Free browser-type interface. Has been around since 2003 unlike some that have recently come on the market. Currently there are more than 150 academic institutions from roughly 14 countries in SL. The original 64 acres has grown to over 65,000 acres. Educators have started to come into SL to collaborate. At a 2007 educational conference 1,300 unique avatars attended, and the Linden email educational listserv has over 2,000 active subscribers. --------- When attending a class or training session in person isn't possible, practical, or desirable, immersive education provides educators and students with the ability to connect and communicate in a way that greatly enhances the learning experience, because it simulates BEING THERE . Immersive education allows individuals to experience things they cannot easily experience in real life. Those in wheelchairs can decide if they want to ride or walk or even fly or dance. Fear of heights? Lose them in SL. Public speaking phobic? Let your avatar address the group. No land to build your dream home in real life? Rent some in SL and build your vision of the perfect classroom or home.
