as those in the towns but there are
additional aspects of rural living that need to be
considered. We are working closely with schools and
employers to ensure participants leave our
programmes with skills relevant to their future
employment.
Please do get in touch if you would like to be
involved.

Link Teachers Champion YE
A vitally important role in every school is the link teacher
who is the school champion for Young Enterprise, and
link to school for YE staff.
The link teacher’s role is to support the students in their
journey from the initial registration through to completion.
Link teachers know their students best and their
knowledge and support is invaluable.
Every year all our link teachers are very much
appreciated, however, one person is nominated by their
students to receive the link teacher of the year award.
The 2014 honours went to John Reidy at Talbot Heath
School.

Host a company
Could your business host a
Young Enterprise company for
2 hours a week?
This would be during term time
from October to June.
You would need a room that
can hold up to 15 people,
plus advisers, with access
generally between 4.00 and
6.00pm.
Access to the internet would
be preferred, so that he
students can use the YE
Company Programme
website to support their
business and run their
management accounts.
External business advisers will
be responsible for the students
during the meeting, unless of
course you would like to offer
a business adviser as well.

Youngsters WOW at Company of the Year
Awards Ceremony
Young students from across Dorset wowed the judges at
the 2014 Young Enterprise Dorset Company of the Year
Awards.
Over 270 students from nearly twenty schools across Dorset
took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme this
academic year. Already whittled down from 18 competing
companies, the 10 finalists presented the results of their year
in business to an audience of nearly 200 people, including
the competition judges, business guests, teachers and
parents at the event kindly hosted by J.P. Morgan.
The panel of judges included local business leaders and the
Managing Director of last year’s winning YE company,
Saskia Cairnes from Clayesmore School. As well as the
presentations they were able to assess their company
reports, visit the company trade stands and interview
company directors.
James Robinson, Partner at PrinceCroft Willis and Chairman
of the Judges, said; “Year on year we are constantly
amazed by the innovation and confidence shown from the
teams; they really are a credit to their schools, families and
themselves. With this calibre of young talent on show I am
confident that Dorset will continue to produce the
entrepreneurs of the future.”
Prizes were awarded across nine categories and the overall
winner progresses to represent Dorset at the South West
Regional Final in Swindon in June. From there the winner
enters the National Final held in London in July, with the
whole competition climaxing at the International event,
which is part of the Young Enterprise Junior Achievement
network.
The overall winning company
was Nova, who designed and
produced an innovative
solution to the problem of
sleeping comfortably whilst
travelling; a travel pillow that
uses suction pads to stay put on
the car window.
Megan Bridgen, Managing
Director of Nova told us; “"The
whole Nova team are thrilled to
represent Dorset at the South
West Finals. We have learned a
great deal from Young
Enterprise; giving us all
invaluable experience on how
to survive within the business
world. It's a once in a lifetime
opportunity and we are so
grateful to be part of it.”
The Company Programme is
open to teams of students from
schools throughout Dorset. If
your school would like to get
involved, please contact Sue
Tattersall in the first instance.

Interviwing skills?
Could you join our team of interview volunteers, to
conduct short mock interviews as part of our EEE
programme?
The students are well briefed and prepared by their
mentors, and always really appreciate the experience of
this interview. You would typically conduct up to 6
interviews in a session, and could do 1 or more school
sessions. You choose.
Hosting job interviews
We try and make the mock interviews as realistic as
possible, so the students have to make their way to the
company and attend an interview.
Could your company provide a suitable interview room,
or rooms?
Interviews are held over a period of a couple of hours,
and interviews last 10-15 minutes each.
This a great way for a company to establish links with
their local secondary schools and give to their
community.

needs more volunteers
Young Enterprise is the UK’s leading enterprise
education charity. Together, we are building a
connected world of young people, business
volunteers and educators, inspiring each other to
succeed through enterprise.
Supporting Dorset Young Enterprise gives you the
opportunity to work with young people throughout
the county, and have an impact on their lives.
It is also an opportunity to put something back into the
community; and for some, the chance to learn,
develop and practice new skills.
Whatever your reasons, there are many different ways
to support Dorset Young Enterprise:
 as a volunteer, offering your time, knowledge,
experience and life skills.
 as a business, through employees, sponsorship,
funding, equipment donation or use of facilities.
 as a networker, advocating the benefits of
volunteering with Dorset Young Enterprise.
 as parents, friends and family, encouraging
young people to participate in Young
Enterprise programmes.
 as a Local Board member, help plan for the
future and strengthen Dorset Young Enterprise.
 as a teacher, being a link and the school
champion of Young Enterprise.

  • 1. NEWSLETTER DORSET YOUNG ENTERPRISE Summer 2014 What an amazing year it has been for Dorset YE As enterprise in schools continues to hit the national headlines, Young Enterprise in Dorset is proud to celebrate the achievements of so many young people in schools throughout the county. Best known for our prestigious Company Programme, it should also be remembered that here in Dorset we offer so many other opportunities for personal development for pupils up to year 11, for students in 6th forms and also in University education. For over 50 years Young Enterprise has supported young people, and this year here in Dorset we have seen an astonishing level of support from all of our business associates, sponsors and most importantly our volunteer mentors and advisers. You will have seen in the local and national media a great deal about the skills employers are looking for from young people, as they move into the workplace. These are the very skills that you help young people to gain through our Young Enterprise programmes. We hope you find this newsletter informative and stimulating, and inspires you to encourage others to join the Dorset Young Enterprise network, and achieve the same rewards you have enjoyed this year. • 2. Employability, Empowerment & Enterprise Now in its 7th year, this rewarding triple E programme has been delivered in18 schools across the County, engaging over 90 volunteer mentors who have motivated and inspired around 450 young people. Year 9 and year 12 students have participated in schools over 8 structured sessions, to improve their career prospects, and prepare for the transition from educations to the workplace. Each student concluded the programme with a realistic mock interview, and set themselves short term and long term goals for the future. 97% of participants felt better prepared for work as a result of completing this programme The programme in 2013/14 was funded by:  Poole Borough Council  Bournemouth Borough Council  Dorset County Council  Aspire BU  Dorset LEP  BNY Mellon Company Programme The prestigious and highly acclaimed Company Programme allows students to experience the ups and downs of running their own business for an academic year. In Dorset we had 24 companies begin their journey, with nearly 270 students from 20 schools across the county. More about the amazing competition later in this newsletter. Young Enterprise Company Programme is a brilliant opportunity to learn about business, with the advice and support of professional businessmen and women. Thanks to all the numerous local businesses who supported a company as an adviser, offered a meeting space or who contributed financially. Start Up Programme The inspirational and hugely successful Young Enterprise Start- up programme gives students in higher education the chance to create their own company while still pursuing their studies. Over the period of an academic year undergraduates plan, create and run their own real firm with business advisers guiding them every step of the way. More about L:E the 2014 winners later in this newsletter. Be a Mentor The Employability triple E programme runs for 8 sessions of up to 2 hours each. • 3. Generous Dragons Support Dorset School Companies Young students from across Dorset were amazed as the generous dragons donated over £1000 cash to companies competing in the Young Enterprise Company Programme, at their Dragons Den style events in March. Held over two evenings, 18 companies from schools across Dorset descended on Barclays House in Poole, to pitch their ideas to 6 Dragons each night. The Dragons came from local businesses and included some notable local entrepreneurs with representatives from Schneider International, Martin Davies, Princecroft Willis, NatWest, Greendale Construction, BNY Mellon, Merryhill Envirotec, Newton Magnus, Coles Miller, Lester Aldridge, Paget Reid York and Humphries Kirk. In justifying their generosity, Dan Tout, Director at Princecroft Willis Poole said “We are proud to be involved with Young Enterprise and to see some of the innovative ideas and great team working from our clients of the future!” The emphasis throughout the company programme is on teamwork and innovation but participants also gain valuable insight into developing a business plan, finance, market research, product development, sales, marketing promotion and trading with the public. At the heart of this programme is the Young Enterprise philosophy, Learn by Doing. Start Up Winners YE Graduate Start Up company, ‘L–E’ represented the Southwest in London at the National Start Up Finals. The company members Laura Schofield and Emma Caswell are both Illustration students at the Arts University Bournemouth. Their company L–E is based on the concept of unique gift items where no two items are ever the same and plan to extend in to a design agency. The girls were mentored by Mark Masters from the ID Group who met with them regularly to support them in their exciting business venture. Be a Dragon February 2015 will see the 34th Annual YE Dorset Dragons Den Event. This is your opportunity to be a Dragon for the evening and invest your company’s money in one or more of the YE Companies. Just like the television show. Students pitch for funds and the Dragons get to release their inner fire! Cost is £300 and is a really fun evening! Sponsor a Trophy The Dorset Award Ceremony would not be possible without the generous support of our trophy sponsors. You can choose an award that is specific to your industry or an award that you feel is particularly important to you. Cost is £150 and includes the opportunity to attend the award ceremony, present the award and say a few words about your company To find out more, email dorset@y-e.org.uk
  • 4. Success for North Dorset Schools What an amazing first six months with Young Enterprise! Imagine our delight when all four North Dorset schools in the Company Programme Dorset Final won prizes this year! The North Dorset patch starts at Blandford Forum and goes north. For those that don’t know it’s beautiful up there! An idyll of rolling green fields and woodland with the River Stour meandering gently to the bustle further south. Pupils and businesses face many of the same challenges as those in the towns but there are additional aspects of rural living that need to be considered. We are working closely with schools and employers to ensure participants leave our programmes with skills relevant to their future employment. Please do get in touch if you would like to be involved. Maggie Ayre, Young Enterprise Manager (North Dorset) Email maggie.ayre@y-e.org.uk M: 07899 984597 Link Teachers Champion YE A vitally important role in every school is the link teacher who is the school champion for Young Enterprise, and link to school for YE staff. The link teacher’s role is to support the students in their journey from the initial registration through to completion. Link teachers know their students best and their knowledge and support is invaluable. Every year all our link teachers are very much appreciated, however, one person is nominated by their students to receive the link teacher of the year award. The 2014 honours went to John Reidy at Talbot Heath School. Sue Tattersall presenting Link Teacher of the year award to John Reidy, Talbot Heath School Host a company Could your business host a Young Enterprise company for 2 hours a week? This would be during term time from October to June. You would need a room that can hold up to 15 people, plus advisers, with access generally between 4.00 and 6.00pm. Access to the internet would be preferred, so that he students can use the YE Company Programme website to support their business and run their management accounts. External business advisers will be responsible for the students during the meeting, unless of course you would like to offer a business adviser as well. To find out more, email dorset@y-e.org.uk
  • 5. Youngsters WOW at Company of the Year Awards Ceremony Young students from across Dorset wowed the judges at the 2014 Young Enterprise Dorset Company of the Year Awards. Over 270 students from nearly twenty schools across Dorset took part in the Young Enterprise Company Programme this academic year. Already whittled down from 18 competing companies, the 10 finalists presented the results of their year in business to an audience of nearly 200 people, including the competition judges, business guests, teachers and parents at the event kindly hosted by J.P. Morgan. The panel of judges included local business leaders and the Managing Director of last year’s winning YE company, Saskia Cairnes from Clayesmore School. As well as the presentations they were able to assess their company reports, visit the company trade stands and interview company directors. James Robinson, Partner at PrinceCroft Willis and Chairman of the Judges, said; “Year on year we are constantly amazed by the innovation and confidence shown from the teams; they really are a credit to their schools, families and themselves. With this calibre of young talent on show I am confident that Dorset will continue to produce the entrepreneurs of the future.” Prizes were awarded across nine categories and the overall winner progresses to represent Dorset at the South West Regional Final in Swindon in June. From there the winner enters the National Final held in London in July, with the whole competition climaxing at the International event, which is part of the Young Enterprise Junior Achievement network. The overall winning company was Nova, who designed and produced an innovative solution to the problem of sleeping comfortably whilst travelling; a travel pillow that uses suction pads to stay put on the car window. Megan Bridgen, Managing Director of Nova told us; “"The whole Nova team are thrilled to represent Dorset at the South West Finals. We have learned a great deal from Young Enterprise; giving us all invaluable experience on how to survive within the business world. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are so grateful to be part of it.” The Company Programme is open to teams of students from schools throughout Dorset. If your school would like to get involved, please contact Sue Tattersall in the first instance. Email Sue.Tattersall@y-e.org.uk Winning Company - Nova
  • 6. Link Teacher – Mrs Fiona Mackay, The Blandford School “The Young Enterprise Company programme has given the Year 12 students a unique opportunity to develop skills essential not only for the business world, but which will increase their employability.” The programme has led to the personal development of the students with many of the group blossoming and developing qualities such as team work, leadership and organisation. Be a Volunteer Business Adviser Behind every successful company, there is a network of supportive, encouraging and inspiring business advisers who come from all walks of life, small businesses, big businesses, retired people and students. All we ask is that you are able to commit up to 2 hours a week to help guide and motivate the students as they set up and run their own company. Full training is given and there is also on-going support available via the school link teacher and Young Enterprise staff team. • 7. Interviwing skills? Could you join our team of interview volunteers, to conduct short mock interviews as part of our EEE programme? The students are well briefed and prepared by their mentors, and always really appreciate the experience of this interview. You would typically conduct up to 6 interviews in a session, and could do 1 or more school sessions. You choose. Hosting job interviews We try and make the mock interviews as realistic as possible, so the students have to make their way to the company and attend an interview. Could your company provide a suitable interview room, or rooms? Interviews are held over a period of a couple of hours, and interviews last 10-15 minutes each. This a great way for a company to establish links with their local secondary schools and give to their community. To find out more, email dorset@y-e.org.uk Tenner continued success This year the Dorset YE team have supported local schools with their introduction of Tenner and the new Fiver activities.
