16. Skills Academia asks from you
Be proactive (when e.g. you go to your supervisor meeting)
Presentation skills, comfort and pleasure at communicating both
orally and in writing
Good record keeping (your memory skills welcome, but memory is
finite!)
17. Academia perks
Be your own manager - both content and admin wise -- nobody
checks your 9-to-5 schedule -- schedule is goal and project based,
micro management is rare
Interactions with other academic disciplines
Working with postdocs, professors, other PhDs -- amazed by how
much you can learn from people
TRAVEL
comfort and pleasure at communicating both orally and in writing
Learn to be critic about your OWN WORK (might as well be the title of this slide)
Important with supervisors and peers
Problem -> bring possible solutions, not just the problem
Supervision meeting -> come with your own agenda, THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT
You’ve got to have this thing you can’t stop amazing ideas blooming out of your head.
BUT YOU’LL LOOSE THEM
YOU NEED TO LOVE WHAT YOU DO
comfort and pleasure at communicating both orally and in writing
Learn to say NO
Don’t’ forget to sport
Eat well, sleep well
