• The United States is currently rank 17th in reading (from 14th
in 2009), 26th in math (from 25th in 2009), and 21st in science
(from 17th in 2009) (OECD PISA, 2009, 2012)
• The 2007, 2011 TIMSS report showed the average science
scores for eighth grade students in the United States were
520 and 525 respectively; there was no measurable difference
between the science scores.
• The 2011 NAEP “The Nation’s Report Card”, which provided
the national science tests found 44% of fourth graders and
56% of eighth graders scored “below basic” on the most
recent tests, meaning they have almost no familiarity with
scientific concepts and knowledge of the rudiments of
physical, life, earth, and space science.
