For a long time, there was a belief that situations that arose within the family were solely a private
matter. Women were treated as possessions of men and the law did not legally recognise the rape of
a wife by her husband. In recent times, society's attitudes towards domestic violence have changed

It is difficult for a person to understand the feeling of not having any control over his or her body,
until he or she has experienced domestic violence. When I came to realize that I had no say over
my body, and the only thing left to soar free was my soul, I learned that it was a cruel world out

went to counseling sessions that my close friend set up for me. The counselor helped me realize

Stress in a relationship can lead to abuse. The bread winner in the family may feel stressed that he
/she is unable to provide for the family. He may take this guilt and stress out on the spouse or the
child in the form of yelling or hitting. This is the reason that the rate of abuse is higher during the

Right now, right at this very instant, a silent war all across the nation is being waged. A violation of
humanity, a crime that is least prosecuted, and a great threat endangering the lives of thousands of
women and children daily. Of course, I am talking about harsh reality of domestic violence. We live
in a time where domestic violence is kept a taboo subject, a shameful secret that shouldn't be let out.
We know it's happening, and even hear or see the events. But who's taking action?
I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic?
Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we're shocked at first
but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the
struggle, and a step to save our nation.
And yes, I'm not anyone special, I don't study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence
myself. But I'm here to tell a story. I'm here to make a change. And I'm here to encourage all of you
to do the same.
I'm going to share an experience I had. Something that I've regretted and hated myself for since,
knowing that help could've been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a family
member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened but she
just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the bruises
became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go–lucky girl I
knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you, sometimes the people
who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. And this was exactly the case. Flashforward a few
months, and her partner was being trialled and charged under the case of domestic abuse.
Although there were so many signs, my ignorance restrained me from helping her help herself.
Needless to say, I was absolutely disgusted. And to this day, I still can't even begin the fathom how
anyone could possibly put their hands on someone they loved. To purposely harm their significant

three emergency safe shelter facilities enables victims and their children the opportunity to seek
immediate refuge.
The top two reasons why a woman or man would seek shelter from domestic violence are: 1.) They
are in a lethal situation facing imminent danger and/or 2.) They are facing homelessness due to
domestic violence. 650 clients stayed in ACT's emergency safe shelters in 2015 (nearly half were
children).
Like all stories of healing, communication was such a vital part to a survivor's success story. Victims
of domestic violence or those interested in learning more about available resources can reach ACT to

running disputes. Acid throwing, particularly on the face, may be committed to avenge refusal of
sexual advances and alleged disloyalty by a wife or female partner. It is done to punish the wife for
bringing dishonor to the husband.
Marriage( Nikaah) to Koran( The holy Book of Muslims) is an old custom where a girl is forced
into celibacy to keep the family wealth intact. It is more prevalent in the Sindh province among the
wealthy feudal lords ( waderas).

problem today as domestic violence can affect everyone regardless of age, gender, marital status,
economic status, race, religion, or geographical location. It affects society as a whole. There is no
