SIGHT LINE
A SIGHTLINE OR VISUAL AXIS IS A NORMALLY OBSTRUCTED
LONE OF SIGHT BETWEEN AN INTENDED OBSERVER OR
SPECTATOR AND A STAGE ARENA OR MONUMENT.
FOR EXAMPLE, SIGHTLINES ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT
CONCIDERATION IN THEATER AND STADIUM DESIGN, ROAD
JUNCTION LAYOUT AND URBAN PLANNING.
IN CITIES SUCH AS LONDON, CONSTRUCTION WITNIN SIGHTLINE
IS RESTRICTED TO PROTECT THE KEY VIEWS OF FAMOUS
LANDMARKS.
EMERY THEATRE IN CINCINNATI,OHIO.
DESIGN IS BASED ON ‘ISACOUSTIC CURVE’.

ROLE OF SIGHT LINE IN SITTING ARRANGEMENTS OF
AUDITORIUMSTAGGERED SITTING
1:To provide best
visibility from any
seat, no patron
should sit exactly in
front of any other
patron unless more
than one row
distant . This
requirement makes
it necessary to
stagger seats .
2:Staggering is accomplished by the
non uniform placement of seats of
varying widths in succeeding rows .
3: Unless the walls
of the theatre are
parallel (which is
acoustically
hazardous), it is
extremely unlikely
that more than a
very few rows can
be made up of
seats of uniform
width.
4:Seats are made with uniform
standards and interchangeable
backs and seats so that a wide
variation of seat width is possible ;
a variation from seat to seat of an
inch or two, cumulative enough to
accomplish satisfactory stagger
Important factors in theater design are clear and
unobstructed sight lines to the screen, the vertical
position of the screen being one
of the controlling factors. In the past, the screen
position was influenced by the stage level, and the
physical conditions of the theater,
such as the projection of the balcony over the
orchestra floor, the
height of the proscenium, and the projection
angles.
screen location on the stage
somehow became a b e d
rule and notwithstanding the fact
that the function was different
many motion picture theater?
came to be built still holding on to
the
traditional stage of the
“legitimate” along with the rule of
thumb that
the screen should be located 12‘to
24 inches above the stage.
The following methods for staggering the chairs are
5:Varying chair widths €or all rows with a varying
aisle indent and sometimes no indent at all. This
method is more corrective but requires special chair
widths.
6: By using three chair sizes in each
row and alternating the order
of the chair sizes every other row, for
example, five 19-inch, four 20-
inch, five 21-inch in all even rows;
with five 21-inch, four 20-inch,
five 19-inch in all odd rows. There
would be no aisle indent as all
aisle standards would be in
alignment, nor would there be any
loss of
chairs

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SIGHTLINE , HEIGHT & DISTANCE OF STAGE
AND VIEWER
*SIGHTLINE IS THE ONE OF THE IMPORTANT FACTOR
CONSIDERED DURING DESIGNING AN AUDITORIUM HALL.
*GOOD SIGHTLINES ALLOW SPECTATORS TO SEE ALL AREAS OF
A VENUE STAGE OR FIELD OF PLAY. TO ENSURE THIS DESIGNERS
UTILIZE THE C-VALUE
*THE ARCHITECTS AND ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN
STADIUMS =HAVE TO THINK VERY CAREFULLY ABOUT
THE WAY THE SEATS ARE LAID OUT IN ORDER TO
SQUEEZE IN AS MANY SEATS AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT
COMPROMISING ON THE QUALITY OF THE VIEW.
THEY USE AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION TO DETERMINE
THE QUALITY OF VIEW, KNOWN AS THE “C VALUE”,
WHICH IS THE VERTICAL DISTANCE IN MM BETWEEN
YOUR LINE OF SIGHT AND THE EYES OF THE PERSON
IN FRONT.
AN ARCHITECT WOULD DECIDE ON THE C VALUE THEY
WISH TO HAVE AND USE IT IN ANOTER EQUATION TO
FIND OUT THE REQUIRED HEIGHT OF THE STEPS
BETWEEN EACH ROW OF SEATS.
R= IS THE VERTICAL HEIGHT BETWEEN THE EYE AND THE
POINT OF FOCUS
D= IS THE HORIZONTAL DISTANCE BETWEEN
THE EYE AND THE POINT OF FOCUS
N= IS THE SEATING STEP HEIGHT
T= IS SEATING STEP WIDTH

VIEWING ANGLES AND SLOPE
•IT IS THE MAXIMUM ANGLE AT WHICH A DISPLAY CAN BE
VIEWED WITH ACCEPTABLE VISUAL PERPORMANCE
•ANGULAR RANGE IS CALLED THE VIEWING CONE DEFINED
BY A MULTITUDE OF VIEWING DIRECTION.
•VIEWING ANGLE IS MEASURED FROM ONE DIRECTION TO
THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, GIVING A MAXIMUM OF 180 FOR
A FLAT, ON SIDED SCREEN.
•A PROPER SLOPE MUST BE GIVEN TO THE FLOOR (IN THE
SHAPE OF PARABOLIC CURVE) TO HAVE OBSTRUCTION FREE
VIEW.
IMAGE SHOWING POSITION OF EYE ACCORDING TO DISTANCE
•VIEWING ANGLE DEPENDS UPON THE
DISTANCE BETWEEN THE VIEWER AND THE
PERFORMER.
•VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL ANGLES
DECREASES AS DISTANCE INCREASES
•IF IT IS A DOWNWARD SLOPE
THEN THE NORMAL LINE OF
SIGHT SHIFTS DOWNWARD.
•IF IT IS AN UPWARD SLOPE
THEN IT SHIFTS UPWARD

IMPORTANCE OF SIGHTLINE
A GOOD AUDITORIUM WILL HAVE GOOD SIGHT LINES
,BUT THE QUALITY OF SIGHTLINES DEPENDS TO A LARGE
EXTENT ON THE NATURE OF THE PROGRAMMING.
WHATEVER THE PERFORMANCE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT
THE AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE IT TOGETHER AND SEE EACH
OTHER AS WELL AS THE STAGE. THE AUDIENCE’S SIGHTLINE IS AN
IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE DESIGN OF
VIEWING VENUES.
FOR AUDITORIUM AN ALGORITHM IS
USED TO CHECK THE SIGHT LINE FROM
A SEAT TO DETERMINE IF IT IS
BLOCKED.
DESIGN OF PROPER SIGHTLINES
INCLUDES RESOLVING BOTH TECHNICAL
AND AESTHETICISSUE.
