The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant
information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development,
grant awards, and School Committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please
read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.

    Dear Colleagues,

This is proving to be an exciting New England winter! As you may recall I do love lots of snow. I don’t love so
much making the decision to hold school or not. I do, however, always make my best effort to make calls that
will keep you and our students safe while minimizing disruptions to school schedule and plans. I try to make
the call as soon as I feel sure. As you can see, it may be the day before or right about when some of you
need to head into Wellesley. In any case, despite best efforts, I may not always make the right call or it may
not be the best for your particular commute or circumstance. Always, always use your best judgment to keep
    yourself safe.

Last Tuesday evening I presented two different lists of potential reductions to close two different budget gap
numbers. A short version of the power point is posted on the website. A summary of potential reductions is
    also provided below.

Preliminary reductions voted January 5 in the amount of $188,445:
           Elem art reduced 50 to 45 mins/week (.9 FTE)
HS fitness requirement reduced 5 to 4 semesters (.8 FTE)
           Funding for library books
Elimination of dedicated private school bus

Potential reductions to the Operating Budget in the amount of $772,346
Change Elem Lib from 45 to 30 mins (1.1 FTE); increase TA from .8 to 1.0
Change HS from 2 Lib to 1 lib and 1 TA
           Eliminate Director of Lib (.5FTE)
MS Athletic Fee, $125 to 150
MS Activity Fee, $125 to 150
HS Athletic Fee, $230 to 250
HS Activity Fee, $100 to $150
           Freeze daily sub rate
           Decrease salary adjustment/turnover

Potential reductions to the Operating Budget in the amount of $1,205,493
           Include list from above
Eliminate federally funded regular ed positions:
                   Elem Math Intervention (.4)
                   Intervention para (1.0)
Eliminate elem section increase (1.0)
       Decrease 1 elem section (1.0)
Reduce elem music to 1/wk @ 45 mins (1.0 FTE)
Reduce fitness to 30 mins @ current model (.4 FTE)
Increase HS Athletic Fee from $250 to 270
Decrease 5 acad labs each from Eng and SS (.4 FTE)
       Eliminate Humanities (.4 FTE)
       Food Service Operational Efficiency
       Decrease expenses
              Teachers As Scholars (50%)
              TEC Collaborative

The gap list of $1,205,493 assumes 0 percent of the Educations Jobs Grant will apply to the Operating
Budget and 100 percent will be applied to the STTI Budget. This is at the suggestion of the Advisory
Committee. I have requested that the School Committee consider a prorated allocation of the federal
Education Jobs Grant since the intention of the grant is to save jobs for the benefit of all students. The gap
list of $772,346 assumes a prorated allocation of the federal Education Jobs Grant according to the ratio of
personnel between the Operating Budget excluding STTI and the STTI Budget. Eighty-two percent of
personnel are covered in the Operating Budget; 82 percent of the Education Jobs Grant is equal to $433,147.
Further consideration of a third gap list of $1,952,698 has been deferred at this time.

School Committee is scheduled to meet at 9 am at Town Hall on Monday, January 24, to vote the two
budgets. School Committee has always voted a budget the first week of January, so this is a late vote for the
Committee. The School Committee is then scheduled to present its budget to the Advisory Committee on
January 26 at 7:30 pm. Each of these is a public meeting.

Next steps include my presentation of potential reductions to the School Committee on January 18. This
presentation should be posted on the website the next day. The School Committee then plans to vote the
FY12 Budgets on January 24, followed by a presentation to the Advisory Committee on January 26. The
Advisory Committee public hearing on the budgets is scheduled for February 9.

Stay warm and safe this weekend.

Superintendent's Bulletin 1-21-11

  • 1. Wellesley Public Schools Superintendent’s 40 Kingsbury Street Bulletin Wellesley, Massachusetts 02481 www.wellesley.k12.ma.us/district/bulletins. Bella T. Wong Bulletin #18 Superintendent of Schools January 21, 2011 The Superintendent’s Bulletin is posted weekly on Fridays on our website. It provides timely, relevant information about meetings, professional development opportunities, curriculum and program development, grant awards, and School Committee news. The bulletin is also the official vehicle for job postings. Please read the bulletin regularly and use it to inform colleagues of meetings and other school news.   Dear Colleagues, This is proving to be an exciting New England winter! As you may recall I do love lots of snow. I don’t love so much making the decision to hold school or not. I do, however, always make my best effort to make calls that will keep you and our students safe while minimizing disruptions to school schedule and plans. I try to make the call as soon as I feel sure. As you can see, it may be the day before or right about when some of you need to head into Wellesley. In any case, despite best efforts, I may not always make the right call or it may not be the best for your particular commute or circumstance. Always, always use your best judgment to keep yourself safe. Last Tuesday evening I presented two different lists of potential reductions to close two different budget gap numbers. A short version of the power point is posted on the website. A summary of potential reductions is also provided below. Preliminary reductions voted January 5 in the amount of $188,445: Elem art reduced 50 to 45 mins/week (.9 FTE) HS fitness requirement reduced 5 to 4 semesters (.8 FTE) Funding for library books Elimination of dedicated private school bus Potential reductions to the Operating Budget in the amount of $772,346 Change Elem Lib from 45 to 30 mins (1.1 FTE); increase TA from .8 to 1.0 Change HS from 2 Lib to 1 lib and 1 TA Eliminate Director of Lib (.5FTE) MS Athletic Fee, $125 to 150 MS Activity Fee, $125 to 150 HS Athletic Fee, $230 to 250 HS Activity Fee, $100 to $150 Freeze daily sub rate Decrease salary adjustment/turnover Potential reductions to the Operating Budget in the amount of $1,205,493 Include list from above Eliminate federally funded regular ed positions: Elem Math Intervention (.4) Intervention para (1.0)
  • 2. Eliminate elem section increase (1.0) Decrease 1 elem section (1.0) Reduce elem music to 1/wk @ 45 mins (1.0 FTE) Reduce fitness to 30 mins @ current model (.4 FTE) Increase HS Athletic Fee from $250 to 270 Decrease 5 acad labs each from Eng and SS (.4 FTE) Eliminate Humanities (.4 FTE) Food Service Operational Efficiency Decrease expenses Teachers As Scholars (50%) TEC Collaborative The gap list of $1,205,493 assumes 0 percent of the Educations Jobs Grant will apply to the Operating Budget and 100 percent will be applied to the STTI Budget. This is at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee. I have requested that the School Committee consider a prorated allocation of the federal Education Jobs Grant since the intention of the grant is to save jobs for the benefit of all students. The gap list of $772,346 assumes a prorated allocation of the federal Education Jobs Grant according to the ratio of personnel between the Operating Budget excluding STTI and the STTI Budget. Eighty-two percent of personnel are covered in the Operating Budget; 82 percent of the Education Jobs Grant is equal to $433,147. Further consideration of a third gap list of $1,952,698 has been deferred at this time. School Committee is scheduled to meet at 9 am at Town Hall on Monday, January 24, to vote the two budgets. School Committee has always voted a budget the first week of January, so this is a late vote for the Committee. The School Committee is then scheduled to present its budget to the Advisory Committee on January 26 at 7:30 pm. Each of these is a public meeting. Next steps include my presentation of potential reductions to the School Committee on January 18. This presentation should be posted on the website the next day. The School Committee then plans to vote the FY12 Budgets on January 24, followed by a presentation to the Advisory Committee on January 26. The Advisory Committee public hearing on the budgets is scheduled for February 9. Stay warm and safe this weekend.
