LANGUAGE ACROSS THE
CURRICULUM
Prasanth P
Asst. Professor in educational
Psychology
GBCTE, Thalassery
Lets start
• Language is a form and means
of communication.
• Language is the product of
human mind and the vocal
apparatus which human
beings possess
• Language is the most
important tool man has
developed and devised for
ever.
Language helps him in many
directions-
–To make a living
–To build home
To nurture his children
• To nurture his children
• To satisfy all his needs
• Man alone is the creation bestowed
with the power of using language .
Definition of language
• According to American linguistics
Bernard Bloch and George L
Tager, “ A language is a system of
arbitrary symbol systems by
means of which a social group
cooperates.”
Nature of language
• Every language is a system :
• Language is an organized way of behavior
which can be described in an ordinary way
• Just like various systems in our body.
• As different organs in our body vary in shape
and size but they function in an organized
way.
Language is arbitrary
• It is not essential to have any
relationship between the word and
the object for which it is spoken.
• One can use different words for the
same object in different languages.
• World in English
• Lokam in Malayalam
• Monde in French
• Viswa in Hindi
• Alam in Arabic
Language is a system of symbols
• Symbols of language are its words.
• For better functioning of the language it is
essential that both the speaker and the
listener know words.
• Each word had a definite sound and definite
meaning.
The symbols of language are vocal
• The word language is originated
from the L:atin word “lingua”
which means “ which is
produced by tongue.”
Language is always changing
• Each language is living language.
• The language is constantly changing
and developing according to the
needs of the speaker.
• New words are borrowed and
absorbed from time to time.
Language is made up of habits.
• A person’s language reflects the
habits of the community to
which he/she belongs.
• Language is essentially habit
forming process.
• One can communicate one’s thoughts only
when has made use of the language- the
instrument of thought, a matter of automatic
habit with him/her.
Language is learnt
• Language is a skill.
• It’s a form of behaviour which is learnt.
• A new born baby does not know no
language.
• Only babbling and cooing
• Gradually learns a language spoken by his
parents…
Language is based on common cultural
experience
• Every language is a product of a particular
society and culture.
• Human language is transmitted from
individual to another not by physical
inheritance but by learning.
• We do not find exactly same words in two
different language, becoz cultures are
different.
Language is a form of communication
• Communication of thought from
one person to another is the main
function of language.
• Correct communication involves
correct usage of language
Every language is unique
• No two languages in the world has
same set of words , phonetic
symbols and grammatical pattern.
There are geographical and cultural
diversities and because of that
reason every language is unique.
Functions of language
• Three important functions of
language are
• Informative
• Expressive
• Directional
Informative
Expressive function of language
•To express feelings, to
evoke emotions and to
evoke same feelings
Directional function
•Thank you
