Engineering admitted their
first students.

3. 1991
The AIT Honorary Degree of
Doctor of Technology was
awarded to the United
Kingdom’s Prince Philip, Duke
of Edinburgh.

4. 1991
HRH Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn
presided over the
inauguration of the
Computer Science
Building.

5. 1992
The Institute presented the Gold Medal Award to Her Majesty
Queen Sirikit of Thailand in recognition of Her Majesty’s
outstanding leadership in environmental protection and the
conservation of natural resources.

6. 1993
The Swiss-AIT-
Vietnam
Management
Development
Program in Ho Chi
Minh City was
opened.

7. 1993
The Institute
received a large
grant from private
donors in the form
of the new
Chalerm Prakiat
Building.

8. 1994
AIT Center Vietnam
was inaugurated,
becoming the first
international institute
of higher learning to
operate in the
country. AITCV
launched a diploma
program in Industrial
Systems
Engineering.

9. 1995
AIT received the
Asian Management
Award for
Development
Management from
the Asian Institute
of Management in
Manila, for its
contributions to
human resources
development and
sustainable
development in the
region.

10. 1995
New programs
were introduced in
bioprocess
technology and
infrastructure
planning and
management.

11. 1996
The Mechatronics
field of study was
established.

12. 1996
A partnership established the joint Chulabhorn
Research Institute / AIT program in Environmental
Toxicology,Technology and Management.

13. 1997
AIT received a citation
from the Danube Adria
Association for
Automation and
Manufacturing
International Vienna,
for its contributions to
the technical sciences
and to international
scientific cooperation.

14. 1997
HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn
presided over the inauguration of the Asian
Center for Research on Remote Sensing.

15. 1998
The Advance Agro
Pulp and Paper
Technology Building
was inaugurated.

16. 1998
The Distributed
Education Center
was established.

17. 1999
HRH Princess
Maha Chakri
Sirindhorn presided
over the
inauguration of the
Geoinformatics
Center.

18. 1999
AIT celebrated its 40th
Anniversary with annual
enrolment averaging 1,349
students and the alumni
body consisting of some
9,828 members from 57
countries.

19. 2000
H.E. Dr. Leonel Fernandez,
President of the Dominican
Republic, visited AIT. He was
welcomed by Prof. Jean-Louis
Armand and H.E. Dr. Arthit
Ourairat, Minister of Science,
Technology and Environment
of Thailand.

ASIAWEEK ranked
the School of
Management
(SOM) as No. 3 in
Asia for Best
Executive MBA and
No. 4 for Best Full-
Time Program.

AIT conferred the
Honorary Degree of
Doctor of Philosophy
on H.E. Dr.
Abdurrahman Wahid,
President of the
Republic of Indonesia.
