ENG 225 Week 5 Film Critique Final Paper
Focus of the Final Film Critique
Throughout this course, you have been compiling a blog and writing essays that analyze various
elements of film such as theme, cinematic techniques, and genre. It is now time to combine those
elements into a comprehensive analysis of one movie.
You will be completing this assignment in two stages: for the first stage (1500 to 1800 words), you
will analyze an entire movie; in the second stage (300 to 600 words), you will reflect on how you
analyzed the movie as well as how your ability...show more content...
How did society affect this film (i.e., what currents in society led to the creation of the film)?
If you are unable to find any information about the social impact of the film, explain the personal
impact it has had on you.
Note: Not every bullet point under the four listed components will necessarily apply to your movie.
However, you will still need to discuss each of the four main components thoroughly, which means
that you may need to explain a concept even if it can‟t be directly applied to your movie.
Your paper should be organized around a thesis statement that clarifies what you will attempt to
accomplish in your paper, and how you will proceed. Additionally, you must conclude with a
restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph.
Stage 2: Reflection
After completing your movie analysis, you will reflect on the analysis process and how you have
learned to more thoroughly analyze film as well as how rigorous study of film enhances your
development as a student and thinker. In this 300– to 600–word reflection, review your initial post
from the "Post Your Introduction" discussion in Week One, and consider how your ability to
analyze movies has changed or grown. Append your reflection to the analysis portion of your paper.
Your reflection should be personal and exploratory in

Final Film Critique: Crash (2004) Jay Dennis ENG 225 Introduction to Film Instructor: Cicely
Young April 13, 2014 Final Film Critique Draft: Crash (2004) There are many different critical
elements and artistic aspects to examine when analyzing and critiquing any film. In 2004 Paul
Haggis wrote and directed the award winning drama Crash about various intertwining experiences
involving racial relations and the socioeconomic status levels of the diverse cast of characters. This
film addresses how humans being deal with real life circumstances and addresses how racial
stereotypes and prejudices impact our society by causing a separation of customs, ignoring human
and civil rights, and demonstrating how racism can cause moral,...show more content...
The songs that were part of the soundtrack of the film are played at moments that were significant
to the scene. A perfect example is when Thandie Newton's character, Christine, is trapped inside
of the wrecked car and the same racist officer that physically violated her the previous evening,
played by Matt Dillon, was trying to rescue her; as the song Flames by Mark Isham played in the
background. This song is an Old Persian folklore song that was written as a ballad, but the mood
and the melody is perfect for the scene as the two characters must trust one another and set aside
their grievances in order to make it out of the situation alive. The superb acting was not the only
visible element that allowed this award winning film to engage the viewer. The film begins with the
out of focus shots of the car headlights which could possibly be setting up the audience to see that
the characters in the film will not be what they seem and may also lack focus throughout the film as
well. The cinematography around the majority of the film is subtle as the director chose to focus
more on close–ups and the raw emotions on the actor's faces and expressions. There are very few
scenes where a lot of action is necessary to carry the movie, but the scenes that do contain action,
such as the attempted carjacking of Terrence Howard's character, Cameron, and the ensuing police

Bioethical Issues: Miss Evers' Boys
Introduction
Miss Ever's Boys is a docudrama film that was produced by the HBO cable network. The movie
explores ethical and social issues involved in the infamous Tuskegee Study. The study was about
untreated black men with syphilis. The U.S. Public Health Service is said to have conducted a
study among 600 black Americans from the years 1932 to 1972. This study was done in Macon
County. This paper will exclusively explore the critique the Miss Ever's Boys film using ethical
frameworks. The ethical framework includes beneficence, justice, and respect for persons,
duty–based ethics, virtue–based ethics, and the right's–based ethics. The paper will identify how the
above listed ethical principles were...show more content...
In the movie, "Miss Ever's Boys", only blacks were included in the study. The study recruited 600
black men and none white person. To start with, this was discrimination of the highest order. This
means that only the black men were at the risk of dying, considering that they treated them with
placebos. This means that only the black men's lives were endangered while the bioethics requires
that the risk to be distributed equally (B. Miss Evers Boys and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, 2013).
Respect for persons means that people have a right to fully exercise their autonomy. Here, people
need to be given a chance to make their own choices. In the film, Miss Ever's Boys, it is clear that
the participants were not respected at all. The first show of disrespect was when the U.S. Public
Health Service decided to conduct a study and lie to the participants that they were going to offer
them cure to syphilis. The second disrespect shown was the discrimination in the study where only
the blacks were selected. Lastly, the U.S. Public Health Service disrespected the participants
knowing that it was dangerous. Therefore, the respect for person ethical principle was not meet in
the movie "Miss Ever's Boys".
Duty–based ethics are based on duty or obligation. Kant argues that there are higher principles that
are good in no matter the time, situation, or culture. Therefore, when faced with

Final Film Critique
Introduction
The movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is based on a character Andy Dufresne. Andy is
a young and successful banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for murdering his wife and her
secret lover. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent
to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20–years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually
earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and
empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit,
determination, courage, and desire....show more content...
In the film's final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and
racism. The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank
Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash
back to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is
done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both
internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I
am innocent, and the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The
film does contain symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his
fate and his last judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being
corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the
hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to
symbolize the warden's salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember
and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. At
the same time he hangs himself his bird (Jake) fly's away and is freed. The metaphor is that the
librarian is free of his lifelong nightmare of being told what

Critique Of The Movie Gasland
Gasland: A Movie Critique The documentary Gasland, directed by Josh Fox provides insight on
the effects of living in a natural gas driven society. The film features Josh Fox's search to discover
how natural gas companies operate and the unseen consequences people have to live with as a
result of corporate greed. Fox becomes curious about the gas industry in 2009 when he receives a
letter from government regulators asking if he will relinquish his property for one hundred thousand
dollars because it is located on the Marcellus shale, commonly known as the middle east of the
United States. He fears that signing his property over will contaminate the Delaware River water
supply. The Pennsylvania EPA informs the public that their water is still clean even though entire
neighborhoods have seen their water fizzle because it is contaminated with natural gases. This
prompts him to go on a journey to see how other communities have been...show more content...
Furthermore, it is subjective because Josh Fox's reasoning behind creating the film was solely
because he experienced the negative outcomes due to fracking in his hometown, and most likely
would not have created this work if it were not for his negative experience. Fox strengthens his
argument by interviewing normal citizens all across the United States. These are accurate and real
instances of how the general public has been taken advantage of by the natural gas industry. By
interviewing regular people, such as the man who loved lighting his water on fire, Fox captures
their personalities allowing the audience to genuinely relate and feel for these people. He also
interviews a man by the name of Westin Wilson, an EPA regulator, and even though he works for the
natural gas industry he believes the industry is unjust and operates

The movie that I chose to critique is Rear Window, a realist film by Alfred Hitchcock produced in
1954. Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly and, Wendell Corey. The genre is thriller and the sub
genre is suspense infused with mystery. Rear Window is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most inspired
audience participation films. When a person watches it, he feels, tantalized, shocked, and
exhilarated. Further in this essay, I will summarize the plots, discuss the styles used, and deconstruct
parts of the film.

Alfred Hitchcock, the director points it out to the audience as he concentrates on Jeff focusing on
what's happening inside his neighborhood. He allows the audience to stay focused as we become
voyeurs and see the various dramas that are being unfolded. Hitchcock has great technical
brilliance with a great ability to portray a story in a very distinctive manner. He uses the technique
of dramatic variation of size to achieve other desired emotions from the audience, by cutting from
long shots to extreme close ups. The story line in the film revolves around voyeurism, guilt,
friendship, and sexuality. Moreover, the editing techniques in the film are used to raise attention to
the events that are unfolding in front of us. The shots in the movie are connected in a relatively
subjective style. According to Hitchcock "Cutting should not be thought of in terms of "cutting"
but rather in terms more like "assembly" or "Mosaic'' (Hitchcok, 1963, p.4). Montage, is the
process or technique of selecting and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous
whole. When two shots are juxtaposed in such a way it gives the third another meaning. This is one
classic examples of Alfred Hitchcock's way of thinking. The use voyeurism in the film makes the
audience conscious of why the protagonist is behaving in a certain

Some people may feel that if a movie wins an academy award that it is a great movie because the
film critics have experience, the film critics are paid professionals, and also that the film critics
decide which movies are nominated for an academy award so the movie must be good.
But this is where many people beg to differ regarding the film critic's reviews on a particular film.
In some cases, if a film critic decides that a movie is good, not every movie goer will feel the same

Although we like some similar and some different types of movies, we like to watch and discuss

I look for many different things when I watch a movie. The Biggest thing I look for is plot. I want
the plot to make sense and to flow well. I hate when movies have a lot of unexplained plot holes, it
makes the movie hard to watch. I think the best movies have well thought out plots. The plot should
make the person watching the movie interested in watching until the end.
Another thing I look for in movies is actors who are good at acting. In my opinion, I believe that a
bad actor can ruin the whole movie. Sometimes it can

impacted an audience and held the test of time as the film Gone with the Wind. I have always
been curious if director, Victor Fleming and producer, David O. Selznick and screenplay writer,
Sidney Howard knew what they were creating a masterpiece and how this film would have such an
enormous impact on audiences for years to come. Interestingly enough there were some who
thought the film should not be made, as Irving Thalberg said to Louis B. Meyer in 1936, "Forget it

The equipment was very cumbersome and color consultants were necessary to ensure accurate
tones and hues as directed by Selznick. (Dunagan, 2001). Selznick was very innovative with the
use of shadows and silhouettes, which he uses in several scenes of the film. Selznick's use of
silhouettes in both the opening scene and the scene prior to intermission are very dramatic as they
arouse emotion on the part of the audience. However, the emotions they evoked are very different.
In the opening scene, the silhouette of Scarlett and her father, Gerald the audience can feel the love
that Gerald has for his daughter as he illuminates his love for the land and how she will understand
as she get older. The audience can almost feel the picturesque beauty of the land before them, as the
sun is setting and Scarlett and Gerald in silhouettes. The second scene where Selznick uses
silhouettes is directly prior to the intermission of the film. However, the emotions here are far
different. Scarlett has journeyed to Tara, from the recently Yankee occupied Atlanta, with Melanie
and her newborn son and Prissy. She has encountered nothing but death and destruction on her
voyage. War beaten Scarlett returns to her home Tara only to find her home, ravaged, her sisters
ailing, her mother dead, her father mad and the plantation lacking food since Tara was used as Yankee

Music Critique of film Score
Action, suspense, love, and drama are all the makings for a great film. None of these key features
to a film could have any substance or feeling without the help of music. Composers play a big role
for setting the tone of the movie, developing characters, moving along or supporting action, and
depicting the time and place the movie is taking place. In the movie Heat, Elliot Goldenthal does just
that. Goldenthal was born in NY in 1954 and studied music under John Corigliano and Aaron
Copeland. His partner is Julie Taymor and he won an Oscar for the movie Frida which Julie
directed. Goldenthal has composed for several films as well as concert halls, theater and dance. He

This distinguishes his character of the hero, from the other two villain characters. At the end of the
movie Robert De Niro's character is trying to escape the country with the girl while Al Pacino's
character is right on his tail. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with
the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using
long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through
a field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in
shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with
strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments
such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal's score was replaced in the final scene
with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water." Director Michael Mann felt that Moby's
music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. At the
same time the music related the two characters. Opposite from the beginning where the music
separated the two, here it connects them demonstrating how they were not that different and had
respect and admiration for each

There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are used
in different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all subjects
both near and far using a deep focus.
As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes
and piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire
film really brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my
opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no
overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I
think that the Tuohy family set an amazing example for others to follow.
This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent
genre for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher,
the first round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Through the film the life and times of
Michael are chronicled from his early childhood upbringing in the aptly named Hurt Village, to the
life he now lives as a professional football player in the NFL. The film also incorporates many
theatrical elements of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre.
This film was very enjoyable to watch and there are many reasons that I would watch

her daughter Gracie, and her abusive husband Mitch. At the beginning of the movie, Slim is
working as a waitress in a diner and meets Mitch after he intervened a conversation between Slim
and another man. At first, Mitch is viewed as a hero because he stood up for Slim when she was
being hit on by a man who made a bet with his friends. Slim soon fell in love with Mitch who

As soon as he realized he didn't have control over her he resorted to being extremely violent. The
Power and Control Diagram can be used to examine the patterns of abuse and violence Mitch uses in
attempt to gain control of Slim and Gracie (Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, 1984). Mitch's
abusive behavior continued to escalate throughout the movie, beginning with controlling behaviors
and quickly intensifying into life threatening abuse. Along with physical violence, Mitch engages in
numerous abusive behaviors and scare tactics to maintain power and control Slim. The Power and
Control Wheel depicts the abusive behaviors commonly used by batters alongside physical and
sexual violence (Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, 1984). During the scene when Slim found out
about the affair, Mitch minimized the issue of him cheating by telling Slim that the other woman
didn't matter, and that she was just there to satisfy his needs. Mitch told Slim he refused to live
without her, but he was going to continue to cheat and she had to allow it. Mitch emotionally abused
Slim by making her feel weak and helpless.
Male privilege is a factor within the Power and Control Wheel which Mitch used to portray his
power and obtain control over Slim. After Slim told Mitch she will not tolerate his affair, he slapped

couldn't decide what movie to watch for my film review and a friend recommended it. I then saw
the large number of awards it received and was nominated for, and I had to watch it. "The
Revenant" is about the survival story of Hugh Glass. Glass was traveling with a group of fur
traders, when he was mauled by a grizzly bear. He barely survives and the members of the group try
to bring him back to the fort. I soon becomes very difficult to carry him through the rocky terrain,
so a group of men volunteer to stay behind and care for him until help arrives or he dies. The men
who stay behind are his son, Bridger, and John Fitzgerald. John Fitzgerald doesn't care about Glass
so he kills his son and then tricks Bridger into leaving Glass behind. Glass must then survive with
his injuries and make it back to get his revenge on Fitzgerald.

Don Francis heads the research of AIDS with little money and little help. This was because AIDS
was considered the "gay man's disease" and there was more emphasis on who discovered the disease
than actually helping those who had it. Basically, the movie was about the government and many
other individuals being ignorant and looking the other way because homosexual males were seen as
a lesser priority and group. As to the question of what long–term effect did prejudice and...show more

I saw this when Dr. Francis asks how many hemophiliacs does the committee need to die before it
becomes cost efficient for them to do something about it. He asks when will it be more profitable
for them to save people then it is to kill them. This showed me that lives are not valued as equal,
especially homosexual one. I just do not know how this becomes to be, particularly by the
government which is not supposed to be prejudice. If the same situation had arisen and effected
anyone other than the gay community, I believe that the situation would have been handled
differently. The movie also showed how individuals put themselves before others, especially those
who should not. In the movie, Dr. Gallo pulls all support from Dr. Francis including re–agents and
antibodies to the virus. Dr. Gallo puts him and his reputation before all the others that had and
could get the virus. To him, the virus was an opportunity to further his name and reputation in the
scientific community. Dr. Gallo chose to play god when he decided to pull the resources from Dr.
Francis. He could have saved countless of others but he wasted precious time to find out more about
the virus and make people aware. As for him, I think no punishment would be too severe in
justification of his actions. Overall, the actions of the government and from individuals like Dr.
Gallo resulted in the gay community to suffer greatly. Not only did AIDS effect them

The Arrival Of The Future
The Arrival of the Future
Is the beginning the end? This is how Denis Villeneuve, director of Arrival, decided to begin the
Oscar nominated film. With nonlinear timeline at the focus of the film, this controversial style
illustrates violence between characters, specifically Louise, shows the tool given to humanity by the
Heptapods, and the relationship of the characters.
Erik Bork, an Emmy and Golden Globe winning author for HBO, states that "Jumping around in time
with flashbacks can be confusing in a script, and can make it hard for a reader to get oriented and
settle into one particular story, in a specific time frame" (Bork, par. 1). He continues to explain, "It's
usually better to just have one, at most, and have the rest of the movie take place in what seems like
continuous present time" (Bork, par. 9). Many critics would agree with Bork, siding with his belief
in the confusing nature of flashbacks.
However, Arrival's use of a nonlinear timeline is vital to the story of the film. the Heptapods give
Louise the ability to see time in a nonlinear fashion. There is no other way the writers of Arrival
could have conveyed her newfound ability. Her ability to perceive future events is evident while
Louise is talking to the Prime Minister of China, a militant character, by saying to him in the
present what she sees herself being reminded of in her flashforward at a peace gathering. This
climatic moment is relieved by Louise's ability. This scene is difficult to show in word,

My Criteria for Film Evaluation Essay
My Criteria for Film Evaluation
There are three major standards through which I decide whether or not I will watch a film:
reputation, and genre. Reputation is inclusive of friends and ratings of the film. Usually my friends
and I have similar tastes and we are aroused or repulsed by the same films. Reputation is a strong
and stable standard for deciding which film to go to, because with such a large population of movie
watchers, major biases don't affect the reputation and ratings are fair and accurate. Also, people are
inclined to give high ratings to movies that touch them or really make them think regardless...show

I have also noticed the exact opposite pattern with people who watch feel good movies. It gives
them motivation to strive for a life such as the ones they have seen, a goal perhaps. Indeed, the
feel good movies may be oppressive in a sense people strive for unrealistic living, something that
may not ever happen, but it is always comparatively better to strive for something and never reach
it, than to never strive at all. That is why I love feel good movies.
I recently watched The Pursuit of Happyness. It was a feel good movie about a man who had
nothing and how even his nothing declined to just himself and his son. His apartment got taken
away, his wife left him, and even after he started to live in a motel, it got taken away also, all
because of a lack of money. He worked hard selling useless pieces of equipment that a very small
population of buyers would want. He walked countless miles to each buyer each day at a potential
shot at buying his merchandise. He made bare minimum and sometimes couldn't give enough food to
his son. But through all the change, one thing stayed constant, the pursuit of happiness. He strove
learning and soon got a job at an extremely and severe

It is now time to combine those elements into a comprehensive analysis of one movie. You will be completing this assignment in two stages: for the first stage (1500 to 1800 words), you will analyze an entire movie; in the second stage (300 to 600 words), you will reflect on how you analyzed the movie as well as how your ability...show more content... How did society affect this film (i.e., what currents in society led to the creation of the film)? If you are unable to find any information about the social impact of the film, explain the personal impact it has had on you. Note: Not every bullet point under the four listed components will necessarily apply to your movie. However, you will still need to discuss each of the four main components thoroughly, which means that you may need to explain a concept even if it can‟t be directly applied to your movie. Your paper should be organized around a thesis statement that clarifies what you will attempt to accomplish in your paper, and how you will proceed. Additionally, you must conclude with a restatement of the thesis and a conclusion paragraph. Stage 2: Reflection After completing your movie analysis, you will reflect on the analysis process and how you have learned to more thoroughly analyze film as well as how rigorous study of film enhances your development as a student and thinker. In this 300– to 600–word reflection, review your initial post from the "Post Your Introduction" discussion in Week One, and consider how your ability to analyze movies has changed or grown. Append your reflection to the analysis portion of your paper. Your reflection should be personal and exploratory in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Final Film Critique: Crash (2004) Final Film Critique: Crash (2004) Jay Dennis ENG 225 Introduction to Film Instructor: Cicely Young April 13, 2014 Final Film Critique Draft: Crash (2004) There are many different critical elements and artistic aspects to examine when analyzing and critiquing any film. In 2004 Paul Haggis wrote and directed the award winning drama Crash about various intertwining experiences involving racial relations and the socioeconomic status levels of the diverse cast of characters. This film addresses how humans being deal with real life circumstances and addresses how racial stereotypes and prejudices impact our society by causing a separation of customs, ignoring human and civil rights, and demonstrating how racism can cause moral,...show more content... The songs that were part of the soundtrack of the film are played at moments that were significant to the scene. A perfect example is when Thandie Newton's character, Christine, is trapped inside of the wrecked car and the same racist officer that physically violated her the previous evening, played by Matt Dillon, was trying to rescue her; as the song Flames by Mark Isham played in the background. This song is an Old Persian folklore song that was written as a ballad, but the mood and the melody is perfect for the scene as the two characters must trust one another and set aside their grievances in order to make it out of the situation alive. The superb acting was not the only visible element that allowed this award winning film to engage the viewer. The film begins with the out of focus shots of the car headlights which could possibly be setting up the audience to see that the characters in the film will not be what they seem and may also lack focus throughout the film as well. The cinematography around the majority of the film is subtle as the director chose to focus more on close–ups and the raw emotions on the actor's faces and expressions. There are very few scenes where a lot of action is necessary to carry the movie, but the scenes that do contain action, such as the attempted carjacking of Terrence Howard's character, Cameron, and the ensuing police Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The movie explores ethical and social issues involved in the infamous Tuskegee Study. The study was about untreated black men with syphilis. The U.S. Public Health Service is said to have conducted a study among 600 black Americans from the years 1932 to 1972. This study was done in Macon County. This paper will exclusively explore the critique the Miss Ever's Boys film using ethical frameworks. The ethical framework includes beneficence, justice, and respect for persons, duty–based ethics, virtue–based ethics, and the right's–based ethics. The paper will identify how the above listed ethical principles were...show more content... In the movie, "Miss Ever's Boys", only blacks were included in the study. The study recruited 600 black men and none white person. To start with, this was discrimination of the highest order. This means that only the black men were at the risk of dying, considering that they treated them with placebos. This means that only the black men's lives were endangered while the bioethics requires that the risk to be distributed equally (B. Miss Evers Boys and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, 2013). Respect for persons means that people have a right to fully exercise their autonomy. Here, people need to be given a chance to make their own choices. In the film, Miss Ever's Boys, it is clear that the participants were not respected at all. The first show of disrespect was when the U.S. Public Health Service decided to conduct a study and lie to the participants that they were going to offer them cure to syphilis. The second disrespect shown was the discrimination in the study where only the blacks were selected. Lastly, the U.S. Public Health Service disrespected the participants knowing that it was dangerous. Therefore, the respect for person ethical principle was not meet in the movie "Miss Ever's Boys". Duty–based ethics are based on duty or obligation. Kant argues that there are higher principles that are good in no matter the time, situation, or culture. Therefore, when faced with Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Final Film Critique Essay Final Film Critique Richard Hogan ENG 225: Introduction to Film October 25, 2011 Final Film Critique Introduction The movie, The Shawshank Redemption (1994), is based on a character Andy Dufresne. Andy is a young and successful banker who is sent to Shawshank Prison for murdering his wife and her secret lover. His life is changed drastically upon being convicted and being sent to prison. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20–years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. He becomes friends with Red, and they both comfort and empathize with each other while in prison. The story has a strong message of hope, spirit, determination, courage, and desire....show more content... In the film's final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and racism. The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden's salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. At the same time he hangs himself his bird (Jake) fly's away and is freed. The metaphor is that the librarian is free of his lifelong nightmare of being told what Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Critique Of The Movie Gasland Gasland: A Movie Critique The documentary Gasland, directed by Josh Fox provides insight on the effects of living in a natural gas driven society. The film features Josh Fox's search to discover how natural gas companies operate and the unseen consequences people have to live with as a result of corporate greed. Fox becomes curious about the gas industry in 2009 when he receives a letter from government regulators asking if he will relinquish his property for one hundred thousand dollars because it is located on the Marcellus shale, commonly known as the middle east of the United States. He fears that signing his property over will contaminate the Delaware River water supply. The Pennsylvania EPA informs the public that their water is still clean even though entire neighborhoods have seen their water fizzle because it is contaminated with natural gases. This prompts him to go on a journey to see how other communities have been...show more content... Furthermore, it is subjective because Josh Fox's reasoning behind creating the film was solely because he experienced the negative outcomes due to fracking in his hometown, and most likely would not have created this work if it were not for his negative experience. Fox strengthens his argument by interviewing normal citizens all across the United States. These are accurate and real instances of how the general public has been taken advantage of by the natural gas industry. By interviewing regular people, such as the man who loved lighting his water on fire, Fox captures their personalities allowing the audience to genuinely relate and feel for these people. He also interviews a man by the name of Westin Wilson, an EPA regulator, and even though he works for the natural gas industry he believes the industry is unjust and operates Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. The movie that I chose to critique is Rear Window, a realist film by Alfred Hitchcock produced in 1954. Starring James Stewart, Grace Kelly and, Wendell Corey. The genre is thriller and the sub genre is suspense infused with mystery. Rear Window is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most inspired audience participation films. When a person watches it, he feels, tantalized, shocked, and exhilarated. Further in this essay, I will summarize the plots, discuss the styles used, and deconstruct parts of the film. He starts to peek at his neighbors from his rear window. With his eyes he...show more content... Alfred Hitchcock, the director points it out to the audience as he concentrates on Jeff focusing on what's happening inside his neighborhood. He allows the audience to stay focused as we become voyeurs and see the various dramas that are being unfolded. Hitchcock has great technical brilliance with a great ability to portray a story in a very distinctive manner. He uses the technique of dramatic variation of size to achieve other desired emotions from the audience, by cutting from long shots to extreme close ups. The story line in the film revolves around voyeurism, guilt, friendship, and sexuality. Moreover, the editing techniques in the film are used to raise attention to the events that are unfolding in front of us. The shots in the movie are connected in a relatively subjective style. According to Hitchcock "Cutting should not be thought of in terms of "cutting" but rather in terms more like "assembly" or "Mosaic'' (Hitchcok, 1963, p.4). Montage, is the process or technique of selecting and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole. When two shots are juxtaposed in such a way it gives the third another meaning. This is one classic examples of Alfred Hitchcock's way of thinking. But this is where many people beg to differ regarding the film critic's reviews on a particular film. Although we like some similar and some different types of movies, we like to watch and discuss them together. I look for many different things when I watch a movie. The Biggest thing I look for is plot. I want the plot to make sense and to flow well. I hate when movies have a lot of unexplained plot holes, it makes the movie hard to watch. I think the best movies have well thought out plots. The plot should make the person watching the movie interested in watching until the end. Another thing I look for in movies is actors who are good at acting. In my opinion, I believe that a bad actor can ruin the whole movie. Sometimes it can Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Piraino ENG 225 INRO TO FILM Instructor Pal December 17, 2012 An Analysis of the film Gone with the Wind Rarely has a film impacted an audience and held the test of time as the film Gone with the Wind. I have always been curious if director, Victor Fleming and producer, David O. Selznick and screenplay writer, Sidney Howard knew what they were creating a masterpiece and how this film would have such an enormous impact on audiences for years to come. Interestingly enough there were some who thought the film should not be made, as Irving Thalberg said to Louis B. The equipment was very cumbersome and color consultants were necessary to ensure accurate tones and hues as directed by Selznick. (Dunagan, 2001). Selznick was very innovative with the use of shadows and silhouettes, which he uses in several scenes of the film. Selznick's use of silhouettes in both the opening scene and the scene prior to intermission are very dramatic as they arouse emotion on the part of the audience. However, the emotions they evoked are very different. In the opening scene, the silhouette of Scarlett and her father, Gerald the audience can feel the love that Gerald has for his daughter as he illuminates his love for the land and how she will understand as she get older. The audience can almost feel the picturesque beauty of the land before them, as the sun is setting and Scarlett and Gerald in silhouettes. The second scene where Selznick uses silhouettes is directly prior to the intermission of the film. However, the emotions here are far different. Scarlett has journeyed to Tara, from the recently Yankee occupied Atlanta, with Melanie and her newborn son and Prissy. She has encountered nothing but death and destruction on her voyage. War beaten Scarlett returns to her home Tara only to find her home, ravaged, her sisters ailing, her mother dead, her father mad and the plantation lacking food since Tara was used as Yankee Get more content on HelpWriting.net

None of these key features to a film could have any substance or feeling without the help of music. Composers play a big role for setting the tone of the movie, developing characters, moving along or supporting action, and depicting the time and place the movie is taking place. In the movie Heat, Elliot Goldenthal does just that. Goldenthal was born in NY in 1954 and studied music under John Corigliano and Aaron Copeland. There is a moment when De Niro realizes he cannot make it out with the girl and in and unspoken stare he leaves. The music matches the feeling of the moment using long drown out chords creating that sense a wanting and loss. As Pacino chases De Niro through a field the music stops to intensify the action and set up the final scene. The music fades back in shortly before Pacino shoots De Niro. The music carries into a high key riff that is repeated with strings playing four tones slowly behind the keys. The music grows louder adding more instruments such as large cymbals and carries into the credits. Goldenthal's score was replaced in the final scene with Moby's "God Moving Over the Face of the Water." Director Michael Mann felt that Moby's music better represented a feeling of relief, that it was over, that Pacino finally got his guy. At the same time the music related the two characters. Burgheimer HUM/150 Week Five Individual Film Critique This week for the final film critique I chose to review The Blind Side (2009). In this film Sandra Bullock plays Leigh Anne Tuohy, a successful interior designer. Her husband Sean Tuohy played by Tim McGraw is the owner of over 85 fast food franchises including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and Long John Silver's. In the film Leigh Anne takes a boy named Michael "Big Mike" Oher into her home and provides him with the opportunity of a lifetime. There are also quite a few scenes in the film in which the cameras depth of field and focus are used in different ways to either focus only on one particular subject in the shot or focus on all subjects both near and far using a deep focus. As far as the context of the film is concerned I believe it would be possible to take certain scenes and piece them together in such a way as to illustrate a theme, but I believe watching the entire film really brings everything together. I have no personal influences or biases that affected my opinion of the film. I believe that this film is a very heartfelt and enjoyable story and there are no overtones that should cause the viewer to be influenced otherwise. Overall I love the story and I think that the Tuohy family set an amazing example for others to follow. This film has many genres to include biography, drama, and sports genres. The most prevalent genre for this film is the biography genre. The Blind Side (2009) tells the story of Michael Oher, the first round NFL draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens. Through the film the life and times of Michael are chronicled from his early childhood upbringing in the aptly named Hurt Village, to the life he now lives as a professional football player in the NFL. The film also incorporates many theatrical elements of a drama and due to the nature of the film it may also fall into the sports genre. This film was very enjoyable to watch and there are many reasons that I would watch Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Enough : A Critical Analysis Of The Movie Enough Critical Analysis of Enough The movie Enough is a suspenseful and heart–wrenching movie about a young woman named Slim, her daughter Gracie, and her abusive husband Mitch. At the beginning of the movie, Slim is working as a waitress in a diner and meets Mitch after he intervened a conversation between Slim and another man. At first, Mitch is viewed as a hero because he stood up for Slim when she was being hit on by a man who made a bet with his friends. As soon as he realized he didn't have control over her he resorted to being extremely violent. The Power and Control Diagram can be used to examine the patterns of abuse and violence Mitch uses in attempt to gain control of Slim and Gracie (Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, 1984). Mitch's abusive behavior continued to escalate throughout the movie, beginning with controlling behaviors and quickly intensifying into life threatening abuse. Along with physical violence, Mitch engages in numerous abusive behaviors and scare tactics to maintain power and control Slim. The Power and Control Wheel depicts the abusive behaviors commonly used by batters alongside physical and sexual violence (Domestic Abuse Intervention Project, 1984). During the scene when Slim found out about the affair, Mitch minimized the issue of him cheating by telling Slim that the other woman didn't matter, and that she was just there to satisfy his needs. Mitch told Slim he refused to live without her, but he was going to continue to cheat and she had to allow it. Mitch emotionally abused Slim by making her feel weak and helpless. Male privilege is a factor within the Power and Control Wheel which Mitch used to portray his power and obtain control over Slim. It cost about $135,000,000 to produce, but has since made all of that and more back. "The Revenant" won Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Achievement in Cinematography. It was also nominated for 9 other Oscars including Best Motion Picture of the Year. Thisfilm was very well made and it deserves all its nominations and awards. This was the first time I had seen this film. I watched it in my room by myself and I chose to watch it because I couldn't decide what movie to watch for my film review and a friend recommended it. I then saw the large number of awards it received and was nominated for, and I had to watch it. "The Revenant" is about the survival story of Hugh Glass. Glass was traveling with a group of fur traders, when he was mauled by a grizzly bear. He barely survives and the members of the group try to bring him back to the fort. I soon becomes very difficult to carry him through the rocky terrain, so a group of men volunteer to stay behind and care for him until help arrives or he dies. The men who stay behind are his son, Bridger, and John Fitzgerald. John Fitzgerald doesn't care about Glass so he kills his son and then tricks Bridger into leaving Glass behind. Glass must then survive with his injuries and make it back to get his revenge on Fitzgerald. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It quickly became a global phenomenon and has accumulated some of the most passionate fans in the universe. Star Wars: Episode IV– A New Hope is a great example to use in order to illustrate the properties discussed throughout the course. In this paper, I will analyze the entire movie. Science fiction is broadly defined as a film about the future or alternate realities, often but not always set in space, and frequently incorporating horror elements, science–fiction movies are wildly popular among fans (Goodykoontz, 2014). As a subgenre of fantasy, science fiction enables viewers to relate to themes from an idealized alternative version of reality (Edwards, 2014). Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope is a feature–length film that fits this genre perfectly. Star Wars: Episode IV– A New Hope unfolds as princess named Leia is held hostage by the evil Imperial forces in their effort to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker and a smuggler named Han Solo team together with the lovable droid duo, R2–D2 and C–3PO, to rescue the beautiful princess and restore justice in the galaxy. • 18. Film Critique Paper: and the Band Played on Film Critique Paper And the Band Played On The movie is about the first couple years of AIDS, mostly in the United States. It tells the political as well as the scientific struggle that occurred with the discovery of AIDS. The main character Dr. Don Francis heads the research of AIDS with little money and little help. This was because AIDS was considered the "gay man's disease" and there was more emphasis on who discovered the disease than actually helping those who had it. Basically, the movie was about the government and many other individuals being ignorant and looking the other way because homosexual males were seen as a lesser priority and group. As to the question of what long–term effect did prejudice and...show more content... I saw this when Dr. Francis asks how many hemophiliacs does the committee need to die before it becomes cost efficient for them to do something about it. He asks when will it be more profitable for them to save people then it is to kill them. This showed me that lives are not valued as equal, especially homosexual one. I just do not know how this becomes to be, particularly by the government which is not supposed to be prejudice. If the same situation had arisen and effected anyone other than the gay community, I believe that the situation would have been handled differently. The movie also showed how individuals put themselves before others, especially those who should not. In the movie, Dr. Gallo pulls all support from Dr. Francis including re–agents and antibodies to the virus. Dr. Gallo puts him and his reputation before all the others that had and could get the virus. To him, the virus was an opportunity to further his name and reputation in the scientific community. Dr. Gallo chose to play god when he decided to pull the resources from Dr. Francis. He could have saved countless of others but he wasted precious time to find out more about the virus and make people aware. As for him, I think no punishment would be too severe in justification of his actions. Overall, the actions of the government and from individuals like Dr. Gallo resulted in the gay community to suffer greatly. Not only did AIDS effect them Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. The Arrival Of The Future The Arrival of the Future Is the beginning the end? This is how Denis Villeneuve, director of Arrival, decided to begin the Oscar nominated film. With nonlinear timeline at the focus of the film, this controversial style illustrates violence between characters, specifically Louise, shows the tool given to humanity by the Heptapods, and the relationship of the characters. Erik Bork, an Emmy and Golden Globe winning author for HBO, states that "Jumping around in time with flashbacks can be confusing in a script, and can make it hard for a reader to get oriented and settle into one particular story, in a specific time frame" (Bork, par. 1). He continues to explain, "It's usually better to just have one, at most, and have the rest of the movie take place in what seems like continuous present time" (Bork, par. 9). Many critics would agree with Bork, siding with his belief in the confusing nature of flashbacks. However, Arrival's use of a nonlinear timeline is vital to the story of the film. the Heptapods give Louise the ability to see time in a nonlinear fashion. There is no other way the writers of Arrival could have conveyed her newfound ability. Her ability to perceive future events is evident while Louise is talking to the Prime Minister of China, a militant character, by saying to him in the present what she sees herself being reminded of in her flashforward at a peace gathering. This climatic moment is relieved by Louise's ability. This scene is difficult to show in word, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. My Criteria for Film Evaluation Essay My Criteria for Film Evaluation There are three major standards through which I decide whether or not I will watch a film: reputation, and genre. Reputation is inclusive of friends and ratings of the film. Usually my friends and I have similar tastes and we are aroused or repulsed by the same films. Reputation is a strong and stable standard for deciding which film to go to, because with such a large population of movie watchers, major biases don't affect the reputation and ratings are fair and accurate. Also, people are inclined to give high ratings to movies that touch them or really make them think regardless...show more content... I have also noticed the exact opposite pattern with people who watch feel good movies. It gives them motivation to strive for a life such as the ones they have seen, a goal perhaps. Indeed, the feel good movies may be oppressive in a sense people strive for unrealistic living, something that may not ever happen, but it is always comparatively better to strive for something and never reach it, than to never strive at all. That is why I love feel good movies. I recently watched The Pursuit of Happyness. It was a feel good movie about a man who had nothing and how even his nothing declined to just himself and his son. His apartment got taken away, his wife left him, and even after he started to live in a motel, it got taken away also, all because of a lack of money. He worked hard selling useless pieces of equipment that a very small population of buyers would want. He walked countless miles to each buyer each day at a potential shot at buying his merchandise. He made bare minimum and sometimes couldn't give enough food to his son. But through all the change, one thing stayed constant, the pursuit of happiness. He strove learning and soon got a job at an extremely and severe Get more content on HelpWriting.net
