Retort Pouch Technology From Indonesia Toppan Printing
1. RETORT POUCH
Retort is a cooking process that uses heat and pressure to cook food
in its sealed package. Retort Pouches conditions are quite
demanding with temperatures typically ranging from 120°C to
130°C. Different retort grade films which are laminated together to
provide the strength, toughness, puncture and burst resistance that
enable flexible retort pouches to resist the retort process condition.
The particular retort pouches used for several products consist of four
layers bonded in a lamination machine. Starting from outside, the
layers are:
Polyester PET Provides a gloss and rigid layer, may be printed
inside.
Nylon Bi-Oriented Polyamide, provides puncture resistance.
Aluminum Al Provides a very thin but effective gas barrier.
Food-grade cast polypropylene or CPP Is the sealing layer.
Furthermore, Retort pouches and packaging can be produced in two
variants one is aluminum foil laminated and another transparent.
Common structure of retort pouch :

PET/AL/CPP PET-SiOx or PET-AlOx/ON/CPP

2. Required Quality for Retort Pouch :
1. Heat resistance No deterioration in quality of
pouch.(transformation, discoloration) by pressure- heat sterilisation
under high temperature.
2. Barrier performance No deterioration in the quality of content
by moisture, oxygen, ultraviolet, light, etc.
3. Aroma preservation.
4. Bag fall resistance, pin-hole resistance.
5. High seal strength.
6. Automatic filling property.
7. Hygienic Material for retort pouch should be approved by public
institution.
