Despite this, AeroVironment has continued to secure contracts for its SUAS in the US market. It
has competed for and successfully won all five US DoD SUAS contract competitions, the first four
as lead contractor and the most recent as a joint winner along with a number of other companies
(Table 5.11). AeroVironment is also successfully marketing its UAS systems to its 24 international
customers as of 2013. As a result, revenues in the UAS market stood at 194.3m or 80.9% of total
sales in 2013 giving AeroVironment a market share of 2.9% (Table 5.9; Figure 5.5).
The US Army will remain AeroVironment’s primary customer for the foreseeable future due to
existing contracts and AeroVironment’s dominance of the US small UAS market. As of April 30
2013 it had delivered 2,358 Raven UAS or 84% of the US Army’s Raven UAS acquisition objective.

8. Expert Opinion
8.1 AeroVironment Inc
AeroVironment is a leading developer and supplier of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The
company has two main business areas. The first is focused on UAS and related technologies and
the second focuses on efficient electric energy systems in the infrastructure market for plug-in
electric vehicles. AeroVironment’s range of small UAS includes: the Raven, Puma AE and Wasp
as well as the Shrike vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). In addition, AeroVironment has
developed the Global Observer “stratospheric satellite” system which is a leading system in the
high-altitude long endurance (HALE) class of UAS and the Switchblade tactical missile system.
Visiongain’s questions were answered by Steve Gitlin, AeroVironment’s Vice President for
Marketing Strategy and Communications. Visiongain thanks him for his contribution.
8.1.1 Leading Supplier of Small UAS Systems
Visiongain: Could you begin by giving an overview of your UAS business?
Steve Gitlin: The UAS business accounted for around 80% of our revenue in fiscal 2013 and it
has accounted for most of the growth we have seen over the past decade. The specific area within
this market that we participate in and lead is the Group 1, or small, portable UAS segment. These
are electric powered aircraft which carry electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) imaging sensors.
Our small UAS can be transported in a back pack or in a case in the back of a vehicle. They are
thrown into the air by hand and fly for anywhere between 40 minutes and nearly 4 hours depending
on the model. They provide immediate information when and where needed to the people who
need that information.
8.1.2 Supplying Mission Services in Addition to UAS Hardware
Visiongain: What services you provide in the small UAS market?
Steve Gitlin: Within our UAS business, the small unmanned aircraft systems for reconnaissance
have served as the primary driver of the business. Around this, we also provide training, repairs
and spare parts services. We also offer what we call mission services. This is where, rather than
just selling our hardware to customers, we provide operators and hardware and then sell to our
customers the information these systems produce.
