This presentation illustrates websites, database, programming and print design collateral, I worked on in either finished art, design and or project management roles through 1998 – 2004. It’s funny looking back on it now, as it seems a lifetime ago when I was elbows up in code. Although I am no longer a designer or programmer, it was a fun time and I learnt a lot that I have been able to use in business.

The IM-1 treats raw water up to 200 NTU and puts out over 10,000 litres of pure drinking water a day that conforms to WHO guidelines. That's enough clean water for up to 50 families, or 200 people for drinking, cooking and basic sanitation. Another way of looking at it is drinking water for over 4,000 people!! And all from a small box that would fit in the back seat of a 2-door sports car.

Small World Initiative for Women’s Security and Children Orphaned (SWIWSCO) is a Tanzanian licensed National Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) . It is dedicated to improving the lives of Women, orphans, Street, Hard Circumstance and other vulnerable children, SWIWSCO is located in Moshi, Kilimanjaro Tanzania, at base of spectacular Mt. Kilimanjaro. One half of Tanzania’s population is below the age of 18 and up to 60% of the children live in desperately poor conditions with little or no access to education, health care, food, shelter or legal rights. While many of the children are orphaned due to loss of both parents, a significant number are categorized as orphans due to the death or abandonment of one parent. The remaining parent or other caregiver, most often a woman, struggles to support the family on less than $1.00 a day. This is the reality that SWIWSCO addresses through it's program for children and plans to support women on their journey to independence. Please take a moment to review the remaining pages on our website. Thank you for your interest and support.

Whether from our professional experiences, strong social justice orientations, or the stories we hear from children in care, care leavers, and foster carers, most of us just know that education has the potential to make a significant contribution towards improving the life-chances of children and young people in OOHC. From countries as diverse as Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, United States, Wales, and Australia, we now have a relatively strong body of research literature on the education of children and young people in OOHC, to support such beliefs. Across these studies, we now also have a better understanding of: the educational challenges that children and young people across these countries face; the competing underlying explanations; and some of the more promising individual policy and practice initiatives that appear to be making a difference to the lives of some. However, what we seem to know much less about is how to go about effecting successful system-wide change. Based upon the experiences of four jurisdictions overseas that appear to be having some success in relation to the education of children and young people in OOHC as case examples, the paper: identifies areas of possible success; examines respective contexts, approaches, and explanations for how such success is being realised; and explores possible lessons for other jurisdictions. While 'one size does not fit all', a range of strategic, policy, leadership, professional, and structural issues, are discussed. The four case examples are England, Scotland, Sweden, and Ontario Province in Canada.

The IHC Childrens Rights Seminar on 23 March in Wellington which focused on Early and Sustained Support for Children with a Disability was a resounding success! Government and non-Government agencies, parents, advocates, and professionals from all sectors came together to discuss a range of issues facing children with a disability and their families in early life. The three presentations from the seminar can be accessed here and a further document stating IHC’s round up of the issues and plan for action will be released shortly. IHC also announced the beginning of a new e-discussion group on this topic which received huge support, if you are interested in joining this group please email laura.o.donovan@ihc.org.nz indicating your interest and what you would like to get from this discussion group.
