5. What we're really talking about is a way of living your
life as if it really matters.
It’s about being present for the moments that are
yours to live, instead of being lost in thought, caught
up in endless emotional reactivity, or being led
around by the nose of your own likes and dislikes.

8. Mindful 3,4,5 Breathing Practice
When you hear the chime sit up straight in
your chair with both feet on the ground.
Your spine is as straight as you can manage.
If you feel comfortable and safe close your
eyes or soften your gaze on one object in front
of you that is not moving.
9. Mindful 3, 4, 5 Breathing Practice
1. Place your hands over your heart
on your chest and notice how you
are breathing right now. Breath
normally.
2. Now breathe in for a count of
three seconds and breathe out for
four seconds in your head.
3. On the next in breath, breathe in a
little longer for a count of four and
breathe out for a count of five.
4. Now move your hands down to
your abdomen or belly, and on the
next breath, breath in for a count
of five and breathe out for six
seconds.
Mindfulness and Nature
“Our minds and bodies are
embedded within the natural world
such that when we breathe in, nature
breathes in with us, and when we
breathe out, nature also breathes
out.
We are of the nature of nature; it
exists in us and we exist in it.”
10. 1 Million Animals and Plant species
are now threatened with extinction.
Nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human
history – and the rate of species extinctions is accelerating,
with grave impacts on people around the world now likely.
11. The care of nature is increasingly becoming an intellectual concept
severed from the joyful experience of the outdoors.
You have to wonder where will future environmentalists come from?
Despite biophilia and the growing evidence of nature’s benefits,
connectedness with nature seems to be diminishing. 2017

12. Research Studies on
Nature, Pro-Environment and Mindfulness
The effect of connectedness to nature on the relationship between
mindfulness and pro-environmental behavior suggests that
mindfulness increases awareness to pro-environmental behavioral
choices through the intensification of experiences with the natural
environment.

• Increases ecological and pro-environmental behavior
• Increases pro-social behavior
• Increases compassion for other people

18. Ecological
Mindfulness
“…This notion is based
on research which
suggests mindfulness is
associated with
ecologically responsible
behavior that is oriented
to the common good.”
Brown and Kasser 2005
“When people feel
connected with nature,
they are more inclined
to spend time in it and
protect it.”

19. Nature, Environment, Poetry and Mindfulness
“Argues the skills, that poetry, like mindfulness
cultivates, are useful beyond the page or classroom,
and ultimately are necessary to engage with such
global issues as the environmental crisis.”

20. I sit beside the fire and think of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies in summers that have
been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer in autumns that there
were,
with morning mist and silver sun and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever
see.
For still there are so many things that I have never seen:
in every wood in every spring there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago,
and people who will see a world that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think of times there were
before,
I listen for returning feet and voices at the door.
