Use appropriate
grammatical signals or
expressions suitable to
each pattern of idea
development – Claim
and Counterclaim
1. Look at the article from
Girls High Record. What
is one claim you can
identify?
2. List two pieces of
evidence in support of this
claim:
3. What counterclaim can
you find?
4. List two pieces of
evidence in support of this
counterclaim:
What is idea development?
Idea development is the
manner, pattern, or method by
which a writer or speaker
explains his main idea about a
topic in a paragraph or
paragraphs.
What are Grammatical
Signals?
Grammatical signals are writing devices
that signal relationships between
sentences or the one ahead of them.
Grammatical signals serve to maintain
text coherence. Grammatical signals are
writing devices such as transitional
devices, connectors, determiners, and
repetitions that are used to maintain text
coherence.
Grammatical signals can be
an aid in the development of
the following idea patterns:
A. General to Particular
B. Claim and Counterclaim
C. Problem- Solution
D. Cause-Effect relationship
What is a claim?
A claim is the writer’s stand on a
topic supported by evidence and
logical reasoning.
I believe that Japanese
literature was heavily
influenced by cultural
contact with China
and their literature
because the early
Japanese literary works
works were often
written in classical
Chinese.
This is the claim since it
expresses what the speaker
believes in and is trying to
prove.)
This is the claim since it
expresses what the speaker
believes in and is trying to
prove.)
What is a counterclaim?
A counterclaim is a statement that
provides an opposing or different
belief, perception, opinion, or idea.
Counterclaim or the opposite stand of
an issue to disprove it through
evidence and logical reasoning.
According to my
research, it was
Indian Literature
that had an
influence on
Japanese literature
literature through
the propagation of
Buddhism in
Japan.
To counter or argue
a claim, consider a
different opinion or
a contrary view.
Then provide the
evidence that would
back up your
argument.
Here are some examples of Grammatical
Signals can be used in Claim and
Counterclaim
People believe that rock music can make
teenagers rebellious because of its lyrics but, I
don’t think it is enough to make them go
against society. They say rock music
concentrates mostly on antisocial subjects
which influence teenagers’ views toward
society. However, a study shows that an
average teenager would not take the music
seriously, for he or she concentrates more on
the musical value of the song rather than the
inner meaning of the lyrics. Thus, even though
the lyrics in rock music show social rebellion,
it does not make teenagers rebel against
society.
Use appropriate
grammatical signals
or expressions
suitable to each
pattern of idea
development –
Problem - Solution
Problem-Solution is a kind of
writing that considers a
particular situation's problem
and gives solutions to those
problems. Basically, it has
some similar ways to cause
and effect essays specifically
on their patterns (Smith,
