• “A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a powerful set of tools for
collecting, storing, transforming and displaying spatial data from the real
world” - Burrough(1983)
• A specific branch of GIS applied to the Transportation issues, commonly
labeled as GIS-T. It is basically the union of transportation information system
(TIS) and GIS.

WHY IT IS NEEDED? -
SOURCE- https://www.infrapioneer.com/gis-applications-for-transportation-engineering/
• In the past, information systems and database development within most
transportation agencies and most other govt. agencies has often been application
specific or even project specific.
4
• This causes problem with integration at the functional area level or interagency level.
• Nearly all of the data managed by transportation agencies in general are , or can be
and should be geographically referenced.
• Therein lies the key to integration.
• Benefits of Data Integration include data
collection and maintenance cost reduction and
improved data reliability.
• Integration generally makes it possible to study
many relationship among two or more data
elements.

GIS-T Studies
Data Representation Analysis and Modelling Applications
• How different transport
system components are
shown in a database,
including network and
technical and operational
features (capacity, speed).
• Data must be accurately
represented in a digital
computer environment before
a GIS may be utilised to
address real-world issues
• It shows how real-world
transportation activity may be
modelled using transport techniques.
Many of the common GIS capabilities
have been useful for GIS-T
applications to meet data
management, analysis, and
visualisation requirements.
• Transportation has evolved its own
analytic techniques and models, much
like many other industries.
• It shows what applications the
data and analytical capabilities of
GIS-T are best suited for.
For example-
• Intelligent transportation system,
Infrastructure planning
• Design and management
• Traffic monitoring and control
• Public transit planning, etc.

Integrating GIS
technology in
urban
transportation
planning and
modeling
Prastacos et. al.
(1991)
• GIS can be used to generate inputs for transportation models.
• GIS based travel analysis models can be helpful in forecasting
future travel pattern and analyse trips.
• It can be used in integrating land use transportation models.
• Decision Support System for Routing and Scheduling can also be
generated using GIS.
GIS-based
transportation
planning and
analysis: A
practical
implementation
Deloukas A. et. al
(1997)
• GIS can be used in metro development studies.
• The data collection part for these kind of studies is expensive but
after that the study benefits are much higher.
• Automated GIS geocoding can be used to record and code survey
address data which can help in saving time and efforts.

GIS and
transportation
planning: A case
study
Debbie A.
Niemeier and
M. Kate Beard
(1993)
• Land use evaluation done by using GIS can give more refined output
than the non GIS methodology for smaller areas.
• Both methods shows significant difference in terms of output.
A GIS-based
decision support
system for
planning urban
transportation
policies
Arampatzis et
al. (2004)
• GIS can be used for the formulation of urban transportation policies
that can evaluate the effects of traffic and take into consideration
how well such policies are being implemented so that the actions of
the relevant authorities are facilitated.
A GIS-based
analysis of
reachability
aspects in rural
public
transportation
Truden et. al.
(2022)
• Areas having poor Public transport reachability can be identified
with the help of GIS .
• Walking distance, cumulative elevation, and maximum gradient of
footpaths to stops of a transport system may influence the take-up
of public transport provisions in rural areas.

in the 21st Century
Harvey J. Miller and
Shih-Lung Shaw (2015)
• Today our capacity of data collection has been significantly improved due to advances in
technologies.
• GIS-T is facing challenges related to how to analyse big and dynamic data sets..

Jain et al. (2018)
• GIS offers a consistent environment in which the data for various planning goals may be merged.
The fundamental structure for an integrated roadway information system is provided by GIS
technology.
• The decision-making process in transportation engineering will undergo a complete revolution if
GIS technology is utilised to its maximum potential.
Designing Zoning Systems

Planning: A GIS-based
approach for Automated
Zone Design using Public
Data Sources
(Chandra, & Sahu,
2020)
• Researchers to divide the study region into smaller units known as Freight Traffic Analysis Zones
(FTAZs), as FTAZs need to replicate the current land use pattern and socio-economic features of the
study area.
• We can somewhat simplify the process of finding ideal FTAZs using GIS platforms, as this research
shows.

Improvement in Transit Service using GIS – Case study of
Bhavnagar, Gujarat
METHODOLOGY ADOPTED
The main goal of this study was to use GIS network analysis
techniques to optimise the transport service in the State
Transport Depot-Bhavnagar District region.
• Impedance value has been assigned to different turn at
the intersection of the road.
• Following the input of all data into the GIS, the lengths of
49 distinct routes received from the GIS and the length
information gathered from the S.T. Department of
Bhavnagar were compared.
SUMMARY -
SOURCE- https://www.infrapioneer.com/gis-applications-for-transportation-engineering/
• GIS can be successfully used in data organization, information
presentation and analysis.
11
• It was found that transportation agencies own numerous datasets.
Often, these datasets have diverse origins in individual divisions,
lack common location reference schemes, and suffer from poor
data definition and lineage tracking making their integration
difficult.
• As data integration evolve, the value for GIS increases likewise.
• Despite having various difficulties of using GIS in transportation
planning, the use of GIS is growing, and many innovations are
improving the transportation planning process.

SUMMARY - SOURCE- https://www.infrapioneer.com/gis-applications-for-transportation-engineering/ • GIS can be successfully used in data organization, information presentation and analysis. 11 • It was found that transportation agencies own numerous datasets. Often, these datasets have diverse origins in individual divisions, lack common location reference schemes, and suffer from poor data definition and lineage tracking making their integration difficult. • As data integration evolve, the value for GIS increases likewise. • Despite having various difficulties of using GIS in transportation planning, the use of GIS is growing, and many innovations are improving the transportation planning process.
