We believe that R&D activities are key to strengthening the
sustainable development of UPES and benefit the society and
our profession at large.
R&D is also developing its alliances and collaborative
partnerships with various national/international organizations,
industries, government bodies and other research institutions to
ensure the involvement in a variety of areas, ranging from
fundamental to applicable research. This along with academic
rigor and the cultural pursuits at UPES helps in the inclusive
development of the students.
I, must, reiterate that as an organization we must match the
excellence of publications in terms of indexing, originality and
reproducibility. It is extremely important for the researchers to
maintain and preserve the quality of research. We are cultivating
facilities and awareness derives to improve the research culture
in the university. It is obligatory for every researcher to educate
himself/herself and the students on the ethical approach to
research and avoid any intentional and unintentional breach of
copyrights.
I am confident that the research portfolio at UPES will develop
further in the coming years enabling us to reach greater heights
and acquire laurels from different stakeholders.
With Best Wishes
Dr. S J Chopra, Chancellor

2. Distinguished Lectures of Padma Vibhushan Professor Jayant
Vishnu Narlikar and Dr. (Mrs.) Mangala Narlikar – 4th and 5th of
September 2015
2/16
Padma Vibhushan Professor Jayant Vishnu
Narlikar and Dr. (Mrs.) Mangala Narlikar
visited UPES on the occasion of Teacher’s day
for delivering two distinguished lectures to
the faculty members, college students and
school students (IX and X grades) from
Shemford, Cambridge and Asian Schools.
The Teacher’s day was celebrated with an intriguing lecture session by Prof. Narlikar on the
state-of-the-art facilities being developed for finding out extra-terrestrial life. His talk was
focused on the various technologies being employed to discover extra-terrestrial existence
and the issues related to the time taken for communication owing to the distance between
galaxies. He also spoke of the Indian missions to find out extra-terrestrial existence using
cryo-pumps to extract air in the 41KM range from the earth’s surface which could be a
possible repository of micro-organisms left by the tail end of comets traveling close to the
earth. The audience were astonished by the discoveries of many bacteria’s from these
missions. Many faculty and student members posed their questions and got them answered
by Prof. Narlikar.
This session was followed by the honorship to Prof. Narlikar and Dr. (Mrs.) for their
invaluable contribution to the world of science and mathematics respectively
commemorated by Dr. S J Chopra and Dr. Shrihari.
R&D Newsletter Volume 3 Issue 1 November 2015 Edition
The first lecture was delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Mangala Narlikar on the 4th of September to the
school students and it was well received by the majority. The lecture was an interactive one
with puzzles being put forward by Dr. (Mrs.) Narlikar and solutions being given from the
student’s side. A few students also came up with their own puzzles and got their solutions
from her. The session was encouraging and motivational to the students as it was purely on
the various riddles that math as such puts in our lives.

Distinguished Lecture of Padma Bhushan Professor Dr. Kharag
Singh Valdiya – 14th October 2015
Padma Bhushan Professor Dr. Kharag Singh Valdiya visited UPES during 14th to 15th of
October, 2015 for delivering a distinguished lecture and to spearhead a field visit for the
faculty members and students of the Petroleum Engineering and Earth Science Department
of the university. The distinguished lecture on the topic ‘Evolution of Himalaya and
Earthquakes’ was profusely appreciated by the faculty and students of the university. His
talk was focused on the fundamental studies and research on the Himalayas. His talk served
as a template and a guide for the researchers and students in need of an in-depth
understanding of the Himalayas. He explained how to interpret the structural architecture of
the entire Himalayas and what are the root causes of frequent earthquakes in the northern
part of India. His talk also covered the findings of various fault lines in the Hindu-Kush region
and as to how earthquakes are triggered by natural and man-made causes. The faculty and
students put forward their intriguing questions and got them answered by Dr. K S Valdiya.
The field visit was organized by the Petroleum Engineering Department with five faculty
members and 52 students attending the learning session. Dr. K S Valdiya had agreed to do a
field visit with our studnets nearly after 30 years since his last field visit. The places covered
include a valley in the lower Dehradun belt where the history of the place was discussed
and major findings on the river type, soil type and erosion characteristics were studied. This
was followed by a short trip to Mohand and a hillock in Biharighad.
The possible reasoning and findings behind the presence of an unusual hillock in in the
plains of Biharighad was explained by Dr. Validya to the students. All the short sessions of
the field trip were very informative and inspirational to students who had dreams of
becoming future geologists. The in-depth analysis provided by Dr. Validiya himself proved
very enriching to the faculty and the entire field trip was the limelight of his visit to UPES.

Agro Supply Chain Conference on ‘Cold Chain logistics in
Agriculture’ [Centre for Infrastructure and Project Finance]
– 3rd October 2015
Dr. Chandra S Lalwani, Emeritus Professor of University of Hull, UK was the key note speaker
for the conference. In his presentation on “Sustainable Global Logistics and International
transport” he explained that how logistics of the country can be made more efficient and
responsive with the implementation of proper infrastructure and Government support so as
to make it capable to meet the rising market demand, both inside the nation and
internationally.
Shri. Rajesh Chandra Shrivastava gave the presentation on “Zero Energy for cold chamber”,
in which he explained that problem of power unavailability which is negatively affecting the
cold chain logistics. Shri C.P Mohan, CGM, NABARD spoke about the role of NABARD in
value chain ecosystems. After this, Mr. Alok Bhatnagar through his presentation on
“Opportunities and Challenges in setting up an Agro cold chain” explained the constraints
that are slowing down the development of efficient Agro cold chain in the country.
Dr. B.S Negi, Director, Horticulture Mission shared his views on Status and Prospects of Food
Processing Industry and Agro- process Technological Challenges in Uttarakhand. He said
that there exist various challenges to implement technology in the food processing and
logistics sector like proximity to remote locations, power availability and also financial
constraints at times. Even the availability of crop in bulk, good enough to make full truck
load or construct a cold storage nearby to production site is a major issue which means that
this sector requires heavy incentives and Government support.
Financial perspective of the problem associated with poor logistics infrastructure in cold
chain was discussed with the need of government support, in the form of subsidies,
incentives and services. Shortcomings of the infrastructure and transportation like lack of
warehouses, transportation facilities, cold storages, improper roads and unmechanized
farming practices were the major bottleneck areas that were identified and highlighted in
the conference. Need for Green initiatives, eco-friendly practices, innovation in packaging
and storing products were discussed in the conference.
The best paper awards were presented to Mr. Inderjit Singh-H.P University, Ms. Gangita
Gairola-AT India, Dr. Debjeet Sharma-Doon PG and Mr. Nilesh Ashok Jadhav-UPES.
