What is resources ?
All the useful elements of environment which satisfy
human needs are called resources . Resources such as
soil , rocks and minerals are valuable for man kind
The food we eat
 The trees which gives us shelter
 The land where we live
the wood we use to make furniture
 the water we use
Time and technology are 2 important factors that can
change substances into resources.
Resources are generally classified into :

Natural resources occur naturally
within environments that exist relatively undisturbed by
mankind, in a natural form. A natural resource is often
characterized by amounts
of biodiversity and geodiversity existent in
various ecosystems.
Natural resources are derived from the environment. Some
of them are essential for our survival while most are used
for satisfying our wants. Natural resources may be further
classified in different ways.
Natural resources are materials and components
(something that can be used) that can be found
within the environment. Every man-made product is
composed of natural resources (at its fundamental
level). A natural resource may exist as a separate
entity such as fresh water, and air, as well as a living
organism such as a fish, or it may exist in an
alternate form which must be processed to obtain the
resource such as metal ores, oil, and most forms of
energy
Classification of Natural Resources:
Level of development(Uses)
Origin
Stock
Distribution
Actual Resources
Potential Resources
Actual resources are those resources who’s quantity is
known. These Resources are being used in the present.
Examples
Rich deposit of coal in Germany
Petroleum in west Asia
Dark soil of the Deccan plateau in Maharashtra
Potential Resources are those who’s entire quantity may not be
known and these are not being used at present. These recourse
could be used in the future. The level of technology we have at
present may not be advanced enough too easily utilized these
resources
Examples
 uranium in ladakh

High speed winds
Abiotic
Biotic
In ecology and biology, abiotic components (also known as
abiotic factors) are non-living chemical and physical factors in
the environment which affect ecosystems. Abiotic phenomena
underlie all of biology.
Examples
 soil

Rocks
water
Biotic components' are the living things that shape
an ecosystem. A 'biotic factor' is any living component that
affects another organism, including animals that consume the
organism in question, and the living food that the organism
consumes.
Examples

Plants
Animals
Humans
Renewable
Non renewable
A renewable resource is a natural resource with the ability to
reproduce through biological or natural processes and
replenished with the passage of time. Renewable resources are
part of our natural environment and form our eco-system.
Examples

Solar energy
Wind energy
A non-renewable resource is a natural resource which cannot
be reproduced, grown, generated, or used on a scale which
can sustain its consumption rate, once depleted there is no
more available for future needs.
Examples

Coal
Natural gas
Ubiquitous
localized
Resources that are found everywhere.
Examples

Air we breath
Water we drink
Resources which are found only in certain places.
Examples

Copper
iron
Human-made resources also often referred to as "capital"
includes all the man-made things that help grow an economy:
money, factories, roads, etc.Sometimes natural substances
become resources only when their origin form has been
changed.
Examples

 Buildings
 Bridges
People can make the best use of nature to create more resources
when they have the knowledge, skill and technology to do so.
That is why human biengs are a special resource. People are
human resources. Education and health help in making people
a valuable resource.
