PART A: PORTFOLIO
Using neat freehand sketches you are required to design a concept rural dwelling for an average
sized family. The building design must include as follows:
Adherence to current building regulations.
Assessing site potential/layout, dwelling orientation and use of natural on-site resources.
Substructure:
o Foundation Detail
Superstructure:
o Concrete cavity or timber frame building system with principles for thermal mass.
o Internal layout to promote solar gain and comfort as well as healthy and sociable
living.
o Glazing System
o Outline for:
~ Mechanical and electrical services, renewables where appropriate i.e.
evacuated solar heating tubes, MVHR, etc…
~ Bio-cycle wastewater treatment system
~ Rainwater harvesting/grey water treatment
An aspect of Irish built heritage etc…
The overall development of the site/dwelling must be presented in a 10 page portfolio that
outlines principles for building design in terms of low economic, social and environmental
impact.
