Importance of Cultural Awareness forTeachers
Overview
▪ Background information on Global Mindset
▪ Data from survey, discipline, demographics
▪ Plan proposal
▪ 10 Behaviors
What is Global Mindset?
▪ “Global Mindset includes specific knowledge, skills and abilities that
have been defined through scientific research.” (Javidan &Walker,
2012, p. 37).
▪ The world today is interconnected. The business world has had to
adapt to re-training employees to meet the needs of this
interconnected world.
▪ Teachers need similar training in cultural awareness. Students are
driven by the culture they are raised in and teachers need to have the
tools to deal with this.

Is there anything else you would like to share
about cultural awareness and education?
• We must be open minded at all times.
• I feel that a lot of times we teachers do not
understand or even know much about
other cultures and how it impacts
student’s behaviors.
• I wish others understood how much
culture affects a child.
• All about making connections.
• I have worked in various parts of the state
and with a variety of cultures.
• Though I feel I need improvement in this
area, I feel cultural awareness is very
critical in education.We always talk
about the idea that students need to
know you care about them before they
care about what you have to say. If we
don’t care enough to understand their
culture and upbringing then how can we
build the necessary relationships needed
for success in the classroom?
• I think cultural awareness helps build
relationships with students.
Overview of teacher responses:
▪ 40% are interested in other
cultures
▪ However, only 20% actually take
the time to ask about their
student’s culture
▪ 20% find the Hispanic culture the
hardest to connect with and 30%
find African Americans the
hardest to connect with
▪ 50% feel prepared when dealing
with other cultures
▪ 50% feel that professional
development in cultural
awareness is important
▪ 50% feel that their fellow teachers
are weak in cultural awareness
▪ 60% feel that they are strong
when it comes to cultural
awareness
▪ 70% feel cultural awareness has
everything to do with education
Correlation between teacher responses,
student demographics, and discipline
▪ 20% find the Hispanic culture
the hardest to connect with
and 30% find African
Americans the hardest to
connect with
▪ Demographics:
– 31.8% Hispanic
– 52.2% White
▪ Lunch Detention:
– 40% Hispanic
– 41%White
▪ ISS:
– 39% Hispanic
– 39%White
▪ DAEP:
– 36% Hispanic
– 36%White
What can we do?
What are ways to give teachers the tools to deal with other cultures…
In order to change the “cultural lens of teachers and see an increased level of
self-awareness” along with “a better understanding of cultural diversity and
the impact culture has on instruction” teachers must have professional
development that focuses on the following:
(a)“videos on culturally relevant teaching”
(b) “discussion of cultural identity of participants and how it surfaces in the
classroom”
(c)“discussion of the culture, values, and beliefs of the students in the
classroom”
(d) “completion of written reflections after each session”
(Dubose, S., 2017)
Professional Development options:
▪ Antecedent-Based Intervention – Region 13, Austin,Texas
▪ I Have Students Who Experience Emotional and Behavioral
Problems, Now What? – Region 6, Huntsville,Texas
– This interactive full day workshop is designed specifically for general and special
education teachers to learn tools, tips, and tricks for dealing with students who
have emotional and behavioral problems.Teachers will learn evidence-based
classroom management strategies as well as intervention ideas for students
with behavior challenges.
– Additional topics will include:
▪ Definition of an Emotional Disturbance versus Social Maladjustment
▪ Emotional Disturbance as a Special Education disability
▪ Characteristics of Emotional Disturbance and Social Maladjustment
Professional Development continued:
▪ Math, Culture, and Popular Media Day 1: Film Resources – Region
6, Huntsville,Texas
– Bring middle school math to life for all your students! If your students can text
like this: cul8r bff, they can solve this: 3x + 5 = 39 + 2x. In the middle grades
personal identity becomes extra important to learning. More than a decade of
research tells us that effective school mathematics has to be relevant to the lives
and cultures of every student. In this workshop participants will learn unique and
user-friendly ways to incorporate popular media from a variety of cultures in rich
and engaging math investigations.A wide range of math concepts, from
algebraic thinking to number operations and geometry to probability, are
embedded within dynamic activities. Day 1 of this workshop will focus on the
media of film. Engage your students with these amazing investigations from
popular films.
Professional Development continued…
▪ Responsibility Centered Discipline – Region 3,Victoria,Texas
– Responsibility-Centered Discipline uses a “Give ‘em Five” guided conversation to
train educators to incorporate five themes into their corrective conversations.
This process is helping schools build systems that help kids learn to take
responsibility for their behaviors, and thus, create an environment that brings
out the best in everyone.
Exchange Program
▪ We create a program with a district that
has different demographics
▪ Send one teacher from each department
to observe a teacher of the exchange
program
▪ The exchange teachers come back and
present the differences they observed in
a professional development faculty
meeting
Get to know your students…
• Model for your
students how to
create
relationships
• Model how to
accept and
appreciate
diversity
10 Behaviors Of Global Leadership
• Cultural Self-awareness – through a teacher survey
• Invite the unexpected – professional development focus
• Results through relationships – professional development focus as
well as the “I wish my teacher knew” project
• Frame-Shifting – professional development and year round
training/check ins – exchange program
• Expand Ownership – Give teachers tools to support themselves and
teach students through
• Develop future leaders – train teachers who then can train students
• Adapt and add value – combining local needs to work with those of a
multitude of other cultures
• Core values and flexibility – professional development focus
• Influence across boundaries – Create an outreach program into the
community with parents
• Third-way solutions – How to make this a reality in our district

Students are driven by the culture they are raised in and teachers need to have the tools to deal with this.

  • 17. Is there anything else you would like to share about cultural awareness and education? • We must be open minded at all times. • I feel that a lot of times we teachers do not understand or even know much about other cultures and how it impacts student’s behaviors. • I wish others understood how much culture affects a child. • All about making connections. • I have worked in various parts of the state and with a variety of cultures. • Though I feel I need improvement in this area, I feel cultural awareness is very critical in education. We always talk about the idea that students need to know you care about them before they care about what you have to say. If we don’t care enough to understand their culture and upbringing then how can we build the necessary relationships needed for success in the classroom? • I think cultural awareness helps build relationships with students.
  • 18. Overview of teacher responses: ▪ 40% are interested in other cultures ▪ However, only 20% actually take the time to ask about their student’s culture ▪ 20% find the Hispanic culture the hardest to connect with and 30% find African Americans the hardest to connect with ▪ 50% feel prepared when dealing with other cultures ▪ 50% feel that professional development in cultural awareness is important ▪ 50% feel that their fellow teachers are weak in cultural awareness ▪ 60% feel that they are strong when it comes to cultural awareness ▪ 70% feel cultural awareness has everything to do with education
  • 19. Correlation between teacher responses, student demographics, and discipline ▪ 20% find the Hispanic culture the hardest to connect with and 30% find African Americans the hardest to connect with ▪ Demographics: – 31.8% Hispanic – 52.2% White ▪ Lunch Detention: – 40% Hispanic – 41%White ▪ ISS: – 39% Hispanic – 39%White ▪ DAEP: – 36% Hispanic – 36%White
  • 20. What can we do? What are ways to give teachers the tools to deal with other cultures…
  • 21.
  • 22. In order to change the “cultural lens of teachers and see an increased level of self-awareness” along with “a better understanding of cultural diversity and the impact culture has on instruction” teachers must have professional development that focuses on the following: (a)“videos on culturally relevant teaching” (b) “discussion of cultural identity of participants and how it surfaces in the classroom” (c)“discussion of the culture, values, and beliefs of the students in the classroom” (d) “completion of written reflections after each session” (Dubose, S., 2017)
