2. CHAPTER 7 (CONNECTING LEARNERS AT A DISTANCE)
1. What is distance learning?
Distance learning was popular used in describing learning via telecommunication. Distance
learning is instructional delivery systems that connect learners regardless of their location,
with educational resources. As distance learning occurs in different place from learning, it
requires special techniques of course design, instructional design and communication. It used
technology to make possible new approaches to the teaching and learning process rather than
simply the addition of technology to instruction.
2. How do audio and television systems facilitate distance learning?
Audio such as radio was one of the first technologies that have been used to deliver
education remotely. Although the usage of this facilitate item are rare nowadays, but it’s still
use in the area where the internet connection low. Successful of audio usage is when
consideration of what resources is available to students at various locations and awareness
that the audio may be sufficient to convey the learning experience. One issues associated to
audio usage is lack of visual information. However, audio can be supplemented by handout
which is faxed to the students in order to help students understanding.
Television technologies offer many different types of instructional opportunities for
learners. Students can learn on their own by watching channel provided such as Discovery
channel. One-way television term referring to television delivery systems that transmit
programs to students without interactive to teacher. Two-way television communication
system is differentiating when it can be use for sending audio feedback to the presenter. It
will happen with help of camera and microphone devices. In such cases, television simulates
the regular classroom setting by allowing interactions between students and teacher. Some
interactive television system use compressed video, which removes redundant video
information.
3. Identify three characteristics each of LAN, WAN, intranet, and wireless networks.
a) LAN
i)
Relies on centralized computer called server and all computers connect to it
ii)
All classrooms can access to the school’s collection of software and data
iii)
Can reduce technology’s workload
3. b) WAN
i)
Networks that extend beyond wall of room or building, connecting via cable or
fiber system
ii)
Can connect computers over a wide geographic area
iii)
Often used for smaller configurations
c) Intranet
i)
Used internally by a school or organization
ii)
Systems connected to it are private and accessible only by authorized person
iii)
May have firewall to prevents external user accessing internal network
d) Wireless Network
i)
Connect computer without wire
ii)
Computer no longer bound to workstation
iii)
Can used laptop anywhere within the access area to the internet
