Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Scope
Introduction
An engine stand is a tool commonly used to repair large
heavy gasoline or diesel engines. It uses a heavy cantilevered support structure
to hold the engine in midair so that the mechanic has access to any exposed
surface of the engine. While small single-piston engines can commonly be laid
on a table for repair, a large engine is normally meant to be supported from its
engine mounts or from the flywheel transmission case mounts and fragile
components such as oil pans and valve covers would be crushed if the large
engine were placed on a flat surface. Engine stands are typically mounted on
large casters so than an engine can be moved around the shop to different test
and repair stations, and the engine can often be rotated in midair to provide

On the other hand, the design of the stand engine requires fundamental
requirements and elements in order to link and perform complete functions and
operations for engine repair.
An engine stand is illustrated having a universal mounting apparatus for
securing loads such as different sizes of automotive engines and the like to a
rotatable face plate which has a wheeled stand therefor. The invention further
contemplates an extensible wheeled support on the stand having adjustable
means for balancing and stabilizing the load carried by the universal mounting.
On the other hand, the design of the engine stand should consider mechanisms
and functions on how this engine stand is used more particularly in automotive
maintenance for engine repair.
Engine stand is one of the important tools in automotive maintenance for
engine repair that the mechanic technicians used. Furthermore, it usefulness and
beneficiality for the automobile and mechanic technicians are helpful, convenient
and efficient in order to perform well in maintaining and repairing engines.
However, engine stands in the local market are becoming expensive that the

In line with the rationale and objectives of this study, the design of engine
stand will present its mechanism, functions and activities for engine repair and
maintenance and further inputs and highlights with regards to the design,
usefulness and effectiveness compared to a commercial engine stand in the local
market.
Conceptual Framework
According to Reillo, A. (2013) engine stand is a very important tool that
every mechanic should have. This equipment is commonly used to repair any
heavy diesel or gasoline engine. Usually, it has a cantilevered support structure
that can hold any type of engine in midair. This will give the mechanic the means
to access hard to reach parts of the engine. Engine stands are meant to repair
large engines, especially its fragile components like valve coves and oil pans.
These parts will be crushed if the engine is placed on a flat surface.
On the other hand, engine stand is a very important tool for engine repair
and automobile maintenance which has distinct mechanisms and functions that
would help the auto-mechanic to repair and fix enines.

operationability, effectiveness and efficiency. On the hand, Engine Stand is the
output of the study in which the researchers will have to present a sample or
prototype in order to see what the engine stand looks like and how it will be used
in the engine repair and automobile maintenance. Thus, the design of engine

Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be very helpful and beneficial to the following
persons, institutions and group of individuals:
Automotive Technology Instructors: This study will provide them
information and background knowledge in the design of engine stand in order to
conceptualize and understand its designs, mechanisms, functions, tests,
activities and performance with respect to its usefulness and operationability for
vehicle and engine use. Furthermore, the findings will be useful and helpful in
their instruction so that the students will be given the opportunity and experience
in designing an engine stand as learned and gained concepts, theories and
applications of this study. Thus, it will provide new information, techniques and
trends with respect to the design of engine stand considering its elements and
requirements for vehicle and engine use.
AutomotiveTechnology Students: This study will encourage them to
design an engine stand guided by its concepts, theories and principles that each
of them will be given the opportunity to discover and enhance their exploratory
and inventive skills and competencies in their area of specialization.
Furthermore, this study helps them to understand intensively the design.
mechanisms, functions, tests, activities and performance of the engine stand in
its usefulness, functionality and operationability to vehicles and engines. In other
words, the students are actually exposed and engaged to the various activities
which involved design, create, invent and conceptualize an engine stand which is
useful and helpful in repairing the damaged engines/diesels.
Future Researchers: This study will give further knowledge in the design
of engine stand encompassing its functions, mechanisms, tests, activities and
performance. On the other hand, the design of an engine stand is considered of
this as an innovation that will showcase the students’ skills, understand the
concepts and applications and encourage technical aspects in the design of
engine stand which will require student participation and involvement as guided
by the expertise of their instructor. Thus, this study will give more inputs and
highlights in the design of engine stand.
Statement of the Problem
As the engine stand focused in this study will establish functionality,
usefulness and operationality to damaged engines/diesels. Thus, it will provide
solution to engine problems and it will demonstrate students’ critical thinking,
problem solving and inventive skills in the design of a engine stand for
engine/diesel use.
This study will seek specifically to answer the following questions:
1. What is the design of the engine stand?
2. What are mechanisms and functions of each part of the engine stand?
3. What are tests and activities involved that will test its functionality,
operationability, usefulness, effectiveness and durability of the engine
stand?
4. What are other engine related-performances that the engine stand can do
for engine/diesel concerns?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This research is actually conducted at Automotive Technology Room at
Surigao del Sur State University-Cagwait Campus from January to March of the
Academic Year 2015-2016. Moreover, this study highlights and presents the
design, mechanisms, functions, tests and activities that will test its functionality,
operationability, usefulness, effectiveness, durability and other engine related-
performances that the engine stand can do for engine/diesel concerns. On the
other hand, it actually presents on how the engine stand is useful and helpful in
engine /vehicle operations and repair system.
Definition of Terms
The different terminologies used in the development of the study are
operationally and lexically defined below for clarity and easy understanding
among readers:
Activity refers to the embedded functions of an engine stand which
encompasses specifications and features. In this study, the term is used to
identify the different activities and experiments conducted for engine stand.
Design refers to the external and internal features of a certain invention.
In this study, the term is used to identify the different parts of the engine stand
for engine repair and automobile maintenance.
Engine stand refers to an automotive and mechanic tool to be used for
engine repair and automobile maintenance. In this study, the term is used to
describe the functions and mechanisms of engine stand intended for engine
repair and maintenance.
Experiment refers to a series of tests and specific tasks and activities to
define its effectiveness and usefulness. In this study, the term is used to identify
and describe engine stand in terms of experiments conducted for the to define its
usefulness and effectiveness.

Prototype refers to a certain project in a form of miniature or original
invention that will show the final and assembled project. In this study, the term is

Utility refers to the usefulness of a certain invention that will do and
respond specific actions. In this study, the term is used to describe the uses and
benefits of the engine stand for engine repair and automobile maintenance.

Modifying an engine stand made for American engines is the normal route
most of us take when getting our engines to a comfortable working height. Even
if you purchase a used stand or one from Harbor Freight, it can get expensive
when you include the cost of modifications. And then what do you do with it when
it's not in use?
Burnell Curtis, a local Alfista, suggested I use his method and save
myself some money. It sounded good to me so I thought I'd try it and pass it
on. Drill out two adjoining holes to 1/2" and add a new 3/8" hole opposite the
others to the correct dimensions of the engine mount studs. What you can't see
is that I had to file down a small amount of the base of the flange near the new
hole to provide clearance for the nut to turn. Screw in the nipples and this is what
you'll have.
Attach a flanged nipple to each engine mount and place it between two
sturdy sawhorses that are probably lying around your garage anyway. You can
rotate the engine around to whatever position you wish but you'll need to use a
2x4 to keep to engine in place. The best feature of this stand is that, when it is

which are more efficient than gasoline engines, might also take off in the U.S.
Half of the cars in Europe are diesel-powered. Diesel engines convert 45 percent

for gasoline engines. With federal fuel-economy standards getting tougher by 35
percent over the next five years, auto manufacturers recognize that the efficiency
of the internal combustion engine must improve dramatically.
Auto companies are pinning their hopes on technologies like advanced
gasoline direct injection and cooled exhaust gas recirculation that make engines
of traditional cars and trucks more efficient — and they want it done in the near
term. They are also counting on advances in high-tech materials and automobile
design to allow them to build lighter cars and small trucks without sacrificing
safety. Because lighter vehicles use less fuel, this leads to much-improved fuel
economy.
Don’t expect all of these technological advances in next year’s models, but
automakers expect to hit their fuel economy targets over the next decade, rising
from about 32 miles-per-gallon today to about 51 by 2025. Importantly, they are
achieving technological breakthroughs with the internal combustion engine on
their own, without the government subsidies that support the development of
electric vehicles. For now, the most cost-effective technology changes in the near
term are improvements in conventional cars — advanced internal combustion
engines and diesel engines — that will reduce our energy consumption and
enhance energy security.
Another issue that’s very important: As economics students know,
switching technologies involves costs, and the verdict on the economic
desirability of the switch to hybrids and electric cars is still out. Hybrids and
electric cars use rare earth metals in their batteries and in the systems that
propel the cars. China accounts for more than 90 percent of the world’s supply of
these exotic, rare earth metals. Three years ago, in retaliation for the arrest of a
Chinese fishing boat captain, China retaliated by blocking the shipment of rare
earth metals destined for Japan. Some questions arise:
Are we substituting a new set of security risks for the old ones involving
OPEC oil? Would a major shift to hybrids and electric cars leave the United
States less dependent on foreign oil but vulnerable to foreign control of rare earth
metals? The U.S. Energy Information Administration forecasts that even in 2035,
more than 99 percent of cars and trucks sold will still have internal combustion
engines. With advanced engine technologies, the potential fuel savings will be
huge.
Access to more fuel-efficient cars is not only vital to the functioning of the
larger U.S. economy, it is vital to people’s everyday lives. It also significantly
impacts America’s energy security, environmental well-being and economic
competitiveness.

RB211- 535 is a powerful engine that first entered services in January
1983. 'Frank Borman' who the president of Eastern airlines at that time was
found this engine so impressive that called it the finest airline engine in the whole
world. This engine had many advantages that made it more popular around the
world. RB211- 535 was quiet and reliable then many others at that time. It was
also the first plane to use wide cord fan, which reduces the sounds of the engine
besides increasing efficiency.
Like all other aircraft engines, this engine was also a powerful and heavy
engine, which creates a challenge to move it from one place to another. It
created a need of an engine stand that could easily carry and move it to places.

of the engine testing technology
the traditional engine stand has been unable to meet the requirements of the
engine performance test. In this paper, the research dynamic engine test
technology at home and abroad on the basis of a comprehensive test system for
automotive engine dynamic design. It is based on a traditional engine test bench
, the introduction of the transmission , flywheel groups and booster motor , using
MC9S12XDP512 chip as controller , automatic control of the engine stand . The
integrated test system capable of simulating bear the load of the engine when the
vehicle road , engine performance of research and development to provide a
valid test . For the traditional engine stand, based on the quality of the car’s
equivalent moment of inertia method to design a comprehensive test system for
automotive engine dynamic inertia flywheel group . Dynamometer transmission,
booster motors in the engine dynamic test , using appropriate layout program ,
and the completion of a comprehensive test system for automotive engine
dynamic hardware structures . In addition, based on MC9S 12XDP512 chip
design dynamic of automotive engine electronic control unit integrated test
system, modular design method, shorten the development cycle, and a variety of
anti-jamming measures to improve the reliability of hardware design. Code

controller I / O , A / D , PWM and ECT and other modules for online development
and debugging , the preparation of the related underlying interface drive C
language . The paper also analyzes the vehicle road conditions, and accelerates
the shifting and braking conditions MATLAB simulation for a comprehensive test
load load control system. Finally, the inertial flywheel group is integrated into the
vehicle road test bench simulation of the real vehicle brake test. The tests
showed that : reasonable and reliable design of automotive engine dynamic test
system , the basic realization of single-chip control of the engine test bed .

Homemade Engine Stand
After much hesitation about assembling the engine and a few tries at
different workshops (which only resulted in sloppy work), I decided I had enough
and I’m doing it myself, with some help of my friends. How hard can it be, a few
bolts, some sealant, oil and a manual. But,i if I’m going to this, it must be with
style so I decided to make myself an engine stand. First I made a no-time-to-
explain model, of things that were laying around, and with approximate
dimensions sent the model to my welder Očić. The welded stand has arrived, all
nicely covered in rust so some extra work was needed. Like some base
paint… and some finishing paint. I stole the wheels from my improvised platform
for moving things around and mounted them on my new engine stand. Josip and
I devised a system of adapters for different kind of engines that where laser cut
and welded together.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter covers the research design, research locale, and research
planning and procedure and research time target.
RESEARCH DESIGN
This study used developmental-experimental research design in order to
understand and analyze its design and mechanisms and to conduct experimental
set ups for engine repair and maintenance. In other words, The Engine Stand.
RESEARCH LOCALE
This study was conducted at Automotive Technology Laboratory Room of
the Surigao del Sur State University-Cagwait Campus, Poblacion, Cagwait,
Surigaodel Sur for Academic Year 2015-2016.
RESEARCH PLANNING AND PROCEDURE
A letter of permission to conduct the study entitled ” Engine Stand” was
submitted to the Office of the Campus Director of this University which allowed
the student researchers to use the Automotive Laboratory Room for their
developmental and experimental research activities. After the approval was
secured, the planning, designing and organizing concepts and applications of
engine stand was started.
RESEARCH TIME TARGET
The time target accomplishment of this research will be on January to
March of the Academic Year 2015-2016. Thus, there are series of experiments,
and tests will be involved, initiated and conducted for engine stand for engine
repair and automobile maintenance.

  • 1. Chapter 1 The Problem and Its Scope Introduction An engine stand is a tool commonly used to repair large heavy gasoline or diesel engines. It uses a heavy cantilevered support structure to hold the engine in midair so that the mechanic has access to any exposed surface of the engine. While small single-piston engines can commonly be laid on a table for repair, a large engine is normally meant to be supported from its engine mounts or from the flywheel transmission case mounts and fragile components such as oil pans and valve covers would be crushed if the large engine were placed on a flat surface. Engine stands are typically mounted on large casters so than an engine can be moved around the shop to different test and repair stations, and the engine can often be rotated in midair to provide easier access to underside surfaces of the engine. The engine stand is commonly used in combination with the engine crane to remove or install an engine in a vehicle, break in that engine, and perform repairs. On the other hand, the design of the stand engine requires fundamental requirements and elements in order to link and perform complete functions and operations for engine repair. An engine stand is illustrated having a universal mounting apparatus for securing loads such as different sizes of automotive engines and the like to a rotatable face plate which has a wheeled stand therefor.   • 2. contemplates an extensible wheeled support on the stand having adjustable means for balancing and stabilizing the load carried by the universal mounting. On the other hand, the design of the engine stand should consider mechanisms and functions on how this engine stand is used more particularly in automotive maintenance for engine repair. Engine stand is one of the important tools in automotive maintenance for engine repair that the mechanic technicians used. Furthermore, it usefulness and beneficiality for the automobile and mechanic technicians are helpful, convenient and efficient in order to perform well in maintaining and repairing engines. However, engine stands in the local market are becoming expensive that the automobile and mechanic owners and technicians will have to purchase for engine stands for automobile or engine maintenance. In other words, it further adds more expenses in their automobile and engine maintenance. In line with the rationale and objectives of this study, the design of engine stand will present its mechanism, functions and activities for engine repair and maintenance and further inputs and highlights with regards to the design, usefulness and effectiveness compared to a commercial engine stand in the local market.
  • 3. Conceptual Framework According to Reillo, A. (2013) engine stand is a very important tool that every mechanic should have. This equipment is commonly used to repair any heavy diesel or gasoline engine. Usually, it has a cantilevered support structure that can hold any type of engine in midair. This will give the mechanic the means to access hard to reach parts of the engine. Engine stands are meant to repair large engines, especially its fragile components like valve coves and oil pans. These parts will be crushed if the engine is placed on a flat surface. On the other hand, engine stand is a very important tool for engine repair and automobile maintenance which has distinct mechanisms and functions that would help the auto-mechanic to repair and fix enines. According to Linda Trego (2013) homemade Engine Stand Features Stronghold stand were designed to increase personnel safety, usability, and function. These features include hydraulic, automated casters and shock isolation mount; onboard storage for all tools and parts; industrial nonslip material coating to replace no-skid strips; and improved rigidity. Champion also brought new machining capabilities in-house to manufacture affiliated ground support equipment products, while still meeting demanding lead times and stringent customer qualifications. On the other hand, homemade engine stand is introduced and encouraged in order to give further inputs and information in terms of developing and designing an engine stand at home instead of purchasing commercial engine stands in the local market.
  • 4. According to Theme, K. ( 2013) the Rolls Royce engine stand has been designed on the basis of two manipulators, which can be used in a complete range of engine. The Rolls Royce engine tooling has been designed to exacting standards and the supporting tooling like the carriers and interface tooling were all subject to individual strength tests. They are the new players in the aviation market has an agreement with a company with hydro for products and services related to engine built and ground supporting system. On the other hand, Rolls Royce engine stand is good example brand for engine repair and automobile maintenance, Also, it gives the readers information about Rolls Royce engine stand having its unique and distinct designs and platforms in terms of mechanisms, functions, features and designs.
  • 5. Table 1. Schematic Diagram of the Present Study In view of the paradigm above, it shows the organization of events that transpire of this research. The designs, mechanisms, functions, tests and activities and performance are inputs of this study which will form and create the over-all structures and features of the design of engine stand intended engine repair and automobile maintenance. It will also present different activities and series of tests and experiments for engine stand in its functionality, operationability, effectiveness and efficiency. On the hand, Engine Stand is the output of the study in which the researchers will have to present a sample or prototype in order to see what the engine stand looks like and how it will be used in the engine repair and automobile maintenance. Significance of the Study The findings of this study will be very helpful and beneficial to the following persons, institutions and group of individuals: Automotive Technology Instructors: This study will provide them information and background knowledge in the design of engine stand in order to conceptualize and understand its designs, mechanisms, functions, tests, activities and performance with respect to its usefulness and operationability for vehicle and engine use. Furthermore, the findings will be useful and helpful in their instruction so that the students will be given the opportunity and experience in designing an engine stand as learned and gained concepts, theories and applications of this study. Thus, it will provide new information, techniques and trends with respect to the design of engine stand considering its elements and requirements for vehicle and engine use. AutomotiveTechnology Students: This study will encourage them to design an engine stand guided by its concepts, theories and principles that each of them will be given the opportunity to discover and enhance their exploratory and inventive skills and competencies in their area of specialization. Furthermore, this study helps them to understand intensively the design. mechanisms, functions, tests, activities and performance of the engine stand in its usefulness, functionality and operationability to vehicles and engines. In other words, the students are actually exposed and engaged to the various activities
  • 7. which involved design, create, invent and conceptualize an engine stand which is useful and helpful in repairing the damaged engines/diesels. Future Researchers: This study will give further knowledge in the design of engine stand encompassing its functions, mechanisms, tests, activities and performance. On the other hand, the design of an engine stand is considered of this as an innovation that will showcase the students’ skills, understand the concepts and applications and encourage technical aspects in the design of engine stand which will require student participation and involvement as guided by the expertise of their instructor. Thus, this study will give more inputs and highlights in the design of engine stand.
  • 8. Statement of the Problem As the engine stand focused in this study will establish functionality, usefulness and operationality to damaged engines/diesels. Thus, it will provide solution to engine problems and it will demonstrate students’ critical thinking, problem solving and inventive skills in the design of a engine stand for engine/diesel use. This study will seek specifically to answer the following questions: 1. What is the design of the engine stand? 2. What are mechanisms and functions of each part of the engine stand? 3. What are tests and activities involved that will test its functionality, operationability, usefulness, effectiveness and durability of the engine stand? 4. What are other engine related-performances that the engine stand can do for engine/diesel concerns? Scope and Limitations of the Study This research is actually conducted at Automotive Technology Room at Surigao del Sur State University-Cagwait Campus from January to March of the Academic Year 2015-2016. Moreover, this study highlights and presents the design, mechanisms, functions, tests and activities that will test its functionality, operationability, usefulness, effectiveness, durability and other engine related- performances that the engine stand can do for engine/diesel concerns. On the other hand, it actually presents on how the engine stand is useful and helpful in engine /vehicle operations and repair system.

Definition of Terms The different terminologies used in the development of the study are operationally and lexically defined below for clarity and easy understanding among readers: Activity refers to the embedded functions of an engine stand which encompasses specifications and features. In this study, the term is used to identify the different activities and experiments conducted for engine stand. Design refers to the external and internal features of a certain invention. In this study, the term is used to identify the different parts of the engine stand for engine repair and automobile maintenance. Engine stand refers to an automotive and mechanic tool to be used for engine repair and automobile maintenance. In this study, the term is used to describe the functions and mechanisms of engine stand intended for engine repair and maintenance. Experiment refers to a series of tests and specific tasks and activities to define its effectiveness and usefulness. In this study, the term is used to identify and describe engine stand in terms of experiments conducted for the to define its usefulness and effectiveness. Mechanisms refer to the parts and functions found of a certain inventions. In this study, the term is used to identify the parts of the engine stand for engine repair and automobile maintenance.
