2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
As most of the magazines
have, I also have a big and
eye catching masthead.
The font also stands out
from the rest of the text of
the magazine.
I got some different,
but matching fonts to
make different articles
and headlines to stand
out and to make a
clean and tidy layout.
To attract readers the
circle with `WIN` in is
extra visible.
To show and emphasise that it is a
music magazine I chose to have a
medium close up picture of a boy
singing and playing guitar.
In the middle of the front cover I
have placed a bigger text with the
name of the band the boy is playing
in. The picture of the boy is in black
and white to draw extra attention
to the text and the content of the
magazine. Everything with colours
will then seem more interesting. As
the KING NO ONE text, and the
WIN box.
What's also very
important on front
covers is a date, price
and bar code.
3. I chose the same colours for the
contents page make a clear link
between the pages.
Some of the fonts are also similar
here as to the front page. I`ve used
minion pro as my dominating font.
as the front page to make a clear
and nice matching lay out for the
magazine and
Tutorials and guides are
very common articles in
music magazines. This is
to make the magazine
more interesting and not
just full of text. In these
articles you can find
something that may
come to use for you. The
magazine then also is
about the readers and
not only the famous
artists.
All the pictures is of people
that plays a kind of
instrument. All the pictures is
music related.
Drums, acoustic guitars and
bass can remind us of an
acoustic rock genre, what this
magazine is about.
For the company it is
important to reach out to
people, so to draw the
audience to like their
Facebook site and follow
them on different social
media sites they entice
the audience with
competitions with cool
prizes.
4. To show the fact that this
article is about a girl
that’s making music I
simply put a picture of
the girl it is about so
people may recognize her
and a guitar. The article starts with
a drop cap in a
different colour to
draw attention to the
introduction of the
article. If people read
this it is more likely
they will continue to
In the middle of the
article I placed a quote
written in a bigger
font. This is also to
draw attention and to
make the audience
curious.
The headline is big
and in a different
font and colour to
draw attention.
That is very
important to get
people to read an
article. If it stands a
bit out and looks
interesting more
people will consider
reading it.
On the black and white
image I`ve placed a
clearly visible red star to
make people notice that
Tyler's new album is out
and the audience will
probably notice it and
start to think about it.
5. How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
• My product represent a group of young people that are interested in rock music. It does this especially through pictures and
language.
My female model in the magazine wears jeans and a simple top. This challenge the female stereotype of girls wearing
dresses and skirts and makes she fit more to the rock genre.
Since my model is holding on to a guitar and the article is about her making music, the focus is more on the music and her
career, and that can show that she is more interesting in making good impressions with her music instead of her looks. She
went from being the vocalist in a band to making her own solo career, and the fact that she is playing guitar herself and not
only sings can also kind of challenge the female stereotype since the females are often seen as vocalists.
6. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
• Blaze has grown to become the largest independently-owned publishing company in the shooting sector,
and in the last few years had expanded into motoring, women`s lifestyle, art, and most recently video,
music magazines and related shows. They publish music magazines such as Acoustic, Bass Guitar Magazine
and Drummer.
My music magazine is mainly about acoustic rock. Blaze already got a magazine that’s called acoustic that’s
probably similar to my music magazine, except that my magazine is aimed more for younger people. It
could have been a good idea for Blaze to fill that gap and get a wider audience, from young to old.
Disadvantages could be that the magazines is quite similar to each other and continues about the same,
but if the target audience is different and one is more aimed for young people, it can be a huge advantage.
Also that the producer company maybe know where to sell the magazine and who likes to buy them.
7. Who would be the audience for your media product?
• The main audience for my magazine would be teenagers and young adults (age 13-25). The layout on my magazine is
modern and made for the younger generation. I am also writing about and having pictures of young and newly discovered
artists.
In the magazine there is also tutorials, posters, competitions and festival guides – something that is often more appealing
and tempting for younger people.
• Age: 100% of the audience is between 10-20 years old.
• Gender: 65.22% are females and 34.78% are males.
• 78.26% would like many pictures and less text, 17.39% would like more text and less pictures and only 4.35% of the readers
would prefer only text.
• What my audience would like to read about:
• The survey shows that the readers are almost
just as interested in the content as in layout
when they`re going to buy a magazine.
Rate out of 23 responses:
the layout, 60.87%
the pictures, 47.83%
the content, 56.52%
freebies, 8.70%
8. How did you attract/address your audience?
• I tried to make my front cover as attractive to my audience as possible since that is the first thing they will
notice. To attract readers I made a simple, but nice modern front cover.I used big writing on things and
articles that may be tempting, such as free posters and different guides, so the audience would notice it. I
also had a medium close up of a boy that’s singing – which can tell us it is a music magazine. I chose to
have the picture in black and white so the writing could stand more out, because young people are often
more into bright colours and thing with a bit more energy. I highlighted the text that says `special` under
the main headline to make it stand out and make people notice it. It is always more exciting with specials!
To make the magazine even more interesting for the audience I used a competition to attract readers.
9. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
• I have used Photoshop a lot the two last years so I don`t feel like I have learnt anything new when it comes
to that. I already knew about the use of layers and different methods to edit a photo so I didn’t feel like I
had to learn something new when I made my pages.
I was a little bit rusty on InDesign, but got a little bit of help with wrapping text around another object I
was fine.
10. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
• Since I`ve used Photoshop a lot before, and I didn`t really do any complicated stuff in InDesign, I can`t
really say I have learned a lot in that area. But after a lot of researching and looking at other magazines I
have learnt more about the audience and how to attract readers. I see everything from a broader aspect
and know more about how to make magazines look more professional. I am now more carefully of what
fonts I choose and where I place text and pictures on the front page.
