The Process of Project Management Essay
A project is a temporary activity undertaken to produce a unique product, service or result. This
activity called project, has three clearly defined components to it, namely
Time: A definitive start and end date.
Cost: A definitive budget for the activity to take place.
Scope: Magnitude of work including the deliverable and/or goals that has to be accomplished.
On the other hand, project management is a practice of applying knowledge, skills, tools and
techniques to the project activities to achieve the project requirements effectively and efficiently
(Heagney, 2012; Project Management Institute , 2008). A project manager is one who practises this

Here, the problem that a project would set out to solve, is defined at a broadest sense. Problem in
this context, is not meant in a negative sense but a business case that would provide a reasoning for
initializing a project. The project manager, project team and the project board are appointed in this
phase. The project board consists of representatives from each of the stakeholder's groups. They form
an authoritative body looking after the project (Project Management Institute , 2008).
Planning:
Planning phase gives a clearer view of what is to be done in a project. It involves planning for
scope, time, cost, risk, quality, communication, human resources and procurements. This planning
should be carried out by the project manager with the help of the whole project team and suppliers.
In other words, the people who do the work should help plan it (Heagney, 2012).
In this phase, first, the scope is analysed completely. For which, the project manager conducts
interviews to understand and document the stakeholders' needs. After that, with the help of the
project team, the project manager documents the detailed description of the product or service
including the magnitude of work and all the deliverables, the project sets out to produce and, the
strategy with which it is going be proceeded.

Project Management
In today's business it is in the best interest of companies to have project managers. Common sense
isn't always easily accomplished. Anyone who's ever worked on a project in a technical setting
knows this. Indeed, much of working with others consists of solving unexpected problems and
learning from mistakes along the way. Knowing this and having the proper tools a project manager
will be able to manage and complete the most intense project out there.
It seems that people time and again have the wrong impression of what a project manager does. It is
not about being able to create a compound plan to hang on the wall. It is not about setting up
conference after conference. This is about understanding a big...show more content...
Using project management offers a business a way for dealing with considerably lowered phase
times. With businesses operating internationally projects that can have an effect on the company as a
whole are not easy to manage without a proper line of attack. For this, project management would
help cross functional teams to be more successful.
The conservative understanding is that the only person who can be of assistance with a dilemma
is the individual who has knowledge in the exact product, development tool, or design that is
being used. Despite the fact that this may possibly be accurate for some projects, it's not
automatically accurate for all projects. The person with the best mix of experience is the one that
will need the least amount of time to come up to speed on what it is trying to be accomplished.
Every person that is brought in to help will have some sort of a learning curve that will need to get
past. It's just a matter of managing the learning curve so that it has the least impact on the overall
time and costs for the project.
To bring in a project manager there are many skills that this person will need. According to the
website ProjectSmart, these skills are but not limited to: "A project manager must have a range of
skills including: Leadership, People management (customers, suppliers, managers and colleagues),

Essay on Project Life cycle
Project management plays an important role in achieving a successful project as it manage the
project according the schedule and budget. According to Schwalbe (2011), project life cycle defined
as a collection of project phases, development, implementation and close–out. There are five
important steps in developing project life cycle namely defining project goal, planning project,
executing project, closing project and lastly, evaluating the project (refer to Figure 1 in Appendix).
Firstly, project manager define the project goal. Project goal is the first step as it set the objectives

that, document the information and handed the report to the project manager through the regular
team meetings. With these steps finished, a phase review is undertaken where the reported
information are analysed carefully by the project manager. This is a checkpoint to make sure the
product and services has achieved the goals and customer need before proceeds to next stage. The
fourth step in developing project is to close the project. This stage includes a formally
documentation and implementation of a project close report. Before the project closure, project
checking is carry out as an extra insured. Westland (2006) stated that the, project close out is include
ensuring all the project completion criteria have met and identified any outstanding project

There are different methods that will get a project completed. Some projects failed due poor
planning or poor decision making by the project manager. However, according to Harold Kerzner,
"Today, excellent companies realize that project failures have more to do with behavioral
shortcomings – poor employee morale, negative human relations, low productivity, and lack of
commitment." (377).
Today, project managers are to focus on situational leadership, which is known to be effective in
project management. Situational leadership refers to when the leader of the project must adjust his
style of leadership to the team members' personalities. Situational leader is known to be effective in
project management. It is important for leaders to focus on their behavior towards the team, such as
"tolerance of external events and tolerance of people's personalities." (378). There have been
managers that had to change their leadership style from traditional to situational leadership to lead
their team to success. To be successful, it is a mixture of a person's experience and personality with
his or her style of leadership.
Once the decision has been established and shared by the project manager, the project manager is
recognized to possess strong behavioral skills and are presumably have a successful project.
Additionally, a project manager who maintains a strong behavioral skills are delegate

In 1994, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined quality as "the totality of
characteristics of an entity that bear on its ability to satisfy stated or implied needs". When applying
these two definitions to project management it means the inputs used in defining the project
requirements from the donor and the beneficiaries must meet the intended objectives of the project.
Consequently, project managers have a role of ensuring that all project activities necessary to
designing, planning and implementing a project are effective and efficient. This is with respect to
the purpose of the objective and its performance. This role can be achieved when project managers
carry out project quality management.
The misconception that project quality management is a separate and independent process that
occurs at the end of a project, and measures the level of quality of the output is misleading because
this will be all about finding and fixing errors. A true project quality management is not only a
continuous monitoring of quality processes, but also an application of the quality processes in all
aspects of the project.
Project Quality tools are used to control the quality in a project. This paper comprehensively
discusses these tools. Its purpose is to enlighten project managers on the quality control tools that can
help them deliver better quality.

This technical dimension includes planning, scheduling, and controlling projects. The sociocultural

Some suggest that the technical dimension represents the "science" of project management while the

Project Management Theory Essay
1.Introduction The High Speed Two is a high speed rail that is of very high profile within the UK
right now. The project is to update the current rails as well as gaining better punctuality of
service, less crowded trains and an increase of business travellers as well as a reduction in carbon
emissions. The project is designed to update the rail network between London and the North West
of England initially with the intention of expanding further north. The reason for this report is to
evaluate three variation requests made to the High Speed Two project. The three requests are, first,
a variation to the original route to take in more of Oxfordshire, second is to add a station in
Madeley and third is a change of supplier. After completing...show more content...
The reason for this is because the parties affected by the change are at the centre. Kurt Lewin
designed the theory so that there was a one–to–one relationship between the experiment and the
variables (Reason and Bradbury 2001). Through this theory it was further enhanced the
importance of the opinion of the people affected by the change and in this case the people living
around the rail and the people who are in need of a good commute route (Lawman 2014a). To gain
the peoples' opinion it was suggested by a Norwegian to introduce a conference to act as a mediator
between the company and the public (Reason and Bradbury 2001). 2.1.2Risk Management Theory
According to Hubbard (2009), risk management is "the identification, assessment, and prioritization
of risk followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and
control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events." When putting risk management into the
context of a project, the objective becomes recognizing where the problems might occur as well as
having a contingency plan in place to be able to take the appropriate preventative and remedial
actions. For this project, when making a variation to the original route the main risks are going to lie
with the objectives, time, cost and quality as well as the external environmental factors of an
organisation (Pellegrinelli 1997). The

is a project? A project refers to an intended outcome requiring the implementation of a series of
actions conducted in a uniform sequence of events. Many people have failed to understand this
concept. I have witnessed a variety of incomplete lists of the project from a number of people. In
today's world, people have different ideas, which could be a source of the problem or an
opportunity for a project (Kerzner, 2013). What are the basic phases of the project lifecycle and
their purposes? There are very many names given to the different stages of the course of a project
that are also sourced from different professionals and authors. As for the case of management
professionals for facilities, it is very important to give gratitude to the project phases, which includes
four main branches, with the use of acronym C–D–E–F: in actual names, conceptual phase, design
phase, execution phase, and finishing phase (Field, & Keller, 2008). The first phase known as the
conceptual phase includes generation of ideas, implementation and enacting the completion of a
possible study with a clear description of the reason behind the intended project. At this phase, the
project is discussed as the first phase and its main objective is to assess the proposed project fueled
by a recognizable need, problem or opportunity, which relates to the strategic objectives of an

Prior to this course, I thought that in order to manage a project you need to be a project manager.
However, this course changed my perspective on project management. As I continue to read the

Project management is not only useful in the working environment, but it could also become great
skills that can be used for all life projects that we do through out our life.
There are many different types of project management certification, but the certification I'm
interesting in pursuing is PMP. PMP certification is one of the leading project management
certifications, and one third of certified project managers obtained PMP. Unlike the other project
management certification, PMP doesn't focus on only one particular geography or domain; instead
PMP certification is global (PMI, 2017). Individuals who are PMP certified have the option to work
in any industry with methodology and any location (PMI, 2917). In addition, organizations that have
PMP certified project manager, meet their projects original goals, and they complete their project on
time and on budget (PMI, 2015).
Since I'm planning to work both within and outside the United States, I believe the PMP
certification is the right choice for me. Obtaining this certification will help me become a better

Experience plays a major role in managing a project. The project manager needs to know the
subject to some degree and have a good idea as to what types of resources are available to
complete a project. A project manager also needs to have a good idea of what steps should happen
to manage a project from start to finish. Experience is the only thing that can help really refine the
process and to allow a process to come in most economically.
The need to ask the right questions comes from repetitively working on projects. Knowing what to

This could cause the project to fail even before it begins. Attitude really can make or break a
project. If a different project manager has had great experiences previously with similar projects, he
or she could make their current project come in ahead of schedule and under budget. Experience
does play a lot into these negative and positive attitudes but also the relationship of the project
manager with the people that the project is for or the project team can affect the outcome or even
the start of a project. If the project manager has had positive experiences with these people the
project will run much more smoothly and probably come out quite successful but if there are
personality conflicts or a myriad of different negative items between these parties a project could
complete very poorly or even fail.
The type of team that works on a project also affects the outcome greatly. If this team has worked
on other projects that were similar in type and scope of the project they were assigned they have a
great wealth of knowledge that can be shared among each other. There are not many people in the
world today that knows everything but, by pooling together diverse backgrounds that can share
their knowledge, this knowledge in essence can become one. With this great knowledge base, much
more is accomplished in a shorter period of time and at a far cheaper cost.

When everyone on the team is expected to contribute to the ideas and goals of the project, they gain

"The most productive organization is the one in which "there is the largest

Total effectiveness, at the right times–because they understand what ought to be

Research has proven that employees are more likely to work towards company goals when they
[employees] believe in and support the goals. It is imperative that management and employees
determine project goals to ensure that everyone is working toward the same goals and outputs. An
implemented project with no employee backing will not be as successful because employees do not
feel the project is their project, therefore, they do not see the outputs as representation of themselves.
Since many projects require a large amount of time to complete, many times employees may find
themselves loosing sight of the goals. There are many different ways to eliminate such problems.
Management of Projects Online suggests that management take the following steps in reducing

Project Management Essays

  • 1. The Process of Project Management Essay A project is a temporary activity undertaken to produce a unique product, service or result. This activity called project, has three clearly defined components to it, namely Time: A definitive start and end date. Cost: A definitive budget for the activity to take place. Scope: Magnitude of work including the deliverable and/or goals that has to be accomplished. On the other hand, project management is a practice of applying knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to the project activities to achieve the project requirements effectively and efficiently (Heagney, 2012; Project Management Institute , 2008). A project manager is one who practises this project management. The project management, while accomplishing the project, undergoes...show more content... Here, the problem that a project would set out to solve, is defined at a broadest sense. Problem in this context, is not meant in a negative sense but a business case that would provide a reasoning for initializing a project. The project manager, project team and the project board are appointed in this phase. The project board consists of representatives from each of the stakeholder's groups. They form an authoritative body looking after the project (Project Management Institute , 2008). Planning: Planning phase gives a clearer view of what is to be done in a project. It involves planning for scope, time, cost, risk, quality, communication, human resources and procurements. This planning should be carried out by the project manager with the help of the whole project team and suppliers. In other words, the people who do the work should help plan it (Heagney, 2012). In this phase, first, the scope is analysed completely. For which, the project manager conducts interviews to understand and document the stakeholders' needs. After that, with the help of the project team, the project manager documents the detailed description of the product or service including the magnitude of work and all the deliverables, the project sets out to produce and, the strategy with which it is going be proceeded. • 2. Project Management Essay examples Project Management In today's business it is in the best interest of companies to have project managers. Common sense isn't always easily accomplished. Anyone who's ever worked on a project in a technical setting knows this. Indeed, much of working with others consists of solving unexpected problems and learning from mistakes along the way. Knowing this and having the proper tools a project manager will be able to manage and complete the most intense project out there. It seems that people time and again have the wrong impression of what a project manager does. It is not about being able to create a compound plan to hang on the wall. It is not about setting up conference after conference. This is about understanding a big...show more content... Using project management offers a business a way for dealing with considerably lowered phase times. With businesses operating internationally projects that can have an effect on the company as a whole are not easy to manage without a proper line of attack. For this, project management would help cross functional teams to be more successful. The conservative understanding is that the only person who can be of assistance with a dilemma is the individual who has knowledge in the exact product, development tool, or design that is being used. Despite the fact that this may possibly be accurate for some projects, it's not automatically accurate for all projects. The person with the best mix of experience is the one that will need the least amount of time to come up to speed on what it is trying to be accomplished. Every person that is brought in to help will have some sort of a learning curve that will need to get past. It's just a matter of managing the learning curve so that it has the least impact on the overall time and costs for the project. To bring in a project manager there are many skills that this person will need. According to the website ProjectSmart, these skills are but not limited to: "A project manager must have a range of skills including: Leadership, People management (customers, suppliers, managers and colleagues), Communication (verbal Get more content on HelpWriting.net

When applying these two definitions to project management it means the inputs used in defining the project requirements from the donor and the beneficiaries must meet the intended objectives of the project. Consequently, project managers have a role of ensuring that all project activities necessary to designing, planning and implementing a project are effective and efficient. This is with respect to the purpose of the objective and its performance. This role can be achieved when project managers carry out project quality management. The misconception that project quality management is a separate and independent process that occurs at the end of a project, and measures the level of quality of the output is misleading because this will be all about finding and fixing errors. A true project quality management is not only a continuous monitoring of quality processes, but also an application of the quality processes in all aspects of the project. • 11. Project Management Theory Essay 1.Introduction The High Speed Two is a high speed rail that is of very high profile within the UK right now. The project is to update the current rails as well as gaining better punctuality of service, less crowded trains and an increase of business travellers as well as a reduction in carbon emissions. The project is designed to update the rail network between London and the North West of England initially with the intention of expanding further north. The reason for this report is to evaluate three variation requests made to the High Speed Two project. The three requests are, first, a variation to the original route to take in more of Oxfordshire, second is to add a station in Madeley and third is a change of supplier. After completing...show more content... The reason for this is because the parties affected by the change are at the centre. Kurt Lewin designed the theory so that there was a one–to–one relationship between the experiment and the variables (Reason and Bradbury 2001). Through this theory it was further enhanced the importance of the opinion of the people affected by the change and in this case the people living around the rail and the people who are in need of a good commute route (Lawman 2014a). To gain the peoples' opinion it was suggested by a Norwegian to introduce a conference to act as a mediator between the company and the public (Reason and Bradbury 2001). 2.1.2Risk Management Theory According to Hubbard (2009), risk management is "the identification, assessment, and prioritization of risk followed by coordinated and economical application of resources to minimize, monitor, and control the probability and/or impact of unfortunate events." When putting risk management into the context of a project, the objective becomes recognizing where the problems might occur as well as having a contingency plan in place to be able to take the appropriate preventative and remedial actions. For this project, when making a variation to the original route the main risks are going to lie with the objectives, time, cost and quality as well as the external environmental factors of an organisation (Pellegrinelli 1997). A project refers to an intended outcome requiring the implementation of a series of actions conducted in a uniform sequence of events. Many people have failed to understand this concept. I have witnessed a variety of incomplete lists of the project from a number of people. In today's world, people have different ideas, which could be a source of the problem or an opportunity for a project (Kerzner, 2013). What are the basic phases of the project lifecycle and their purposes? There are very many names given to the different stages of the course of a project that are also sourced from different professionals and authors. As for the case of management professionals for facilities, it is very important to give gratitude to the project phases, which includes four main branches, with the use of acronym C–D–E–F: in actual names, conceptual phase, design phase, execution phase, and finishing phase (Field, & Keller, 2008). The first phase known as the conceptual phase includes generation of ideas, implementation and enacting the completion of a possible study with a clear description of the reason behind the intended project. At this phase, the project is discussed as the first phase and its main objective is to assess the proposed project fueled by a recognizable need, problem or opportunity, which relates to the strategic objectives of an organization (Heldman & Get more content on HelpWriting.net

If the project manager has had positive experiences with these people the project will run much more smoothly and probably come out quite successful but if there are personality conflicts or a myriad of different negative items between these parties a project could complete very poorly or even fail. The type of team that works on a project also affects the outcome greatly.
