  1. Australian statistics show that over 50% of schools there are 10-30 % of the children struggling w literacy requirements of the school and beyond And in 10% of schools it exceeds 30%
  2. Barriers to Learning and Opportunity We’re now in a world where we are requiring more and more literacy skills to participate in ever increasing digital world eg. Emails +++ since 10 yrs ago, SM, text messaging, online shopping. Students need to be prepared for an environment where they will spend more and more time reading and using information on the internet than they will reading from a printed book.
  3. Watch short video. This clip shows us what our world has become – where books have changed! Children are used to a digital world where you click on links and you see interactive videos and animations. The encyclopedia we all used to have on our shelves at home when we were studying is no longer in print.
  4. In our classrooms we have diversity. And that means if we had 30 kids in a classroom then we have 30 different learners. But traditional methods of teaching will look at applying the same tool to each child. Now we have technologies that allow us to adapt the tools to each child in a different way.
  5. We can do this by using a framework of Universal Design for Learning. This framework looks at learning through: Multiple Means of Representation Action and Expression Engagement
  6. You can find out more about this framework on the CAST website or the UDL centre website
  7. We’re going to look at different technologies available for literacy across the different areas of UDL. UDL is important as we move toward personalized, real-world learning and away from teachers as conduits of knowledge that use limited modes of teaching and delivery. Students differ in the ways that they perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them. For example, those with sensory disabilities (e.g., blindness or deafness); learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia); language or cultural differences, and so forth may all require different ways of approaching content. Others may simply grasp information better through visual or auditory means rather than printed text. In reality, there is no one means of representation that will be optimal for all students; providing options in representation is essential. MMR for a Student - How they gather facts and categorize what they see, hear, and read. MMR for a Teacher – Is how they present information and content in different ways Traditionally when I was growing up, the teacher stood at the front of the classroom with the blackboard and would say “here’s your book, go to page 10” Now we are in a digital world, we can provide information in different ways for kids with reading difficulties to take in information.
  8. For example, with my ipad I can have speech reading Turn on speech selection in iPad in settings eg email, notes, iBooks Now also with Read with Highlighting. And in safari, reader function in web browser comes up when predominantly text based page, as you select it, it strips unimportant stuff and just gives content Simple wikipedia in plain english how we present content to kids, how do they read stuff,
  9. So with speak selection feature –wont read most PDFs, or iBooks with multimedia, you also can’t change voices or changes a number of other features Vbookz reads PDFs with Highlighting. Can change rate. Could have powerpoint books you have created as modified text for individuals. EG. Go to Tarheel reader and save VOLCANOES as powerpoint, email to self and then open in vBooks Show can search for PDF in safari and choose “open vbookz” All do diff things. TTS /Audio Claro speak When we looked at Safari web page read out we are limited in options etc. If we copy that text into Clarospeak we can have: Voice rate Font – name, size, colour Background colour Highlight colour Save to audio file shake to clear speech Write something about volcanoes – take PDF info from vBookz or copy from Safari Video/Camera – record for students Explain Everything – do more Represent audio, video, text, pictures and can import from different places and export to different places EG student who needs to hear how to do something many many times, can rewatch simple addition, if away show sub teacher how to do lesson, homework reminders, visual supports eg. sequences
  10. 12. Students differ in the ways that they can navigate a learning environment and express what they know. For example, individuals with significant motor disabilities (e.g. cerebral palsy), those who struggle with strategic and organizational abilities (executive function disorders, ADHD), those who have language barriers, and so forth approach learning tasks very differently. Some may be able to express themselves well in writing text but not oral speech, and vice versa. In reality, there is no one means of expression that will be optimal for all students; providing options for expression is essential. Action & Expression Student - Planning and performing tasks. How we organize and express our ideas. Teacher – Differentiate the ways that students can express what they know
  13. Keyboard Split keyboard shortcuts hidden keys Voice to text option Camera – kids can use photos and video to express themselves Camera connection kit to plug in other alternative keyboards
