Supporting users’ training and thus improving their working productivity by increasing their search performance is crucial in every day’s work-life. This holds true not only for knowledge workers like auditors, who needs to stay-up-to-date with law and new compliance regulations, but also for production workers who need to improve their IT skills in order to keep pace with new technologies established within the ongoing digitalisation in Industry 4.0. In both settings, there is a substantial need for workers to find work-related relevant information at the right time. To achieve this, especially production workers with low IT literacy as well as auditors, who need to keep track on the continuous change of laws and rules, need informal learning opportunities on how to improve their search capabilities during their daily work. In this work, we present a first design concept of an adaptive and reflective training support widget. The widget aims at supporting workers to train new search functionalities in order to enhance their search productivity during work.

• Digitalisation in industry results in far-reaching changes in working
environments
• Product and learninc cycles become shorter
• The flood of information grows steadily
• Personalized and context-dependend information delivery needed
• Challenge:
• Find and provide work-related relevant information a the right time
• Change routinised search behaviour to become aware of
• new search functionalities
• new information sources
• Goal: Increase search performance to improve work productivity by
• raising awareness of past search behaviour
• providing smart indicators for social comparsion
• use reflective prompts

How did you perceive the
Feature 1 for your search?
My answer …
Presents the last five used
Moving features for each.
Goals:
• Make aware of current
feature usage
• Reflect on search behaviour
• Increase search performance
Challenges:

MOVING Feature Usage
How did you perceive the
Feature 1 for your search?
My answer …
Social comparison aims at
improving search performance by
raising user’s intrinsic motivation
Goals:
• Make aware of the own
behaviour e.g. number of clicks
to desired results used in
comparison with others
• Motivate the user to change.
Challenges:
• Whom to compare with?
• What information is useful for
comparison
• Good timing for reflection?

How did you perceive the
Feature 1 for your search?
My answer …
Presents a reflective prompt in form of
a reflective question or sentence
starter the stimulate reflection
on the search behaviour.
Goals:
• Motivate to reflect on past feature
usage (reflection amplifier)
• Motivate to use another feature
(reflection intervention)
Challenges:
• When to present which type of
prompt?

Discussion & Challenges
• Which performance indicators should be presented?
• For individuals, teams, departments?
• In which situations should the PI be presented?
• Which type of prompts should be presented?
• When should a prompt be presented?
• At a predefined point in time e.g. at the end of a day or week?
• How should prompts be presented?
• E.g. Push notifications or Silent notifications (some color change, blinking
symbol)
