La salud, por tanto, se presenta como un fenómeno de creciente importancia y repercusión socio-cultural. En este sentido, la conciencia pública sobre aspectos de salud y el papel de las actividades físicas al servicio de la misma puede constituir un fuerte impulso a los docentes que orienten la Educación Física en el currículum bajo una perspectiva de fomento de la salud (Smith, 1984; Arnold, 1985; Breslow, 1987; Caldecott, 1989; Sallis y McKenzie, 1991; Fox, 1993; Delgado y cols., 1997). La escuela está servicio de la sociedad y debe responder a las inquietudes de la misma. Si la salud es motivo de preocupación social, la escuela deberá atenderla. Se crea de esta forma un círculo dentro del ámbito educativo que transmite valores y actitudes saludables de gran repercusión e interés a la sociedad, a la vez que dota de recursos de intervención que alimentan las necesidades de una sociedad interesada por las cuestiones de la salud.
El paseo junto con la gimnasia de mantenimiento, con el propósito de mantener o mejorar la forma física, se ofrece a un amplio colectivo de población, como una alternativa a las prácticas deportivas tradicionales.
