Mahalin Middle School is located in Conway, Arkansas and serves 650 students in 6th and 7th grade. It has 67 classrooms and over 30 staff members including teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, counselors, nurses, and administrators. The school's mission is "Every Student, Every Time" and it aims to provide students a safe learning environment through its academic curriculum focused on core subjects and developing citizenship. As a service learning project, Mahalin Middle School students are building a butterfly garden at a local park to apply their learning across subjects and help the community.

• The role of a Middle School is to provide a safe
environment that molds students to become
positive pieces of their society. A Middle School
ensures that the focal point of the academic
curriculum shines on literacy, math, science and
social studies. A Middle School is also
responsible for cultivating and nurturing
citizenship and stewardship, developing an
appreciation of cultural diversity, and reinforcing
higher order thinking and technology skills.

• Mahalin Middle School is located in Central
Arkansas. It consists of 67 classrooms, over 17
specialized teachers such as PE, Music, GATE
Special Education, 14 paraprofessionals, 5
secretaries, 2 counselors, 1 school nurse, 2
Library and Technology professionals, and 2
administrators.

• Mahalin Middle School is a two story school
building with 6th graders on the top floor and
7th grades on the lower floor. Each floor is also
split between two halls. There is a Red Hall
and a Black Hall, designated for the school
colors.

• The goal of the Service Learning Project is to
create a common goal to improve the lives of
other through a community project. This year
Mahalin Middle School, in partnership with
the Hendrix Youth Center, will build a butterfly
garden at the local Aberium Gipson Park.

• Across the Curriculum for the Butterfly Garden.
– Science: The students will be able to learn Biology, Ecology, and
Botany with plants donated from local nurseries.
– Literacy: The students will be able to read literature based upon
plants and animals that will utilize the garden as well as
construct a brochure to advertise the butterfly garden.
– Social Studies: The students will be able to research
geographical areas in the United States that parallel the climate
and foliage of the butterfly garden and create a technology
report on it.
– Math: The students will be able to determine the physical area
and volume for each flower beds and the quantity of mulch
needed for all areas.
The students will each be given a rubric for each four classes.
23. Service Learning
• The Butterfly Garden takes place at Aberium
Gipson Park which is across the street from
Mahalin Middle School. The students will be
able to go during designated science classes
and required to work a minimum of three
hours during the weekend for each month.
