Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)
• Recognized standard for project management profession - defines set of standard terminologies and
guidelines for project management practice
• A framework that describes the project management life cycle ( process groups), and outlines set of

• First published in 1987 by the Project Management Institute (PMI), Current 4th Edition published 2008.

Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK)
• Recognized standard for practice of Business Analysis - defines generally accepted practices in the
field of Business Analysis
• A framework that describes Business Analysis areas of knowledge, their associated activities and tasks
and the skills necessary to be effective in their execution
• First published in 2006 by the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), Current Version 2.0.

3. Project Management - PMBOK
• Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to
project activities to meet project requirements.
• Project management is accomplished through the appropriate application and
integration of 42 logically grouped processes compromising 5 process groups. (project
lifecycle), These 5 process groups are:
• Initiating: performed to define new project or new phase of an existing project by obtaining
authorization to start project or phase
• Planning: required to establish scope of the project, refine the objectives, and define the
course of action required to attain the objectives the project was undertaken to achieve
• Executing: performed to complete work define in PM plan to satisfy project specification's
• Monitoring & Controlling: required to track, review and regulate the progress &
performance of the project; identify any areas where changes to plan are required; and
initiate corresponding changes
• Closing: performed to finalize all activities across all process groups to formally close a
project or a phase

• Business Analysis is the set of tasks and techniques used to work as a liaison among
stakeholders in order to understand the structures, policies and operations of an
organization; & to recommend solutions that enable an organization to achieve its goals
• Business analysis understands how organizations function to accomplish their
purposes, and defining the capability an organization requires to provide products and
services to stakeholders.
• BABOK defines 6 knowledge areas and 32 tasks which define what a BA practitioner
needs to understand and the tasks he/she must perform. These KA’s are:
• Business Analysis Planning & Monitoring (6 Tasks)
• Elicitation (4 Tasks)
• Requirements Management & Communication (5 Tasks)
• Enterprise Analysis (5 Tasks)

Area's explored
• Business Analysis Planning & Monitoring: covers how BA’s determine which
activities are necessary to complete BA efforts, It covers identification of
stakeholders, selection of business analysis techniques , the process that will be
used to manage requirements and how to assess progress of work. The task in
this KA govern the performance of all other business analysis tasks.
• Elicitation: defines how BA’s work with stakeholders and understands their needs
and concerns, and understand the environment in which they work . The purpose
of elicitation is to understand the stakeholders actual underlying needs are
understood than their stated superficial desires.
• Requirements Management & Communication: defines how BA’s manages
conflicts, issues & changes in order to ensure stakeholder and project teams
remain in agreement to solution scope & how requirements are communicated to
stakeholders and knowledge gained by BA is maintained for future use
8. Business Analysis – BABOK – Knowledge
Area's explored
• Enterprise Analysis: defines how BA’s identify a business need, refine and clarify the
definition of that need, and define solution scope that can feasibly be implemented by the
business. This KA describes problem definition and analysis, business case development,
feasibility studies and the definition of solution scope.
• Requirements Analysis: describes how business analysts prioritize and progressively
elaborate stakeholder and solution requirements in order to enable the project team to
implement a solution that will meet the needs of the sponsoring organization and
stakeholders. It involves analyzing stakeholder needs to define solutions that meet those
needs, assessing the current state of the business to identify and recommend improvements,
and verification & validation of the resulting requirements.
• Solution Assessment & Validation: describe how business analysts assess the proposed
solutions to determine which solution best fits the business need, identify gaps and short
comings in solutions and determine necessary workarounds or changes to the solution. It
also assesses how business analysts assess deployed solutions to see how well they meet
the original needs so that the sponsoring organization can assess the performance and
effectiveness of the solution.
