7. • Tess is a Girl living in the late 19th Century in an village, even though it's only a four-hour
journey from London. Her father is the last ancestor of the D'Urbervilles—one of the oldest,
most gentle, families in all of England.
• ("Maiden No More") opens withTess back at her parents‘
house in the village of Marlott . She's had a baby as a
result of her connection with Alec, and has separated
herself from her friends out of a combination of
shame and pride. She works a few odd jobs to make
money, and things are going okay until her baby suddenly
gets sick... and dies. Tess is more worried about the baby's
soul than anything else, so she buries it in the churchyard
on the sly.
8. • Most of her friends and neighbors have
forgotten aboutTess's troubles But she hasn't,
so she decides to go to a neighboring county to
work at a dairy farm where nobody knows her.
One of the other workers at the dairy, Angel Clare,
Angel is learning about farming so that he can
move to the colonies in America and become a
wealthy farmer there. He andTess gradually
fall in love.
9. • Tess wants to tell Angel about her past, but she can't
bring herself observed it to him. Finally, the night
before they're imagine to get married, she write a
note about her past. But he never saw the note. On
their wedding night, he declare to her that he'd had a
strange woman in London long before he'd metTess.
SoTess feels like she can tell him about Alec, since
that wasn't her fault.
11. • “Hardy the novelist tells ;
• When Tess tells Angel on their wedding night about how she had sex with Alec
d’Urbervilles, he completely rejects her and goes off to Brazil without her. Tess
goes to live with her parents. When her father dies, she goes back home and
Alec d’Urbervilles comes to see her. He asks her to marry him. She keeps
saying, “no, no, no,” but when Tess and her family have nowhere to live, her
mother says thatTess will marry Alec.
• Tess’s husband Angel Clare comes back from Brazil and tries to track Tess
down. He finally finds her and it comes out that she is married to Alec and her
life is basically over. After he leaves, Tess goes and tells Alec that her husband
is back.
• Tess goes and finds Angel and they start running from the police. But, alas,
they cannot run fast enough. The police catch them, and Tess tells Angel to
marry her sister.They didn’t show it, but I’m pretty sureTess was executed.
