6.1.3 national and global energy resources tmid
1. 6.1.3 National and global energy resources Name……………………
http://www.darvill.clara.net/altenerg/index
The main energy resources available for use on Earth include: fossil fuels (coal,
oil and gas), nuclear fuel, bio-fuel, wind, hydroelectricity, geothermal, the tides,
the Sun and water waves. A renewable energy resource is one that is being (or
can be) replenished as it is used. The uses of energy resources include:
transport, electricity generation and heating.
(Q1) Sort the main energy resources on Earth into non-renewable & renewable
resources:
Non-renewable Renewable
(Q2) Explain what a renewable energy source is.
(Q3) Name the fossil fuels:
(Q4) Why are the fossil fuels non-renewable?
(Q5) What are all the different energy resources mainly used for?
Q6) Give and explain two examples of unreliable energy resources?
(1)
(2)
(Q7) Which energy resources are more reliable than wind and solar energy?
2. (Q8) There are environmental impacts from using different energy resources.
Make bullet points on what these may be in the table:
Energy resources Environmental impact
Coil/oil/gas
(burned in power stations)
Oil
(burned as a fuel in cars,
planes, trains etc)
Coal/Oil/Gas
(burned in schools, hospitals
etc for heating)
Wind
(used by wind turbines both
inland and off-shore)
Water
(stored in reservoirs for
hydroelectricity generation)
Water
(Trapped by tidal barrages in
estuaries for electricity
generation)
Water
(waves used to generate
electricity near the coast)
Geothermal
(hot rocks underground used to
heat water to steam)
Bio-fuel
(made form plants grown for
making bio-fuels)
Nuclear
(used in nuclear power stations)
3. (Q9) Explain patterns
and trends in the use of
energy resources.
(Q10) What is consumption of energy
resources mainly used for?
(Q11) Why has the consumption of
energy resources increased so much?
(Q12) What is the environmental impact of the increased of energy
resources such as fossil fuels?
4. (Q13) Science has the ability to identify environmental issues arising
from the use of energy resources but not always the power to deal
with the issues because of political, social, ethical or economic
considerations. Think about what some of these issues might be and
mote them down in the table below:
Issues linked to the use of energy resources
Political Social
Ethical Economic
Key words: money economy money jobs power
manufacturing pollution environment habitats species
endangered Shared world resources people waste nations
customers modern appliances quality transport farming
food inequality moral beliefs electricity demand trade
