About Bengaluru City
Commonly known as Bangalore is the capital of the South Indian state of Karnataka.
It has a population of about 8.42 million and a metropolitan population of about 8.52
million, making it the third most populous city and fifth most populous urban
agglomeration in India. Located in southern India on the Deccan Plateau, at a height
of over 900 m (3,000 ft.) above sea level, Bangalore is known for its pleasant climate
throughout the year.
Bengaluru led to an increase in the vehicular population to about 1.5 million, with an
annual growth rate of 7%-10%.

Bengaluru urban district, with 10 regional transport offices, continued to lead in the number of
vehicles at 76.2 lakh.
Going by the annual vehicle growth rate of 8-10%, the number would have crossed 2 crores
by september-end of the 1.99 crore vehicles.
Two wheelers constitute more than 70% of the total volume, while cars comprise 15%, autos
4% and the remaining 8% includes other vehicles such as buses, vans and tempos.
4. The problems
Growth of traffic
Private car usage increased.
Poor public transportation system.
Leads to oil crises.
Poor traffic management.
Where is road space ?
Urbanization
Growth of towns
Rising mobility
The increases in population, migration, uncontrolled urban expansion, income, economic
growth, energy consumption and mobility have created a serious for air pollution problems, in
cities throughout the world.

Solution 1
Reduce traffic population
Replace private transport with public transport.
This is THE BIGGEST solution, and the only one that will work in the long term.
The mode of public transport that is cheapest, and can be implemented in the shortest
time, is the bus.
12. 同济大学交通运输工程学院 COLLEGE OF TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING, TONGJI UNIVERSITY
The logic
During rush hour (when people are
commuting to or from work),
Each bike carries 1 person
Each car carries 1 person
Each bus carries 75 people
There are 150 vehicles on this flyover.
These are carrying 150 people during rush
hour.
13. 同济大学交通运输工程学院 COLLEGE OF TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING, TONGJI UNIVERSITY
There are 75 vehicles between each
pair of red lines, carrying 75 people
(because there is only 1 person in each
car or bike)
14. 同济大学交通运输工程学院 COLLEGE OF TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING, TONGJI UNIVERSITY
If we get each group of 75 people
out of their private vehicles and into
buses,
This is what happens.
15. Congestion Congestion ?
Road space used by a person in a bus is:
3 % of that in a car
5 % of that on a 2-wheeler
16. The logic already works in Bangalore
Beautifully
Proportionately
32 Lakh people in private vehicles occupy
this much road space
38 Lakh people in 5000 buses occupy this
much road space (0.5 %)
BMTC has 5000 buses, carries 38 Lakh people every day.
0.2 % of vehicle population carries 50 % of the human population.

The economics
Cost of
Improved bus system with 7000 more buses : Rs. 2000 Cr.
Expenditure on mix of various classes of buses + improved shelters, signage, etc.
- Ordinary bus costs Rs. 12 Lakh, Suvarna (air suspension, no AC) : Rs. 16 Lakh
- Marco Polo : Rs. 55 Lakh
Can be done in 1-2 years.
Road widening for planned 400 km. : Rs. 4000 Cr.
Metro 33 km. to carry 5 % of Bangalore's population : Rs. 7000 Cr.
Metro 350 km. for whole of Bangalore : Rs. 100,000 Cr.
Assumes underground, at Rs. 300 Cr. Per km.
Will take 50-60 years to build.
London has 400 km. with 270 stations. Its size and population are same as Bangalore's.
18. Solution 2
Improve traffic speed
Congestion is mainly caused by intersections. In
this picture, note the congestion at the
intersection and the sparse traffic at the back.
Coordinated signals
Can increase traffic speed by 10 - 25 % on arterial roads.
Underpasses
Eliminate traffic intersections and signals and can increase traffic speed by 25 -50 %.
No parking on roads
Parking occupies 25 % of the space on most roads. Basement parking in buildings
(required by law) is misused for commercial purposes, due to lax law enforcement.
Road surface quality
Makes a big difference to traffic speed.
A vehicles's speed drops to 5 kmph. when approaching a pothole or a rough surface.
19. The main solutions to reduce the pollution and traffic.
1. To identify the number of different types of vehicles in Bangalore city which are causing
pollution.
2. To identify the types of pollutants released from vehicles in Bangalore city.
3. To calculate the total emission released from the transportation system in Bangalore.
4. Effects of the vehicular emission on human health, animals, construction, environment and
future
5. To forecast and suggestion for controlling measures of air pollution in Bangalore.
6. To work with KSPCB to improve the ambient air quality of Bangalore city and to
understand pollution pattern in different places of the city due to traffic flow.
20. Option 1 Option 2
Keep widening roads and destroying Bangalore
+
Wait for metro for 100 years, cost Rs 1lakh cr.
Move to sustainable transport
increase public transport reduce, pravite vehicles.
Public transport =mass transport + taxis+ auto
+
Increase non-motorized transport (NMT)
cycling and walking
This is the only solution that will work in the long term
21. Personal comment
1. Remote sensing technology can be used to measure the pollutant level from vehicle's exhaust while
vehicle are in motion.
2. Modification engine: As per Motor Vehicle Act all vehicle manufacturers have to conform latest Bharath
standards.
3. Avoiding unnecessary driving to reduce vehicle emissions
4. No Vehicle day
5. Celebration of Bus Day:
6. Car Pooling:
7. Emission test by RTO:
8. Ban of vehicles more than 15 years of age: The rapid growth of population and motor vehicles in
multiple ratios is the main concern. City has manifold its effects from last 20 years on all types of
pollution,
22. Result
A green Bangalore, with clean air, improved mobility, more
money spent on healthcare, water, power and education.
