Cameroon’s Reunification
Monument
Short statement or caption.
Located at the center of Africa, Cameroon is known as “little Africa” or “Africa in Miniature”
thanks to its rich cultural and geographical diversity. Culturally, the country is a complex mix
of roughly 250 indigenous populations from all over Africa with an equal amount of languages
and customs. Geographically, all major landscapes in Africa are present in Cameroon, including
coastline, mountains, grass plains, forest, rainforest and desert.

The Cameroonian art is characterized by a great diversity of style related to its history and
geography (diversity of ethnicities, languages, religions ...). This cultural diversity allows the
development of creativity across all media in contemporary art (visual arts, painting,
sculpture, photography ...) and inspired by the traditional art. Artistic events, exhibition
spaces and art galleries are developing gradually in Cameroon.
Sculpture
Cameroon's painting is much inspired by traditions coupled to contemporary urban realities.
The techniques and materials are varied: traditional painting, installations with video
projections, painting made of recycled materials etc…

Monuments
Cameroon’s has a varied landscape including volcanoes, beaches, savannahs, rainforests and
rocky mountain ranges. To this, must be coupled its rich fauna and flora : 409 species of
mammals, 165 species of birds, and over 8,200 species of plants. Thus, if you wish for a taste of
Africa in a one stop journey, Cameroon offers just that.
Landscape
Cameroonian literature draws its source from a rich oral tradition which has known a strong
development. Early literature started with works such as Die Jaunde-text, a book in German
and ewondo (local language) published in 1913 by Charles Atangana and his nephew Paul Messi
or Sultan Njoya Sa'angan published in Shu-mom, commonly known Bamum script They were
followed in 1932 by Nnango kon, a boulou language fictional text written by a certain Jean-
Louis Njemba-Medou.
Currently the Cameroonian literature is essentially made of novel, poetry, essays and plays.
Literature
Since ancient times, the Cameroonian traditional music has been a way to commemorate facts
and events that mark daily lives. It is rich in sound and color, and involves various forms of
percussion instruments such as drums.
Traditional music is inseparable from dances that accompany it. The main types are: Makossa
(coast community, SAWA); Bikutsi (Center community, BETI), Benskin (West Community,
BAMILEKE); Assiko (Littoral Community, BASSA)
Music
Sports is highly practiced in Cameroon. Football is certainly the most popular sport in the
country (as in many other countries), but a variety of discipline are practiced as well.
This diversity of disciplines can be seen in the variety of medals obtain by Cameroonian
athletes at Olympic Games including 2 gold medals (Triple jump), 2 medals in boxing and one
gold medal in soccer.
Cameroon’s football team internationally know as Indomitable Lions is a major squad on the
continent with 4 African Nation Cups and frequent qualification to the World Cup. Many
players such as Samuel Eto’o – who played for Barcelona - or Roger Milla are well known by
football fans.
The organization of national competitions such as the Cycling Tour of Cameroon or Mount
Cameroon race of hope and tournaments (Afrobasket Women 2015 Women ANC 2016 and CAN
2019) complements this overview of sport in Cameroon.

Christianity and Islam are the two main religions in Cameroon. Christian churches and Muslim
centers of various denominations operate freely throughout Cameroon. Approximately 70
percent of the population is at least nominally Christian, 20 percent is nominally Muslim and 6
percent practice traditional indigenous religious beliefs, i.e., Animism. The Christian
population is divided between Roman Catholics (38.4 percent of the total population),
Protestants (26.3 percent), and other Christian denominations (including Jehovah's
Witnesses) (4 percent). There is significant internal migration. Large cities have significant
populations of both groups, with churches and mosques often located near each other and
cohabitating in peace.
