EMPLOYMENT
February, 2014 to Mediation Officer
Present Victim-offender Mediation Unit (VMU)
I commenced in this role on 10 Feb 2014 on a Fixed Contract and am currently
covering the Geraldton position, engaged in the Protective Conditions Process as
well as Reparative Mediation, for both adult and juvenile offenders. The position
involves an element of “Fly In Fly Out” to Geraldton. I regularly interview victims as
well as offenders in prisons and in the community, primarily to investigate the need
for any protective conditions to be put in place on relevant orders as protection for
the victim/s. I write reports for the attention of the Prisoners Review Board or
supervising Community Corrections Officers and figures show that to date I have
completed an average of 1.2 reports for every day worked. I have been told, by the
Manager of VMU, that I am one of the highest achievers in the Unit, both in terms of
quantity and quality of my written reports.
I have also taken on further responsibilities and roles within the Unit, such as Senior
First Aid Officer (SFA) and Safety and Health Representative (SHR). I appear to be
well regarded within the Unit by colleagues, I believe due to my friendly, happy
nature and willingness to assist others in their responsibilities – for example assisting
in maintaining stocks of snacks and drinks for staff.
I have received thank you letters, via the Manager of VMU, from a number of victims,
in which it is stated that I helped them to overcome the stresses and upset caused
by being a victim of crime, due to my understanding, non-judgemental attitude. I
have also received one letter of thanks from an offender, who also commented on
my attitude and non-prejudiced manner – this offender being an Aboriginal female.
Recently my work was recognised resulting in a letter of appreciation from the
Assistant Commissioner Astrid Kalders.
I have assisted in various workshops and presentations, such as presenting
information regarding VMU at Curtin University and at the Corrective Services
Academy. I have also written a number of scripts for potential inclusion to the Victim
Support Services website to promote VMU’s services to victims of crime.
January, 2013 to Store Manager
February, 2014 Battery World Welshpool, Perth, WA.
In this role I managed a small team at the Battery World store in Welshpool where
we sold batteries for everything from hearing aids to mine based trucks. The role
involved customer service, salesmanship and also the practical aspects of replacing
batteries in trucks and cars, as well as watches and key fobs. Dealing with electricity,
acids, heavy objects and trip hazards necessitated a high degree of health and
safety awareness and risk management.
November, 2012 to Store Manager
December, 2012 GoFit Platinum, Perth, WA.
In this role I managed a small team at the GoFit store in Westfield Carousel,
Cannington selling home fitness equipment, such as treadmills and cross-trainers.
This was my first retail/selling position. I have been complimented on the way I dealt
with customers in a friendly and approachable manner and managed to fulfil my
3. 3
KPI’s of selling at least one piece of equipment per shift. The role involved
encouraging passing foot traffic to stop at the ‘kiosk’ style store and engage the
customer in conversation to ascertain their fitness needs and match a piece of
equipment to those needs, finally closing the sale.
May, 2012 to Unable to work as in Australia on a Visitor’s Visa
November, 2012
August, 2011 to Customer Services
April, 2012 Bensons for Beds, Accrington, UK
In this role I handled issues and complaints from customers of Bensons for Beds,
ensuring that each and every issue was dealt with in a timely and efficient manner.
This role involved interacting with customers in a calm and respectful manner and I
used my well-developed interpersonal skills to resolve difficult enquiries with
customers who were often verbally aggressive. As this was a time of change when
three companies came together under one name, those companies being Bensons
for Beds, Sleepmasters and Bedshed, I was one of only two employees within
Customer Services who was trained to be proficient in all three computer systems.
As a result of this, within a month of starting in this role I supervised new staff and
this included training staff in the computer systems, as well as providing advice and
support whilst dealing with customers. During this period, I was promoted to a team
that dealt with high-level complaints. This involved further interaction and handling
customers’ issues until such time as they were resolved to customers’ satisfaction.
Shortly before I left the company to move to Australia, I was presented with the
‘Listen Award’ for exceptional service.
March, 2011 to Actor
July, 2011 Ribcaged Productions, Clitheroe, UK
From August 2008 until present I have been a part time actor, fitting in various
Television and Film roles around my work schedule. During the period March to July
2011, I was employed by Ribcaged Productions and appeared in two theatre
productions of Oliver Twist and Romeo & Juliet.
November, 2010 to Duty Manager
March, 2011 Samlesbury Hall, Samlesbury, UK
In this position, I was responsible for the smooth running of wedding functions at
Samlesbury Hall in Blackburn, Lancashire. I supervised the kitchen, waiting and bar
staff. My supervision and time management skills ensured that the kitchen, waiting
and bar staff produced the wedding buffet to a consistently high standard. As each
wedding was different, this involved excellent customer liaison skills, flexibility and
the ability to accurately convey customers’ requirements to staff. In addition, I was
responsible for bar stocktake, line cleaning and assisted in preparation of meals,
kitchen duties, hall cleaning and grounds maintenance.
December, 2008 to Duty Manager
November, 2010 Holiday Inn Express, Burnley, UK
4. 4
As Duty Manager I was responsible for everything that affected the guests’ stay at
the Hotel. I supervised a small team which included the reception, bar, kitchen
and housekeeping staff. I was given the position of Guest Experience
Champion, which involved training of all the staff in the Holiday Inn Customer
Service ethos of “Stay Real”. I regularly designed and facilitated training
sessions and am proud of the fact that on a number of occasions I have been
mentioned by name on TripAdvisor.com by a number of guests who stated that
their stay at the hotel was made more enjoyable by my direct input.
October, 1990 to Crime Scene Investigator
August, 2008 Lancashire Constabulary, UK
In October 1990 I commenced a thirteen week course to train as a Crime Scene
Investigator (CSI) or as we were then known, Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO). I
passed the course, both theoretical and practical sections, with high marks, and
commenced working in Burnley, Lancashire. During that time I became one of the
most efficient officers, regularly solving what was known as ‘Volume Crime’, such as
burglaries, assaults and car crime. I also attended a number of major crime scenes
such as murders, supervised by my sergeant. I considered myself a diligent and
efficient officer, known to achieve results and was soon transferred to Blackburn, a
busier division, at the request of the sergeant there. During this time there were
many changes – such as the introduction of computer systems, the provision of
improved and more complicated, radios and the improvement of the capability of
using DNA to help to solve volume crimes. I received training in all the new areas
and then trained other members of the team. It was during this time that I improved
my interpersonal skills, as I dealt with the victims of a crime, offenders, court officers
and senior investigating officers on a daily basis.
In May 2001 I was promoted to Senior Crime Scene Investigator. This meant I was
Supervisor for the department, based in Blackburn, Lancashire. As the supervisor of
a team of 12 CSI’s, I was responsible for the duty rota, daily work levels, stock levels
of equipment and the safety and wellbeing of the team. The role also meant I was
one of six Crime Scene Managers who would, on a rota basis, be ‘on call’ for any
major crime across the county of Lancashire. This would involve the supervision and
examination of numerous scenes involved in the one crime, ensuring no cross
contamination of evidence, and I regularly attended meetings with the Senior
Investigating Officer to discuss the evidential value of evidence recovered at the
scene, ensuring priority was given to the most significant evidence being forwarded
to the Forensic Scientists at the laboratory. I also attended briefings in order to keep
the investigating team of detectives, search teams and police officers up to date with
findings and analysis from the scene. During this time I completed a Diploma from
Durham University in ‘Scientific Support Skills to aid Criminal Investigation’.
In addition, I completed additional certified training in the following fields:
• Major Crime Scene Management
• Arson Scene Management
• Bomb Scene Management
• Mass Disaster Scene Management
• Crime Scene Coordination
5. 5
• Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology
• Presumptive Drug Testing.
January, 1985 to Registered General Nurse
September, 1990 Burnley, Pendle & Rossendale Health Authority
In January 1985 I commenced training as a Student Nurse at Burnley General
Hospital, a three year course. I took my final exams in January 1988 and in April
received my certificate, having passed with high marks. I initially started work on a
General Medical ward at the hospital, caring for patients who had suffered heart
attacks, strokes etc. I was then promoted to Senior Staff Nurse and worked on
another ward, primarily on nights, where I was responsible for the training and
supervision of Student Nurses as I was the only fully trained member of staff on duty
overnight on the ward. I undertook further training in Management, Risk Assessment
and Advanced CPR. This often meant assisting on other wards in resuscitation
procedures. It was during this time that I learnt interpersonal skills while dealing with
people in stressful and distressing situations.
June to December, 1984 Fire Engineer
Chase Fire, Burnley, UK
In this role I was trained to service fire extinguishers, and travelled around the United
Kingdom to numerous large retail outlets (such as MFI – a ‘flat pack’ furniture store)
to service their extinguishers.
June 1983 to Care Assistant
May 1984 Morris Grange, Scotch Corner, UK
In this role I assisted with the care of guests who attended Morris Grange, which was
a Red Cross holiday home for the elderly and infirm, giving both them and their
normal carers a break during the week in which they stayed with us. My duties
began at 5am when I would fire up the old wood burning stove so it would be up to
temperature in time to cook breakfast, and then spent the day caring for the guests
until the end of my shift at midnight.
December 1982 to Voluntary Worker
May 1983 C.A.T.S. Catterick Garrison, UK
Whilst looking for paid employment upon my return to the United Kingdom, I joined
C.A.T.S., a voluntary group, and carried out various duties such as decorating and
gardening for the elderly, helping to care for National Trust properties and work
required at local museums – primarily building/repair work.
July to December 1982 English Tutor
Hong Kong
On completion of secondary education I worked as a private tutor, assisting Chinese
children with English in their homes.
