What is a Training Needs Analysis?
An assessment of the training requirements of a target group
in terms of:
1.number of trainees
2.their educational and professional background
3.their present level of competence and
4.the desired behaviour or skill level acquired at the completion of
Why bother completing a Training
• To allow any ‘gaps’ to be determine and have appropriate
training put in place to fill these gaps.
• These ‘gaps’ can be around the knowledge, skills and
attitudes required by a group of individuals to met a
specific set of objectives.
What are the main questions in a
Training Needs Analysis?
• Who are the target audience?
• What is their current knowledge on this topic?
• Why is this training needed?
• What do the learners need to know or be able to do by the
end of the course?
Objectives outline what the learner will be able to do as a
result of completing the learning activities.
The objectives should be written to be SMART
• Specific to the topic
• Measurable - measurement of success
• Achievable - Make sure that they are realistic and achievable
• Realistic - Include standards as appropriate
• Time-bound - Include time element
• Be aware of ..
Always start a training objective with:
• At the end of the course the learner will be able to.....
Objectives must be simple and clear
Make sure your objectives can be achieved.
Course must be designed so that activities meet the objectives and
provide learners with the opportunities to practise new skills.
Ensure training is relevant (The “what’s in it for me” factor)
