UK’s general education program is
required of all undergraduate
degree‐seeking students to
graduate. We call it:
Students who complete the UK Core
Program will demonstrate the following
student learning outcomes:
1. An understanding of and ability to
employ the processes of intellectual
inquiry;
2. Competent written, oral and visual
communication skills both as
producers and consumers of
information;
3. An understanding of an ability to
employ methods of quantitative
reasoning;
4. An understanding of the
complexities of citizenship and the
process for making informed
choices as engaged citizens in a
diverse, multilingual world.

State of the Core
Currently in the second academic year of program implementation.
Broad faculty involvement across all colleges serving undergraduates has
been critical to its success.
Composed of the equivalent of 30 credit hours in 10 course areas that
address the four student learning outcomes.
All courses each semester require students to upload an assignment for
assessment purposes via their course in the MyUK portal
Templates for designing a UK Core course in one of the 10 course areas
and rubrics specific to the four student learning outcomes are available on
the UK Core website
Instructors are supported by the staff of the Center for the Enhancement
of Learning & Teaching (www.uky.edu/CELT) and the UK Faculty Toolkit
