2. Initial Reaction
My initial reaction to the set brief is realising just how difficult this project is going to
be for me to create.
In our first project with Irn Bru, we also had to create a video game. That project was a
lot simpler but I still struggled immensely with the process of actually creating the
game.
I, myself don’t play video games so I don’t have the inside knowledge of how a game
should work to keep people interested. I know having a reward system in place keeps
people wanting to play your game but I'm not quite sure how to go about it.
The other thing that makes me more worried about this project is that in the brief the
age range we are creating the game for is ages 16-19, I would have preferred for the
brief to include a younger age range as I have more ideas of how to go about creating
the game.
3. Idea Generation
Criminal Minds Inspired
You have to solve various cases within the BAU, you will eventually move up the ranks to become chief, however the cases get harder and as well
as moving up you can also move back down or be kicked out.
How the game works is it looks at a case, you're given a profile that should fit the unsub and a list of people, their jobs family life etc., out of that
list you must pick 3 potential unsubs and interrogate them. This involves multiple choice options and you have to direct the interrogation as you
see fit. Then choose who you think committed the crime if done correctly then you get a promotion if not you get kicked out (only on the first
round, after that you just get demoted).
Pros
- Would be great for fans of the show
- Would be very interesting as you would be learning about how the BAU works
Cons
- Would be hard to make realistic.
- Would be hard to try and make it as there is a lot going on visually.
- Even with the multiple choice questions, the game could just get quite boring and predictable
University
You’ve just started uni and are given a set budget, you have to figure out how you’re going to work with the money you have and everything you
have to buy. Learn how to budget money with grocery trips, nights out and bills!
Pros
- For anyone struggling with budgeting money or going to university, this game could give them some advice.
- In general it could be quite interesting learning how to budget your money in a game friendly.
Cons
- Could potentially be quite a boring game as people normally play games to escape reality not to still stay in reality.
- Has a very specific target audience that might not even be interested.
Underwater
The princess to the mermaid throne has been kidnapped, With no other heir to the throne it is crucial to the survival of the underwater world
that she is found and brought back. The game involves finding clues around the castle and connecting them to the culprit.
Pros
- The game would have really good graphics as there is a lot to explore when drawing the ‘underwater world’.
- The storyline to the game would be quite interesting and exciting which would keep the players interested.
Cons
- The foundations of the game could be a little too young for the age group that I have been given, unless I designed the game to be more
mature.
4. Club Rhino
Inspired by club penguin but instead of penguins its Rhinos! You would start the game with a baby rhino and you can watch it grow up, start a
family etc.,
However if its not checked on at least very two days it can get very ill and die, this would introduce the reward system that keeps players wanting
to come back to the game.
Pros
- Would be a fun care-free game.
- Would have fun graphics with lots of animals
Cons
- The foundations of the game could be a little too young for the age group that I have been given, unless I designed the game to be more
mature, which I don’t think would work with the storyline.
Mission Impossible
You are on a mission that ends at the top of the mountain but oops you triggered an avalanche, your only hope is to continue working up and
avoid the snow balls and objects which are coming down.
Side scrolling game. Gets harder the further you go up the mountain.
Different things can have an influence over your jumps – Weather- Wind you have to do bigger and longer jumps. Snowing makes it harder to
jump so have to tap more to make the jump.
Pros
- Would be a game designed to be played for any length of time, so would widen the target audience dramatically.
- It would be a fun care-free game
Cons
- Could get quite boring and predictable with the weather changes and ‘surprise’ obstacles.
Lara Croft/James Bond inspired
Have a character that is customable, that is given a set mission/task to complete. Can have scenes of fighting, casinos and fancy houses. At the
end the the person who originally gave them the task pops up with another task to complete (only if they succeed on the first), introducing the
reward system.
Pros
- Would have great graphics as there would be a lot of scenes to create.
- Having the character be customable would make the game more personal to each individual player.
Cons
- There are lots of similar games out there, so this would be just another ‘mission’ styled game.
Idea Generation
5. Idea Generation – Chosen Idea
Lara Croft/James Bond inspired
Your character is given a set mission to complete. This set mission will for example be having to rescue a prisoner from an
enemy camp. However within this set mission there will also be small tasks that the character can chose to complete that
will earn them rewards that will help their journey e.g./ a horse, sword etc.
They are given the mission through a cut scene. The person who gives them the mission can be a neighbor who the
character thought was your normal old man but he is a retired assassin. He knows of the group who took the mother and
knows what they are capable of. So he warns the character they need to go rescue the mother. He can guide the character
throughout the game as he is knowledgeable of that kind of thing given his past.
For it to actually make sense for the character to go the prisoner can be their mother. Having this would add to the story
line that is needed for the player to stay interested and invested in playing the game.
Have a character that is customable. Girl, Boy. Different clothing, shoes hair, eyes face shape, body size.
Can have scenes of fighting, casinos and fancy houses. These can just be simple screengrab (no movement) to explore the
different settings a character might have to travel through. This would help display more of what could happen within the
game.
They are equipped with a bow and arrow as well as a dagger, these weapons can be improved if they move up levels (When
they complete one task and move onto the next). This brings the reward system into the game which will convince the
character to play on to see what else they can achieve.
At the end the person who originally gave them the mission pops up with another mission to complete (only if they succeed
on the first). This further encourages the character to play on as they realise the game continues and more tasks lay ahead
of them.

7. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images
styles/fonts/tone/mood
- The colours in my mood board are all connected, they are very muted almost boring shades of colour. For example, a white
shirt will be so covered in stains and blood that it comes across as more of a grey than a white. Regarding my own video
game I will follow this colour scheme to make it look more legit but will try and introduce some brighter colours to try and
make the game appear more exciting and alive.
- I included lots of images of Lara Croft as she is the main inspiration for this game. When creating my game I would like the
default character to look like Lara Croft (it can then be customised). So for that reason there are lots of images of her to help
me come up with my default character will look.
- The tone and mood of my video game is very tense and seems to be on the edge of danger, this is exactly how I need my
video game to feel as it needs to make the players take the game seriously.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
- My mood board will influence my final product by helping me to visualise how I want the video game to look. It will be my
inspiration for how my characters and settings will look. It will also give me inspiration for storylines within my game. Overall it
will have a big effect on my final product.
