The document discusses conventions and story ideas for a teenage drama film. It describes common conventions like high school, relationships, and confronting stereotypes. Two potential storylines are presented: 1) A girl dreams of running away with another girl and tries to change their fate. 2) Two girls meet and fall in love while traveling, but one dies. The second idea is chosen for the film. An opening sequence is described where the main character dreams of traveling with another girl, but sees a disturbing last scene involving blood. She wakes up alarmed and meets the girl from her dream.
2. Teenage drama
conventions
Codes and conventions of the teen film genre are different based
on the film idea, but the most common conventions can include
alcohol, drugs, high school, parties, bullying, love interests,
relationships.
Usually in teenage drama the protagonist confronts the
stereotypical group of people, such as "popular girls" in "Mean
Girls", "bully" or confronts the older generation.
These films are often set in or around high schools with main
protagonist being:
A new kid
The Loner
The Nerd
Drama tends to have plot twists, or scenes where protagonists
survives all ups & downs.
Often teen drama films are narrated for audience to sympathize
with the main character and for them to know his/her thoughts.
3. Romance drama, road trips conventions
In my final film idea
there are also
elements of
romance drama &
road trips.
Road trips
• In Road Movies, the characters tend to be not accepted by society, outsiders, with
something to either change or accept.
• Road trip movies generally consist of the themes of development of journey,
development of the character as his journey goes further due to
"emotional" events along their way.
Romance drama
• Usually the plot consists obstacle that prevents lovers from being together,
such as disapproval of family, society's disapproval, or death of one of them.
• Often romantic drama films end with lover separating, ether because of
the initial obstacle, or after they overcome everything something bad happens
to one/both of them.
4. Film Storyline ideas
Rina has a dream about running away with some other girl, how they travel
and live together. The last thing she sees is a frightening scene, lots of blood
everywhere. She wakes up and goes to the beach to clear her mind, and
meets Leya. At first she doesn’t relate her dream to reality, but as they travel
together she begins to remember the dream she had the first night they met.
She becomes cautious, to prevent the accident she knows that will happen.
Leya couldn’t understand her reasons, and they draw apart a bit. And when
Leya tries to figure out things with Cara the accident happens, but she
manages to save Leya. In the end she changed to story.
5. Final film idea
From two options from previous slide I chose the second idea, where everything happens in the
dream first and how tries to change the fate, because that way the story will catch more
attention, where audience will wonder what will happen in the end – will story repeat, or some
changes will be.
-when female lead will understand that the dream she had was a leading dream
-will she manage to change their fate in the end
This idea suits better for filming opening sequence, because I can show main protagonists
dream, that actually gives hints about future actions in film, but is also surrounded in mystery.
From the dream audience will understand the genre – romance tragedy, road trip.
6. Final synopsis
Two girls live in a small town, but somehow never knew each other. After their meeting, they
decided to run away together, to get away from narrow minded people in their town and start a
new, full of freedom life. As they travel, they become closer and closer, that leads them to falling
in love with each other. They settle down in a small house, where they lived until one of the
female leads is dying. Rina – 1st female lead – wakes up in horror an goes to the waterfront clear
her mind and meets Leya – the 2nd female lead.
7. Opening sequence storyline ideas
Girl wakes up from her dream, she then walks along the beach and memories
come back, from the meeting till the end.
Conventional sound of "the accident" and fast pace of shots of it, then voiceover
of their dialogue and shots of their journey
Audience sees two characters travelling, these scenes end with conventional sound
of accident. Female lead wakes up, goes to the beach to clear her head and meets
girl from her dream.
8. Final opening
sequence
storyline idea
Rina sees a dream where she travels with some other girl,
they sit in the train together and listen to music half asleep,
buy food in a small market and argue what should they buy,
live in a house together – how Leya cooks and Rina herself
sings, and the last scene she sees – not too clear, but she
knows that something bad happened. All the scenes in the
dream are surrounded by mystery and fog, but the blood she
sees in the last scene is clear, and the pain in her chest is
also. She wakes up in alarm and to clear her mind she
decides to go to the beach, and that’s where she meets her,
Leya. last scene – their eyes met, and Rina starts to walk
closer to her.
I chose the last option of opening sequence idea because it
will be easy for audience to establish the genre, also the end
of the scene created tension that will make the audience
more interested in watching the rest of the story.
