Research Experience
March - 2007-Oct 2007
ResearchExperienceUndergraduateInternship,NationalScience Foundation funded;
Northern New Mexico College-Los Alamos National Laboratory
Evaluated mass spectrometry protein-derived data and made recommendations for
use and purchase of Protein Identificationsoftware.
Became knowledgeable of various mass spectrometry ionization
technologies/techniques including Matrix-Assisted-Laser desorption Ionization
(MALDI),Electrospray ionization (ESI),Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI).
Learned fundamental laboratory techniques including proper safeguards for sample
handling, waste generation/waste disposal, reagent storage, flammables and
corrosivehandling.
October - 2007 – May 2010
Undergraduate Research Student, Bioscience Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory
Became proficient in Biochemistry techniques and instrumentation, i.e.
spectrophotometry, UV-VIS,multidimensional HPLC forprotein and small molecule
separations, high-affinity based separations, spectroscopy, gel electrophoresis.
Designed and manufactured a functionalDesorption Electrospray ionization (DESI)
source to retrofit a Thermofinnigan LCQ Mass Spectrometer.
Performed analyticalbiological assays, both quantitative/qualitative;
2. 2
Biological sample preparation techniques including bacterial/mammalian celllysis,
protein extraction/purification, protein enzymatic digestion.
June - 2010 – 2015
Graduate Research Student- New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, NM
Understanding localclimate change effectsand interactions of fresh-water stream
loading, of limiting nutrients such as phosphorus, nitrogen. Study area: Valles
Caldera National Preserve, Jemez Springs, NM.
Coursework included Surface hydrology, limnology, agro-ecology, watershed
management practices, Statistics, remote sensing/GIS.
Analytical methods used: Ion-chromatography, graphite-furnace Atomic Absorption
spectrometry, and other photometric instrumentation.
Performed extensive method development of twophotometric assays for
measurement of total phosphorus. Goals were to adapt a current EPA method to
newer instrumentation that allowed high throughput analysis, cost saving and
improved range in limit of detection. This was collaborative workbetween NMHU
and LANL.
June - 2010 – 2015
Graduate Research Student, Bioscience Division, Los Alamos National Laboratory
Performed method development using mesoporous silica thin film as means to
analyze small molecule as a matrix-free application.
Developed methods utilizing Ionic liquids (molten salts) used as a multifunctional
dyes extraction technique that also served as a MALDI-MS ionization matrix used for
in an FBI funded counter-terrorism project.
Integrated experimental data using system biology softwareto understand system
level effectssuch as protein expression, protein functionand understand cellular
pathways
Interpretation of toxological effectsof nanomaterial i.e. fullerenes, quantum dots,
exposure on skin, lung cellculture, and tissue.
Worksupported by Laboratory Directed Research and Development-Direct
Research: Nanotoxicity:Assessing the potential health Hazards of Nanotechnology.
Responsible forgenerating mass spectral data leading to conclusions affecting gene
and protein regulation changes as a result of nanoparticle exposure.
Work highlighted on Los Alamos Science and Technology Magazine 1663, March
2013 publication. See http://www.lanl.gov/discover/publications/1663/2013-

Primary workin the ATHENAproject are:
Provide metabolomics data: Identify small molecules that metabolize by a human-
derive organ construct being developed by our collaborative team. UPLC-IM-MS,
software analysis, and database interrogation capabilities/techniques are used.
Responsible authority for overseeing the procurement, site preparation, installation,
validation, operation of two Ion Mobility Mass spectrometers.
Serve as the Person-In-Charge for Mass spectrometry capability at TA-43 Bioscience
Division. Oversee, assist in experimental design, operate and carryoutall
experimental workinvolvingsample preparation, HPLC, Mass Spectrometry and
data analysis.
Integration of UPLC-IonMobility Mass Spectrometry techniques for Metabolomics/
Proteomicsfor toxicologicalorgan screening.
Operate a coupled Agilent Gas Chromatograph use forseparation of lipid before
employing Ion Mobility Mass spectrometry techniques.
Proficientin Biological Safety Level 1 and 2 lab activities.
Familiar with many analytical techniques and very proficient in troubleshooting; I
feel that is my my strong suit.
Familiar with many softwaresuites supporting analyticalinstrumentation and learn
operation of software fairly quickly.
Developed many method briefs, guides and standard operating procedures for
various applications.
Managed, mentored, and oversaw all experimental activities of student researchers
in the Mass spectrometry Lab. Student ranged from high school COOP’s,
undergraduates, and graduate students. 13 students over the last 8 years.
Very familiar with, and have standing relationships withsales and technical support
with the followinganalytical companies: Water Corporation, OI Analytics, Applied
Biosystems, AB Sciex, Dionex, Proxeon,Agilent, ThermoFisher, Bruker, and
Shimadzu.
Collaborations: Most projects required collaboration across multiple disciplines and
throughout other divisions at LANL; other collaborators include those from
universities and industry.
Comfortable with giving technical talks and engaging with other professionals in the
field.
