Why is this topic so
important?
“Burnout” has now officially been recognized by the
World Health Organization (WHO). The condition costs
the global workforce an estimated $1 trillion in lost
productivity each year according to a recent WHO
study.


But the good news is that it can be prevented. More
and more studies show that it’s not about a single
person but rather an organizational problem. That’s why
it’s so important that leaders take responsibility and
invest in prevention and implement a burnout strategy.

What is the definition of
“burnout”?
According to the WHO, occupational burnout is a
syndrome resulting from chronic work-related stress,
with symptoms characterized by:

Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion

Increased mental distance from one’s job

Feelings of negativism or cynicism related to
one's job

Reduced professional efficacy

How to implement a
burnout strategy
Understand potential problems. Ask yourself as a
leader what is making your staff so stressed. What do
your employees need to flourish? What can you do to
make the workplace a safe place that motivates
employees as opposed to one that causes frustration?


Frederick Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory
states that both basic needs and things that motivate
us need to be present in a workplace in order to be
satisfied. The researcher found out that satisfaction
and dissatisfaction are independent of each other.
Therefore both need to be taken into consideration.

schedule as much as possible

Appreciate people’s contributions
