GLOBALIZATION AS PROCESS OF
DESEGREGATION
PRESENTED BY :
A
ANKUR GOYAL
WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION???
GLOBALIZATION REFERS TO THE TREND TOWARD COUNTRIES JOINING TOGETHER
ECONOMICALLY, THROUGH EDUCATION, SOCIETY AND POLITICS, AND VIEWING
THEMSELVES NOT ONLY THROUGH THEIR NATIONAL IDENTITY BUT ALSO AS PART OF
THE WORLD AS A WHOLE.
IN OTHER WORDS, GLOBALIZATION IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH THE EXPERIENCE OF
EVERYDAY LIFE, MARKED BY THE DIFFUSION OF COMMODITIES AND IDEAS, IS
BECOMING STANDARDIZED AROUND THE WORLD. GLOBALIZATION MAKES THE
WORLD MORE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL PEOPLE
CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION
Cultural globalization refers to the transmission of ideas, meanings
and values around the world in such a way as to extend and intensify social
relations. This process is marked by the common consumption of cultures that
have been diffused by the Internet, popular culture media, and international
travel. This has added to processes of commodity
exchange and colonization which have a longer history of carrying cultural
meaning around the globe. The circulation of cultures enables individuals to
partake in extended social relations that cross national and regional borders.
The creation and expansion of such social relations is not merely observed on
a material level. Cultural globalization involves the formation of shared norms
and knowledge with which people associate their individual and collective
cultural identities. It brings increasing interconnectedness among different
populations and cultures.
 Cultural globalization integrates scholars from several disciplines, such as
anthropology, sociology, communication, cultural studies, geography, political
science and international relations. The field is notably broad as there are
several concepts which may be perceived as cultural or transnational.
 A visible aspect of cultural globalization is the diffusion of certain cuisines
such as American fast food chains. The two most successful global food and
beverage outlets, McDonald's and Starbucks, are American companies often
cited as examples of globalization, with over 32,000 and 18,000 locations
operating worldwide respectively as of 2008. The Big Mac Index is an informal
measure of purchasing power parity among world currencies.
 Cultural globalization is one of the three main dimensions of globalization
commonly found in academic literature, with the two other being economic
globalization and political globalization. However, unlike economic and
political globalization, cultural globalization has not been the subject of
extensive research.
GLOBALIZATION VS. LOCAL CULTURES
 The globalization of the production and distribution of goods and services is a
welcome development for many people in that it offers them access to products
that they would not otherwise have. However, some are concerned that the
changes brought about by globalization threaten the viability of locally made
products and the people who produce them
 The international trade in cultural products and services, such as movies, music, and
publications are increasing
SOCIO- CULTURE OF GLOBALIZATION
 Globalization has a wide role to play worldwide. It has left back its footprints at
every sphere of life. Not only in India, but the interchange of world views and ideas
has resulted in a major transformation of the lifestyle and living standard of people
globally.
 There is increasing interaction between people of different countries. As a result
food habits, dress habits, lifestyle and views are being internationalized.
 Globalization has influence the culture of one country to another country.
 As a result globalization has brought to India new technologies, new products and
also the economic opportunities.
 MNCs are looking at India in a big way, and are making huge investments to set up
R&D centers in the country. India has made a lead over other growing economies for
IT, business processing, and R&D investments.
 There has been both positive and negative impact of globalization on social and
cultural values in India. such aspects are analyzed under the following heads.
GLOBALISATION AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Positives :
 1.interaction across boundaries leads to the mixing of cultures in particular places
and practice--Pluralisation
 2.cultural flows occur differently in different spheres and may originate in many
places--differentiation
 3.integration and the spread of ideas and images provoke reactions and resistance-
-contestation
 4.global norms or practices are interpreted differently according to local tradition;
the universal must take particular forms--globalization
 5.diversity has itself become a global value, promoted through international
organizations and movements, not to mention nation-states--institutionalization
GLOBALISATION AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Negatives :
 1.multinational corporations promote a certain kind of consumerist culture, in which
standard commodities, promoted by global marketing campaigns exploiting basic
material desires, create similar lifestyles--"Coca-Colonization"
 2.backed by the power of certain states, Western ideals (or, ideals of the powerful)
are falsely established as universal, overriding local traditions--"cultural imperialism"
 3.modern institutions have an inherently rationalizing thrust, making all human
practices more efficient, controllable, and predictable, as exemplified by the spread
of fast food--"McDonaldization"
 4.the United States exerts hegemonic influence in promoting its values and habits
through popular culture and the news media--"Americanization"
THE INFLUENCE OF U.S. CORPORATIONS ON LOCAL MORES
 One of the principal concerns about the new globalization of culture that is
supposedly taking place is that it not only leads to a homogenization of world culture,
but also that it largely represents the "Americanization" of world cultures
 Coffee in Italy is more than a drink; it is part of the way of life and Italian mores. While
in the United States it is common for people to buy takeaway coffee for drinking in
the street or office, in Italy people usually prefer to relax and chat with peers while
drinking coffee
 The principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more
sectors of American society as well as of the rest of the world.” Statistics show that
within the last fifty years, McDonalds has expanded to over 31,000 restaurants
worldwide
POSITIVE IMPACT OF GLOBALIZATION ON
INDIAN CULTURE
 Globalization has allowed for the spread of customs, language and products.
 Globalization has allowed for people to be able to attain goods and services which
are not previously available.
 It has allowed people to become familiar with the culture of other country allowing
for greater understanding.
THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF GLOBALIZATION ON INDIAN
CULTURE:
 Indian Culture
The culture of any country does not only portray the region and language of the region, but
it starts with the mindset and mentality of the residing citizens. Indian culture is quite rich
with respect to its heritage and resources, and more importantly due to the welcoming
approach of its citizens. India is bouquet of flowers varying religion, dialect, edibles,
tradition, custom, music, art and architecture etc., bundled into a single unit of patriotism
and unity. The common factor within all these diversities is the Indian mindset of welcoming,
greeting, celebrating in a united way with immense affection and togetherness. This is the
rich essence of the Indian culture that has attracted many foreigners to stay back in India
and mingle into its eternal fragrance.
When we analyze this rich culture with the globalization point of view, we can find many
punch holes of westernization and mixing of other traits and cultures into our beautifully
woven blanket. Let us closely analyze the impacts of globalization on Indian culture:
 Family Structure
Let us start with the key attraction of Indian joint family culture. The joint families have become
strange surprise to the Indians especially to those residing in the metropolitan cities in the
flat culture with the nuclear families blooming up like mushrooms in the rain. We have lost the
patience to get adjusted into the joint family, imbibing the values of the elders and getting the
young ones brought up under the shadow of their grandparents. Children have started
grandparents like guests or visitors, and such an upbringing is one of the main reasons of
increasing old age homes, as those children consider their own parents as burden in their state
of adulthood.
 Marriage Values
Similarly, marriages have also lost their values. It is very much evident from the increasing
number of divorce cases and the extra-marital affairs reported every now and then. Marriage
used to be considered as bonding of the souls which will be linked even after the death; but
today marriage is like a professional bond or a so-called commitment to share life without
compromising their self-interests. The ego factor into the Indian youth is again a product of
globalization.
 Social Values
We have the incorporated values of treating the guests as God, warm-hearted welcoming,
greeting elders with due respect and a celebrating every small festival with great color of
enjoyment and togetherness. Such a wide gathering with full hue and light can hardly be seen
today. People have highly restricted themselves in social interaction. The interaction in present
generation is highly diplomatic considering the financial status and wealth. We have lost our
social values and cheerful blessing of togetherness. The present generation are more happy
celebrating Valentine’s Day rather than Holi and Diwali.
 Adultery
Both the genders were kept at a distance, with lot many restrictions and limitations to the
approach for ages in our culture. With the emergence of globalization and western culture,
youth have start mixing up well with each other. The friendly approach and the socializing
feature is worth appreciable. But the total breakout of restrictions have adulterated the Indian
mindset, playing up with the physical relationship. This has given birth to new relationships in
India like live-in relationships. Also the increased cases of rape and sexual abuse cases are a
result of the perverted mind which again the imported values very much alien to our mother
 Food, Clothing and Dialect
Indian food, clothing and languages are varied with respect to different states. The food varies
its taste, but every food has its own nutrient value and every region is specified and rich in its
medicinal preparations with the home remedies. Even the clothing varies in different states
which is very much particular in maintaining the dignity of woman. The varies cuisines from all
over the world though have different flavors to add, still the food ingredients that have inflicted
with much popularity are the junk food items which has increased the health disorders in the
country. Again the dressing like the suiting's for the males are an inappropriate match for the
Indian type of climate. The female dresses are again a way of distraction to the perverted
Even the Indians are not very much in favor of promoting their mother tongue or our national
language. Instead the youth today consider it to be a shameful condition to speak in their
national language Hindi. The way the foreign languages are getting prevalent in India like the
French, German and Spanish, right from the school level, is the example of how much we
provide importance to Indian languages in comparison to the foreign ones.
 Employment and the Agricultural Sector
India was predominantly an agricultural based country. With the advanced globalization and
cropping up of MNCs, the farming has lost its prime value in India. Agricultural science has the
least focus amongst the youngsters who consider farming as a shameful profession and look
down upon the same. Employment through MNCs have lucrative deals attracting the bulk of
manpower who are working for the other countries as their customer care representatives. We
are losing our health and our status and slowly getting to the age of economic slavery due to
these MNCs. This is what the globalization has provided Indians through their emergence.
SOCIAL TOOLS TO PROMOTE GLOBALIZATION
 Facebook- The ability to communicate with people all over the world.
 Twitter- The ability to communicate and share information with people all over the world.
 Web Quest- Teachers can create a Web Quest for students to participate in an educational
journey on various topics while using the world wide web.
 Skype (video chatting)- The ability to have a live visual meeting with people all over the
world.
 Phones- The ability to verbally and/or visually communicate with people all over the world.
 WikiSpaces- The ability to share ideas, thoughts and images with people all over the world.
 Microsoft Office- The ability to verbally and visually communicate with people through a
office setting through email, live chat and instant messaging.
 Podcast- Teachers can create a podcast for students to listen to using media. Teachers can
use this for creating assignments and students can listen to the podcast as many times as
they want.
GLOBALIZATION OF POPULAR CULTURE
 There are some examples of American products or American culture that have spread
to other parts of the world.
 Examples of products or cultural characteristics from around the world that have
spread to the United States or become part of our everyday culture.
GLOBAL GRAPH OF MCDONALD MONOPOLIES
RETAIL / FAST FOOD FRANCHISES
 Increased global trade
 Spread of American business
 McDonald’s
 KFC
 Wal-Mart
GLOBALIZATION OF SPORTS
 Cultural Diffusion of baseball
“America’s Favorite Pastime”
Now popular in Japan
 International cooperation
 Olympics

RECIPROCAL EXCHANGE
 Cultural diffusion to the United States
 Popularity of
 Bollywood
 Thai food
 Anime/Cartoons
 Sushi
 Japanese gardens
 Eastern Religion
 Buddhism
THE INTEGRATION OF CULTURES
 Hollywood is a good example of an industry that integrates elements from
more than one culture
 "one reason for Hollywood's success is that from the earliest days it was
open to foreign talent and foreign money.“
 The Columbia Tristar and Twentieth Century Fox companies are owned by
Japan's Sony and Australia's News Corporation, respectively, two foreign
media conglomerates
POP CULTURE
 this new juggernaut of American industry has propelled the American pop
culture around the world at a frenetic pace
 Reality television is a popular medium for the broadcast of American culture.
 The growth of the influence of American television has been mirrored within
the film industry, as well
NEW GLOBAL PROFESSIONS
 Many observers of globalization have come to recognize a new class of people
who are generally well-educated, trained professionals in the business field, who
have developed a kind of global common culture
they
 think in cosmopolitan rather than national terms;
 have high skill and education levels and, as such, benefit the most economically
from globalization; speak foreign languages;
 travel internationally;
 are much less likely to lose their jobs, or to work in industries with falling wages,
due to globalizing economics; and,
 are unlikely to have served—or even have family members who have served—in
the military.
CONCLUSION
 Globalization involves the diffusion of ideas, practices and technologies and the
increase of worldwide social relations which link distant localities, significantly
impacting on the economic, social, cultural and political dimensions of nations and
its peoples.
 In the coming years, efforts to protect traditional cultures are likely to play an
increasingly prominent role in new trade agreements and within international
cooperative ventures. Indeed, a "global" effort to protect local cultures from
"globalization" would be a somewhat ironic development. But increasingly, local
activists are trying to learn how to harness new worldwide forces to cope with the
impact of international trends that have cultural effects

The two most successful global food and beverage outlets, McDonald's and Starbucks, are American companies often cited as examples of globalization, with over 32,000 and 18,000 locations operating worldwide respectively as of 2008. GLOBALISATION AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Positives :  1.interaction across boundaries leads to the mixing of cultures in particular places and practice--Pluralisation  2.cultural flows occur differently in different spheres and may originate in many places--differentiation  3.integration and the spread of ideas and images provoke reactions and resistance- -contestation  4.global norms or practices are interpreted differently according to local tradition; the universal must take particular forms--globalization  5.diversity has itself become a global value, promoted through international organizations and movements, not to mention nation-states--institutionalization
  • 10. GLOBALISATION AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY Negatives :  1.multinational corporations promote a certain kind of consumerist culture, in which standard commodities, promoted by global marketing campaigns exploiting basic material desires, create similar lifestyles--"Coca-Colonization"  2.backed by the power of certain states, Western ideals (or, ideals of the powerful) are falsely established as universal, overriding local traditions--"cultural imperialism"  3.modern institutions have an inherently rationalizing thrust, making all human practices more efficient, controllable, and predictable, as exemplified by the spread of fast food--"McDonaldization"  4.the United States exerts hegemonic influence in promoting its values and habits through popular culture and the news media--"Americanization"
  • 11. THE INFLUENCE OF U.S. CORPORATIONS ON LOCAL MORES  One of the principal concerns about the new globalization of culture that is supposedly taking place is that it not only leads to a homogenization of world culture, but also that it largely represents the "Americanization" of world cultures  Coffee in Italy is more than a drink; it is part of the way of life and Italian mores. While in the United States it is common for people to buy takeaway coffee for drinking in the street or office, in Italy people usually prefer to relax and chat with peers while drinking coffee  The principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as of the rest of the world.” Statistics show that within the last fifty years, McDonalds has expanded to over 31,000 restaurants worldwide

  • 13. THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS OF GLOBALIZATION ON INDIAN CULTURE:  Indian Culture The culture of any country does not only portray the region and language of the region, but it starts with the mindset and mentality of the residing citizens. Indian culture is quite rich with respect to its heritage and resources, and more importantly due to the welcoming approach of its citizens. India is bouquet of flowers varying religion, dialect, edibles, tradition, custom, music, art and architecture etc., bundled into a single unit of patriotism and unity. The common factor within all these diversities is the Indian mindset of welcoming, greeting, celebrating in a united way with immense affection and togetherness. This is the rich essence of the Indian culture that has attracted many foreigners to stay back in India and mingle into its eternal fragrance. When we analyze this rich culture with the globalization point of view, we can find many punch holes of westernization and mixing of other traits and cultures into our beautifully woven blanket. Let us closely analyze the impacts of globalization on Indian culture:
  • 14.  Family Structure Let us start with the key attraction of Indian joint family culture. The joint families have become strange surprise to the Indians especially to those residing in the metropolitan cities in the flat culture with the nuclear families blooming up like mushrooms in the rain. We have lost the patience to get adjusted into the joint family, imbibing the values of the elders and getting the young ones brought up under the shadow of their grandparents. Children have started grandparents like guests or visitors, and such an upbringing is one of the main reasons of increasing old age homes, as those children consider their own parents as burden in their state of adulthood.  Marriage Values Similarly, marriages have also lost their values. It is very much evident from the increasing number of divorce cases and the extra-marital affairs reported every now and then. Marriage used to be considered as bonding of the souls which will be linked even after the death; but today marriage is like a professional bond or a so-called commitment to share life without compromising their self-interests. The ego factor into the Indian youth is again a product of globalization.
  • 15.  Social Values We have the incorporated values of treating the guests as God, warm-hearted welcoming, greeting elders with due respect and a celebrating every small festival with great color of enjoyment and togetherness. Such a wide gathering with full hue and light can hardly be seen today. People have highly restricted themselves in social interaction. The interaction in present generation is highly diplomatic considering the financial status and wealth. We have lost our social values and cheerful blessing of togetherness. The present generation are more happy celebrating Valentine’s Day rather than Holi and Diwali.  Adultery Both the genders were kept at a distance, with lot many restrictions and limitations to the approach for ages in our culture. With the emergence of globalization and western culture, youth have start mixing up well with each other. The friendly approach and the socializing feature is worth appreciable. But the total breakout of restrictions have adulterated the Indian mindset, playing up with the physical relationship. This has given birth to new relationships in India like live-in relationships. Also the increased cases of rape and sexual abuse cases are a result of the perverted mind which again the imported values very much alien to our mother
  • 16.  Food, Clothing and Dialect Indian food, clothing and languages are varied with respect to different states. The food varies its taste, but every food has its own nutrient value and every region is specified and rich in its medicinal preparations with the home remedies. Even the clothing varies in different states which is very much particular in maintaining the dignity of woman. The varies cuisines from all over the world though have different flavors to add, still the food ingredients that have inflicted with much popularity are the junk food items which has increased the health disorders in the country. Again the dressing like the suiting's for the males are an inappropriate match for the Indian type of climate. The female dresses are again a way of distraction to the perverted Even the Indians are not very much in favor of promoting their mother tongue or our national language. Instead the youth today consider it to be a shameful condition to speak in their national language Hindi. The way the foreign languages are getting prevalent in India like the French, German and Spanish, right from the school level, is the example of how much we provide importance to Indian languages in comparison to the foreign ones.
  • 17.  Employment and the Agricultural Sector India was predominantly an agricultural based country. With the advanced globalization and cropping up of MNCs, the farming has lost its prime value in India. Agricultural science has the least focus amongst the youngsters who consider farming as a shameful profession and look down upon the same. Employment through MNCs have lucrative deals attracting the bulk of manpower who are working for the other countries as their customer care representatives. We are losing our health and our status and slowly getting to the age of economic slavery due to these MNCs. This is what the globalization has provided Indians through their emergence.

  • 27. THE INTEGRATION OF CULTURES  Hollywood is a good example of an industry that integrates elements from more than one culture  "one reason for Hollywood's success is that from the earliest days it was open to foreign talent and foreign money.“  The Columbia Tristar and Twentieth Century Fox companies are owned by Japan's Sony and Australia's News Corporation, respectively, two foreign media conglomerates

POP CULTURE  this new juggernaut of American industry has propelled the American pop culture around the world at a frenetic pace  Reality television is a popular medium for the broadcast of American culture.  The growth of the influence of American television has been mirrored within the film industry, as well
  • 29. NEW GLOBAL PROFESSIONS  Many observers of globalization have come to recognize a new class of people who are generally well-educated, trained professionals in the business field, who have developed a kind of global common culture they  think in cosmopolitan rather than national terms;  have high skill and education levels and, as such, benefit the most economically from globalization; speak foreign languages;  travel internationally;  are much less likely to lose their jobs, or to work in industries with falling wages, due to globalizing economics; and,  are unlikely to have served—or even have family members who have served—in the military.
  • 30. CONCLUSION  Globalization involves the diffusion of ideas, practices and technologies and the increase of worldwide social relations which link distant localities, significantly impacting on the economic, social, cultural and political dimensions of nations and its peoples.  In the coming years, efforts to protect traditional cultures are likely to play an increasingly prominent role in new trade agreements and within international cooperative ventures. Indeed, a "global" effort to protect local cultures from "globalization" would be a somewhat ironic development. But increasingly, local activists are trying to learn how to harness new worldwide forces to cope with the impact of international trends that have cultural effects
